  2. Reminds me of the late Canadian snooker player Bill Werbenuik. Edit "Werbeniuk was noted for the copious amounts of alcohol he consumed before and during matches – at least six pints before a match and then one pint for each frame. In total, he drank between 40 and 50 pints of lager per day. Doctors advised Werbeniuk to drink alcohol to counteract a familial benign essential tremor. Later in his career he also took propranolol, a beta blocker, to cope with the effects of his alcohol consumption on his heart. Werbenuik was reported to have successfully claimed the cost of 6 pints of lager before every match as a tax deductible expense. Some of Werbeniuk's most famous feats of drinking include: 76 cans of lager during a game with John Spencer in Australia in the 1970s; 43 pints of lager in a snooker match/drinking contest against Scotsman Eddie Sinclair in which, after Sinclair had passed out following his 42nd pint, Werbeniuk was reported to say "I'm away to the bar now for a proper drink"; 28 pints of lager and 16 whiskies over the course of 11 frames during a match against Nigel Bond, in January 1990 – after which Werbeniuk then consumed an entire bottle of Scotch to "drown his sorrows" after losing the match."
  3. +4 Athletics Four athletes have been added today increasing the number of track and field athletes to 76 and the overall size of the team to 372. Benolympique you've amended the number of fencers but not the overall total! The only outstanding question now is which single women's weightlifting quota Colombia choose to retain of the four they originally secured. If it isn't the 76kg category then GB will gain the reallocated quota and the final size of the team will be 373.
  4. GB tennis player Dan Evans who is going to Tokyo was banned for a year for cocaine use. "Evans was banned from playing professional tennis due to testing positive for cocaine in April 2017. Evans claims that he took a relatively small amount of cocaine out of competition, but that some permitted medication he was taking was then 'contaminated' by the cocaine because he accidentally put the leftover cocaine in the pocket of his washbag, thus testing positive in-competition. Evans was eligible to return to the professional circuit on 24 April 2018, having completed a one-year ban." Sounds like Richardson may get off much more lightly even if she does miss the OG.
  5. I trust this isn't a selfie, hckošice? Watch out for the out of contributing drug testing. ??
  6. Actually football is not the only sport with separate governing bodies in the island of Ireland. For example the Olympics preeminent sport athletics is governed by Athletics Northern Ireland and operates under the umbrella of UK Athletics alongside the other constituent parts of the UK.
  7. How can you equate the possible actions of a foolish individual with state sponsored industrial scale cheating?
  8. The full name of our country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The olympic committee is called the British Olympic Committee and is the NOC for Great Britain and Northern Ireland so they reflect the same areas. People in Northern Ireland can choose whether they wish to compete for GB or Ireland and so far seven Northern Ireland athletes have been selected for Team GB in Rio. Others will no doubt have been selected for the Irish team. Their prospective gymnastic medallist whose name escapes me at the moment is from the north. However, this crossover doesn't just cover Northen Ireland but the whole of the UK and the island of Ireland given the close familial links between many citizens of the two countries. I read a few years ago that half the citizens of Ireland had family members living in the UK for instance. Two members of the current British Olympic team previously represented Ireland, while I know some Irish competitors who have previously represented GB or one of its constituent parts, i.e. England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. It can be a cause of conflict as some sporting bodies represent the whole of the island of Ireland as the Irish Olympic Committee claims to do, while some like football reflect the current border on the island. As an example if hockey players from Northern Ireland want to play for GB at the Olympics they have to play for England, Scotland or Wales rather than Ireland. At the last Olympic games there were four Northern Irish players in the men's GB hockey squad placed in this position. The situation is probably unique simply because of our close history and the intermingling of the peoples of both countries over a long period of time. There really is more that unites us than divides us despite what some may think.
  9. No, you've got an error in the fencing quota. It should be 1 not 12 bringing the total number of athletes down to 368. The BOC has to confirm the 6 judokas, 4 golfers and 3 showjumpers in the next few days. In addition, the total of 368 will increase as there are more track and field athletes to be named and possibly an additional weightlifter once it becomes clear which quotas Colombia are dropping. The final total will be between 370-80 and I'll confirm the final figures as soon as they are available. I do a lot of work on this site and it is up to date. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Britain_at_the_2020_Summer_Olympics
  10. The combination may be relatively inexperienced but March has as much experience as Cantor and King jr. combined. This is, perhaps a case of so much strength in depth being a curse. They could probably put out 3-4 teams capable of medalling in Tokyo.
  11. And yet somehow they have managed to select the world no.1 Oliver Townend and the world no.5 Tom McEwen, while the world no.3 Piggy March is the travelling reserve.
  12. Gracenote may prove to be correct but please remember that the same organisation predicted that GB would win around 50 medals in Rio rather than the 67 they eventually secured. Given the disruptions of the past eighteen months predictions inevitably have a reduced factual basis compared with previous games.
  13. Charley Hull has turned down a place in Tokyo as has the next in line Georgia Hall. Waiting to see if Jodi Ewart Shadoff will take up the spot. If not, the next in the queue is Bronte Law. Meanwhile, Mel Reid has confirmed her participation.
  14. Presumably there will be after the Colombians have indicated which three quotas they wish to retain (and it better not include the women's 76kg category).

  16. 72 track and field athletes have been selected so far but more will be added subject to receiving World Ranking invitations.
  17. Badminton +1 GB have announced a squad of seven players rather than the expected six. Only one player will now double up. https://www.teamgb.com/article/badminton-squad-named-for-tokyo-2020/1bN0mmDg8as1QDlDQHtuQZ
  18. Given the physical nature of the sport how would you fit a 15 man a side rugby competition into the 16 days of the OG? Also it comes up against the issue that golf and tennis face that the OG would not be regarded as the peak of the sport as it is in Sevens.
  19. There's still the unresolved issue of the Irish weightlifting quota to occupy our time. ?
  20. New venues at some stage: Cape Town, Istanbul, Toronto and perhaps Madrid. The latter has issues from my perspective (see below). Former host cities: London, Rome, Sydney. I must admit I prefer cities both at sea level and near the sea - in Toronto's case an inland sea - to avoid issues with altitude (Mexico city) and lessen the impact of heat and/or pollution (Beijing). It also means you can locate all the sports in close proximity which was not possible in a number of venues, e.g. Atlanta, Munich, etc.
  21. Thanks for that! Couldn't face the mixed medley relay?
  22. Was that when Asher-Smith beat Richardson in their only meeting last month with Fraser-Pryce further back?
  23. No, it's twelve plus one reserve. See the teams at the bottom of the link. https://www.teamgb.com/article/rugby-sevens-squads-confirmed-for-tokyo/4iAl5McoZzoeVgy1gTLkVp
  24. I'm not sure that a country can enter more than one mixed doubles pairing. I think it's just sixteen pairs in total. Could have changed but I don't think so.
