Wait, what? Mexico only 0.150 ahead of Brazil? Everything smells fishy to me. Sky high scores for a Mexican girl in the individual competition and an astonishingly low score for the Mexican group. Hmmm... I wonder what happened behind closed doors at PAGU before this event took place, seriously.

Well, it's over for the Brazilian group. I'm still hopeful Bárbara Domingos can qualify, but our group will not be able to, unfortunately.

Rut Castillo scored 23.050 in the hoop. Her previous international scores with this apparatus this year were 21.700 and 18.400. That's a 1.35 increase in her previous best score. She scored 23.650 in the ball. Her previous scores this year were 18.650 and 14.850. That's a 5 point increase compared to her previous best score and almost TEN points more than her other score this year. This is... wow. I'm speechless!

But after checking pages in Russian, Korean and Thai, I managed to find the results and I added the names of all the medalists to Wikipedia. It would have been much better if AGU did a better job, of course, but I'm glad I found everything. I just couldn't find the scores. What a weird event. I can't find the results for group event finals anywhere.

The most underrated medalist from Brazil is probably Maicon Siqueira (taekwondo). No one expected him to win a medal, and then he did win a medal but unfortunately it was on the very same day that Brazil won gold in football. Then in 2019 he won a medal at the World Championships and media mostly ignored it because 4 other athletes won medals at the Worlds, and he was just "another one". Ouch. The most overrated medalist has to be Diego Hypólito (artistic gymnastics). He's always invited to TV shows and when he opens his mouth, I cringe. He's one of those conservative gay people; he's almost ashamed to be gay, and he speaks about God and family values all the time so he can gain support from conservative people. Ironically, he ran as a councilor and failed to gather enough votes, what is a huge, huge shame for an Olympic medalist as well-known as he is. Still, most people use him as an example for never giving up. He was the favorite for the gold medal on floor in 2008, then a favorite for a medal of any color in 2012, but her failed on both occasions. In 2016 he won a medal and people now love him because of this. I really dislike his personality, though, and he's very unpleasant to me.

The four-member team format could shake things up, but, honestly, I doubt it. in men's artistic. However, I'm not completely sold on the Japanese team. I don't trust any of them. Tanigawa, in special, is very unpredictable and if he screws up like he did a number of times in the past, Japan will not win a medal. However, provided they hit, they should score well enough to guarantee a medal. Ukraine always seems to have trouble in team finals and Great Britain chose Whitlock for their team, and he can only contribute in one apparatus, so I'm not too confident these countries could challenge for the podium. Chinese Taipei, Brazil, USA and Switzerland can score well, but they will need a major upset from the big names to even come close to the scores from the three teams I mentioned. in women's artistic gymnastics. The US is the clear favorite here, thanks to Simone Biles, of course. The other girls are very good, but without Simone, they would be perfectly beatable. Don't let the unrealistic scores at US Nationals fool anyone: once Biles retires, the US team will not be nearly as dominant as they have been. For this year, however, they will still win gold. Russia has a couple of talented girls, but they usually receive higher scores than they deserve, so combine talent and bias and you have a favorite for the second place. Now, the bronze medal will be very interesting. China relies too much on one event: balance beam. If their gymnasts fail, other teams might sneak in. The question is which countries would be able to do it. To be honest, I don't see any country with a particularly good team. Great Britain picked a team with two great gymnasts and two solid, but not particularly talented girls. Italy lost all of its steam. France has MDJDS, but nothing else. Japan will probably be over scored because of home advantage, but they don't have a good team. Germany is a mere shadow of their former selves. Canada is struggling with a limited number of gymnasts to choose from. Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands are completely out of the picture and in my opinion will not even qualify for the final.

This is a very confusing system and I never even tried to understand it fully, I have to say. My question is: how many quotas will be distributed at the Pan American Championships? 1 for a male gymnast, or 2 (1 for a male gymnast and 1 for a female gymnast)?

It's almost nonsense for every single team to focus on the all-arounders. It *only* makes sense for in women's gymnastics, and in men's gymnastics. No other team could seriously challenge for a team medal, realistically, at this point. It's illogical to choose an all-arounder with average/good scores which wouldn't be enough to qualify for the event finals just because the nation wants to finish 4th-8th in the team competition, instead of choosing someone who could win an individual medal. Seriously, how come British Gymnastics seriously believe they can defeat Russia and China with Morgan and Kinsella? With all due respect, they can't even compare. They should have picked Downie because she had a real shot at an individual medal.

This is the most insane decision I've witnessed in my life. British Gymnastics could realistically walk away without medals this time. It would be quite shocking. I hate their choice for the men's team, and the women's team is even worse. I mean, the Gadirovas are great gymnasts, but not exactly medal threats as much as Becky would have been. Morgan and Kinsella have no medal chances at all. I might be wrong, of course, but right now I just can't see it.

Is eligible for a tripartite invitation? After the Pan American Gymnastics Championships, if the Panamanian girl is eligible, she should be a no-brainer for the invitation.

Isn't it supposed to take place from June 18 to 20? I don't know much about junior gymnasts, but according to my friends, the junior girls from Brazil are not great. I don't even expect a team medal for them. The US will win gold comfortably, then Mexico and Argentina should fight for silver and bronze. Argentina might have the edge for the silver medal, though.

A gold medal for ! In the end, it was a fun meet. Many "firsts" for a number of nations, surprising qualification for Costa Rica, solid results for Argentina despite not earning the Olympic qualification and a great meet for Brazil overall, with excellent performances from Rebeca Andrade and nice scores for Caio Souza. Mexicans must be disappointed with the results here, but it's not a secret that Mexico's best chance of qualifying is in group rhythmic gymnastics, so let's keep an eye on the event next weekend.

Oh, too bad about Magistrati. She's fantastic and I hope she keeps competing until 2024. She deserves to go to the Olympics. Now, about the scores, 50.833 is a respectable score, especially considering that the judges were extremely harsh with everybody on the uneven bars and floor. Alvarado had a great day, she did everything she could and no one could catch up. The fact that Magistrati, all the Mexican girls and the other Brazilians -- except for Andrade -- didn't beat this score is absolutely crazy, though. And I don't understand the way scores have been handled here. Scores in the floor finals today were much lower than they should have been! Let's wait for beam and uneven bars finals in the afternoon, but I already expect scores to be lower than what the gymnasts actually deserve...

First-ever medal for . This is absolutely crazy, both Panama and Costa Rica with medals. It's the kind of thing that makes me smile and enjoy this sport even more.
