Manika Batra by a margin. We have lots of hope from 19 year old Archana Girish Kamath as well but she is still in early days of her senior career. Not sure why she was not fielded today. She won the decider against the Swedes after being 2-1 down.

What an amazing performance by Manika Batra. I know, it won't be enough and Samara and Szocs will win the next two singles but still happy with the performance so far. Doubles team also played well before losing 2-3.

The top tier of ICC (India/Australia/England) are not even a bit interested in spreading the game. They reduced the teams and changed the format to ensure that established teams are more likely to advance to later stages. Cricket has no chance of joining Olympics. It is not even part of CWG and level at Asian Games is abysmal. India doesn't take part and Pakistan/Sri Lanka send their C teams.

Fully agree. I was checking Indian contingent at Rio and found that around 85% of our athletes were qualified through global tournaments. This time around also, I expect the bulk of the contingent to come through global standards only. Continental places are useful to get those extra shooters through or to chase the historic Fencing qualification.

Till last week all were sure Saina wasn't going to qualify for Olympics. So, good progress in one week. Also, everybody knows Saina is not a medal hope this time around. In WS, it is quite close in top 8 (Marin instead of Li, who is at present WR 8). It is very unlikely someone outside the top 8 can medal (maybe An Se Young). Top 8 have class, are in good form and go deep in the tournament. Among them, it would depend on the draw and performance on the day but my bet is that medals would be divided among Marin, Sindhu and the Japanese.

Notional Rankings = Present Rankings taking into account the last 52 weeks performance. Race to Tokyo Rankings = Rankings taking into account only the tournaments which will be part of Rankings at end of qualification procedure. On April 30 2020, both rankings will be same.

We will know our opponents after the draw is held on 20th. As 6th seed, we can face any of the teams ranked 9-16th.

No Indian has any realistic hope of being in top 18 of IJF rankings (even after removing double entries). Our only hope is Continental qualification. Each NOC can use the continental qualification only once across all weight classes and both genders. So, basically, Avatar Singh, Sushila Devi, Tulika Mann and other Indian judokas are basically fighting among themselves to be the highest ranked Indian judoka and win the Continental quota.
