Artistic Gymnastics at the Summer Olympic Games 2020
thiago_simoes replied to Totallympics's topic in Gymnastics - Artistic
He's the most inconsistent gymnast I've seen in my life. His nerves always get the best of him. Besides, he's reaching a point where his age will begin to be a big factor in his performances, and this is aggravating. It's not like he's gotten any better as the years went by. On the contrary... -

Mikulak. No, seriously. Anyway, maybe he will prove me wrong, but now I'd say I consider him a waste of time. -

He tied Jean-wan, so it comes down to the average scores in all of the stages of the World Cup series. What we might have forgotten to add is that Jeah-wan scored 14.066 today and this pulled his average way down. So, @MHSN, it looks like Saeid Reza Keikha has qualified to Tokyo! -

Okay, this is awkward. So, have we done our calculations wrong? -
What a long, boring, convoluted, needlessly complicated qualification system. I'm glad it's finally over. Or is it? According to FIG's documents, China can't choose which gymnast will qualify through the World Cup quota, but if China somehow is given the right to choose and decide to pick Weng Hao over You Hao, this will make things even more complicated. For starters, will lose a quota. Then, the next qualifier in the parallel bars is Poliashov. I suspect Russia will decline this quota because it's better for them to just take the quota from the European Championships. However, if Russia takes this quota, then they will not allowed to qualify anyone through the European Championships and the quota instead goes to Nicola Bartolini. Now, if Russia declines the Apparatus World Cup quota, next in line would be Mitchell Morgan. In the end, I believe China will have to take You Hao as a specialist no matter what and this will probably hurt the team's prospects because he was expected to compete in the parallel bars and rings. Liu Yang might make the team instead, but in a 4-person team he's not going to be very useful. Of course Yang could take the individual spot China got through the all-around World Cup series, but then Weng Hao would miss a real chance of a medal in the pommel horse. It's going to be a tough decision for China, but unfortunately it's the result of a very risky choice to skip the Doha World Cup entirely.

I can't believe he will miss the Olympics because he scored just 0.071 less than he needed. This is heartbreaking. -
Tokyo Summer Olympic Games 2020 News

Politics is not only about politicians. Sometimes it looks like you're just throwing everything on the wall to see what sticks. The kind of politics you're supposedly against has very few to do with politicians and political parties, and more to do with people's awareness about who they are in this world. You see, even splitting the competition between men and women for the overwhelming majority of sports is a political decision. These kind of decisions affect our everyday lives, such as keeping different restrooms for men and women, for example. Let's not forget that decisions about gender are at the very core of how the Olympics are organized, so I believe it's not up to anyone to just decide who can or cannot show their support about policial causes, and when it's okay to do it. It's just hypocritical to forbid or impose limits about where athletes can show their support. -

So, you have to admit that most athletes depend on politics to even train. There's absolutely no way sports and politics can be separated. -

So, let athletes represent themselves at the Olympics instead of pieces of land with an imaginary boundary decided by politics, then. -
Artistic Gymnastics FIG World Cup 2021 (Doha)

