Oh, wait, so I got what might have happened: maybe the quota didn't go to in the end, and instead went to . Here's the crazy thing: qualified one gymnast through the World Championships, but it was not through the all-around ranking! The Vietnamese gymnast qualified because he was one of the three best non-qualified gymnast in the vault final. So, if we respect the 1-per-NOC rule only taking as a basis the all-around ranking then would be eligible for one quota. This whole thing is extremely chaotic and more and more absurd. This is a mess!

I agree with you: it was extremely awkward at first, but now this is getting more and more suspicious. Now that this has been published on the IOC website and that news have been spread, it would cause too much commotion and it would anger many, many people, to just plain mention that this interpretation is wrong. FIG will probably just stick to this nonsense and confirm the quotas to Sri Lanka and India. At this point, I don't expect any kind of reasonable outcome anymore. So, probably WAG quotas go to and , and MAG quotas go to and .
-
No, Mexico still has a chance. The thing is: if the event is canceled, then FIG apparently applies a different set of rules that would not allow already qualified nations to add another quota. Now, if the event takes place, nations which have already qualified in any way are able add another quota. In this specific scenario, the wording is very confusing regarding the cancellation of an event and, honestly, it allows for multiple understandings. To be brutally honest, since the cancellation of the Asian Championships would not add extra quotas to China or Japan, FIG just interpreted the rules in a way that adds chances for more people to watch the event. At least a couple hundred/thousand Indians will be interested, if not millions. In the end, it's just business for FIG. Pelo que eu acompanho nos bastidores, nenhuma. The Pan American Championships will happen no matter what, because Brazil's only chance to qualify Rebeca Andrade is making sure that the Pan Ams will take place. And since Rebeca has a real shot at a medal, maybe even more than one, Brazil decided to host the event for the first time in 16 years. Surely, the Brazilian Federation wanted to avoid losing a quota thanks to FIG's BS procedures if the event were to be canceled.

According to discussions on Twitter, and a recent statement from the Pan American Union president, it looks like FIG will assume the very confusing and awkward wording on their document as a sign of "NOCs previously already qualified through the World Championships will not get a quota". This absurd. Not only this is wrong, this is also unfair to other nations. Anyway, let's wait for official confirmation, but it looks like the Sri Lanka and India qualifying might be true.
-
With all due respect to the gymnast, she should not qualify. Of course the rules are written in an absurd way but it should be clear for anyone familiar with the qualification system that she has not qualified. The logic that is being applied for and to qualify does not apply to any other event according to the qualification documents. In my opinion, this is absurd. The fact that so many websites are reporting this, including the IOC, is very worrisome. I will be very disappointed if FIG somehow decides to "bend" the rules in this specific case and deny and of a quota.
-
Exactly! FIG is the one responsible for this mess, yet they don't seem to be bothered to even keep tabs on who is qualified and who isn't. To make things worse, we're in May and still no word about whether the Doha World Cup will take place next month or not. It's a complete mess of a federation and the current president is even worse than the previous one.
-
This is... What... I'm speechless. Look at the mess FIG has created with this convoluted, good for nothing process. If this is the case, then other nations should claim that ROC and Turkey cannot qualify extra male gymnasts at the Euros, because this would have been unfair compared to the options they gave to Asia. FIG has to clear this up ASAP.

I believe she hasn't. Per official FIG rules: "NOC without a qualified team" is not the same as "NOCs not yet qualified". So, even if nations have qualified one gymnast through the all-around competition, they should be able to qualify another gymnast thanks to the cancellation of the Asian Championships. Per these rules, quota places go to and , and since is already out, the quota would go to . and would only qualify if the quotas were supposed to be awarded to NOCs not yet qualified.

Oh, I got it. But, still, with the situation in the US as bad as it was until January, I believe the Olympics would have been canceled months ago if it had been awarded to LA. Of course, it's all hypothetical, but it would be extremely hard to just wait and see if things would improve. Japan only had the "benefit" of being given one extra year because the pandemic seemed to be under control there last year, but in recent months they have shown they're not exactly as competent and well-prepared as we all imagined. It's not like they're a complete nightmare of a place, like Brazil and India are right now, but still not nearly as safe as they could, and should, have been.
-
Wait, what? Trump was the president until January 20, 2021. It's been only three months since that moron left office. Do you really trust the US to host an event while a global pandemic devastates the world? I would not. Of course the situation is better now, but who knows which crazy person might be the US president in 2028... If you asked me two or three years ago which nation would handle a global pandemic better, I would say Japan. I was completely wrong, though.

Oh, that means I'm probably Italian. Now that's unexpected! Not that I plan to leave Brazil and live in Italy, just to make it clear.