To make things fair, the point is not what I would have given him, but what the judging panel should have given compared to how they judged the other gymnasts. Zanetti performed his best routine in the last 3 years. His execution is comparable to how Petrounias did, even though, of course, there's a difference between their strong points and weak points. Petrounias has great execution, but he missed at least 0.5 for unintentionally moving the cables back and forth a number of times and 0.3 for a not so great handstand. His opening skill alone had adjustments in body position that could have been deducted in 0.3 or more. And there are other smaller deductions that could be applied to his body position, especially his piked roll to cross position, which was not great. Now, the thing is that some judging panels sometimes "overlook" some mistakes, but they do it for every gymnast in a final, not a single one. What happened today is that the panel seems to have overlooked only Petrounias' mistakes. It's like they absolutely had to make sure no one else was going to win even if Petrounias didn't perform the best possible routine he could have done. Anyway, there's no use crying over spilled milk, and my rant is about the judging and not about Petrounias as a gymnast. As I mentioned, the Olympics will be a better event with Petrounias competing, but the way things were handled left a very sour taste in my mouth. -
Artistic Gymnastics FIG World Cup 2021 (Doha)
thiago_simoes replied to Totallympics's topic in Gymnastics - Artistic
The problem is that he didn't deserve this score today. I'm not a fan of China, and I'm not rooting for Liu Yang, but I want results to be fair no matter what, and today it was not a fair result. He was severely overscored to the point that it felt like the judges forced Petrounias' way to the Olympics. There are specific and technical deductions that were applied to all others during today's final -- rather severely, I must say, especially for Zanetti and Çolak -- but were completely overlooked for Petrounias. What the judges did today was the ugliest that they could have done. They knew how much they had to score Petrounias, and they scored him even higher to "eliminate" suspicions, but it only made everything a lot worse than it already was. I know Petrounias suffered with injuries, but this is sport, not charity work. He was rewarded with an Olympic quota, not awarded one. It was almost given to him, instead of him being worthy of getting it, at least by what he showed today. -

Now I hope China picks Liu Yang for the individual spot, and Yang does enough to beat Petrounias at the Olympics. I'm sorry to the Greek fans here, but I cannot force myself to feel any kind of sympathy for Petrounias after today's outrageous robbery. -

Petrounias' score is probably the biggest robbery I've seen in over 20 years following gymnastics. He didn't deserve to qualify, to be honest. Still, the Olympics will be a better event with him. But I'm really, really angry at how bad the judging here was. -
I checked the results from the 2019 World Championships and Abigail Magistrati is in qualifying position way ahead of and . We'll see if FIG will allow Magistrati to qualify instead. I see no reason why they wouldn't, and even on their website there's an FAQ document stating that as long as a gymnast is in qualifying position, the nation could theoretically pick this gymnast if the one who qualified ahead of him/her is injured, or unable to compete.

Sad news. Martina Dominici has tested positive for a banned substance during the Pan American Championships. She will probably miss Tokyo and lose the medals she earned at the Pan Am Champs. I'll have to check whether will still be able to qualify another gymnast to Tokyo via World Championships. If this is not possible, then I believe Argyro Afrati will qualify to Tokyo because Maria Kharenkova will probably refuse the quota since she's recovering from injury.

I once rooted for judoka Rafaela Silva to be our flagbearer, but she was caught for doping and I promised I would never root for anyone again. However, I'll break my promise here. I believe football player Formiga should be our flagbearer. She's 43 and she will take part at her seventh Olympics. She deserves to be honored.

Weightlifting Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

And you deserve to be banned. If you think it's okay to call a woman "he", you're absolutely no different from those nazi and fascist scum who can't respect those who are different from you. Do you think you're advocating for justice for "defending" Stowers? You're just a hateful human being. That's who you are. Do you think you have the right to misgender someone? You're not entitled to anything. Disgusting. -

You probably have no idea how disgusting you sound. It doesn't change the fact that, indeed, you are hateful and this comment is outrageous. -
That explains why Indonesia bragged about qualifying in women's artistic gymnastics. The "logical" explanation is that FIG will give the tripartite quota to , even though the gymnast would qualify on her own according to the rules, so that would get a continental quota instead. That's not what the rules enforce, though. The Indonesian gymnast is pretty good, so I'm not exactly mad about this. But that must hurt for , even though their female gymnast is nowhere near the level of quality of any of the qualified gymnasts, while the Indonesian girl is even better than some of the ones who qualified according to the rules.

and would be amazing! Both are my sentimental favorites here, along with Matvei Petrov from as I mentioned before. And I'm torn about what to expect from . On one hand, Iordache is an extremely talented gymnast who deserves an individual medal. On the other hand, Romania butchered and destroyed their women's program, so they don't have my sympathy and don't deserve an Olympic medal this year, at least not until they fix their program. So, my heart says yes, but my brain says no.