I'm all in for protective measures to be taken no matter what, but I also have to say that I kind of agree with the fact that I'm tired of Japan being mostly hypocritical and selfish right now. You see, I've always loved Japan. I've studied the language, I've been dreaming about visiting the country since I was a small kid, but still everything fell apart last year. Japan has been dealing with the pandemics in a convoluted and almost chaotic way. I've seen countless videos of people walking around the streets of Tokyo and it's not uncommon to see residents with their noses poking out of the mask or even wearing the masks on their chins. The subway and some restaurants are overcrowded, and when people eat they obviously don't wear masks. It's like the Japanese are showing the middle finger to the rest of the world when "no one" is watching, and then act like perfect "civilized" citizens when dealing with the way the Olympics will be staged. This kind of hypocrisy makes me really sick. For example, take a look at what happens here from 13:35 on. This video is from September 2020. It's unsettling and almost outrageous for me to watch this, because I've been basically stuck at home for almost one year and still people just go out to an overcrowded place as if nothing is happening. UGH.

Interesting! I never thought about it. This makes aerobic gymnastics the only sport I know of that covers all of these categories. 1) There are gender-specific events: individual male and individual female; 2) There's a mixed pair event; 3) Trios, groups, dance and step events are open to any gender. There was a mixed synchro trampoline event at the early World Championships ins the 1960s, but it has long been discontinued. Any other "open" events in sports you know of?

Weightlifting AWF Asian Championships 2020

As I've written before, this sport deserves this slap on the face. It's bad for the current lifters who are clean, but this should at least put some new perspective into the minds of the presidents of the national federations, and maybe they will think twice when they're faced with the possibility of supporting a tyrannical, corrupt president of an international federation. Even though I'm writing this, I honestly believe very little will change, in the end. Take Brazil, for example: even after being accused of corruption, the president of the national federation has been reelected for another term. The state of weightlifting in Brazil is terrible. Fernando Reis only has decent results because he moved to the US and I think once he gets his green card, he will not represent Brazil in international competitions anymore. I can't blame him. I would do the same, if I were him. -

Even though I wish Reis, Asaad, Bidani and Toycyyev could all have a shot at an Olympic medal, I also wish Minasyan somehow gets to compete. He's the only one who comes close to what Talakhadze lifts. We know there's no way Talakhadze can lose, but at least Minasyan brings a little bit of excitement to this category. Now, if Minasyan doesn't compete, even though I'm Brazilian, I'm rooting for Asaad. He's the one with the best recent results in clean and jerk, if I'm not mistaken, so it could be his medal to lose, anyway. But he didn't look great here, while everyone else looks like they can improve substantially, so who knows? It's too bad the World Championships will only be held in November. I wish all of the lifters from small nations could go head to head against one another before the Olympics. -
Artistic Gymnastics UEG European Championships 2021

Horrible, horrible, horrible final on the horizontal bar. I expected a poor showing after many of the great gymnasts failed to qualify, but this was still beyond atrocious. Definitely not the level of gymnastics I expected from this competition. Still, congratulations to the medalists. -

What an "unfortunate" last name for Andreas Toba. Toba is a slang for a**hole in Brazilian Portuguese. -

She should be happy with this result. She doesn't have the difficulty to challenge for an Olympic medal, and the next code of points will be horrible for her, so don't be surprised if she decides to retire after the Olympics. Gold for Gadirova on floor! Yay! FINALLY Melnikova was not awarded an unrealistic score for her sloppy floor routine. Ferrari with the bronze medal is not something I'm excited about, especially because her execution was not good, but kudos to her for winning a medal at such an "old" age for this sport. No medals for France is kind of sad, but not exactly unexpected. Poor Heduit. I hope she's not seriously injured. I like her style a lot and I hope she goes to Tokyo. -

Not super impressed with the results here. Davoudi is in good shape, but he did merely enough to get the three gold medals. Still, I'd say he's the favorite for the silver medal at the Olympics, but I wouldn't be surprised if he bombs out. Man Asaad looks like he's at his limit, but you never know. He has pulled off huge surprises before. Toycyyev didn't even win a small medal here. I'm baffled. The fact that Yang Zhe would have won a medal in the +109 kg event is mind blowing. It's kind of sad that Minasyan, Lalayan, Aleksanyan, Turmanidze and Ziaziulin will not compete at the Olympics. The level will not be so high without them. Reis, Asaad and Bidani should be the ones who will fight for the bronze medal, and Toycyyev will have to improve considerably to be part of this conversation. -

I hate the current code of points for allowing Radivilov to keep winning medals with such horrible vaults. His pike position is so atrocious it should count as tuck (and that would lower the difficulty of the vault, too). Also, he lands with the chest super low -- that alone is a 0.5 deduction -- but, somehow, he still gets gold. UGH. And the balance beam final was not as bad as I expected. Bachynska went from 10th to bronze medal, and MDJDS won by the smallest possible margin. I can't complain.
