  1. I think it's a bit ridiculous to have an athlete cap. If there's 31 athletes that reach the British standard (which is higher than the FINA A standard) then all of them should go to the Olympics.
  2. You're being a bit harsh on him, he should easily reach the final in the 1500m and is currently the favourite to make the final in the 400m. Winning a medal on the other hand is unlikely, he'll probably get at least 1 top 5 result (ignoring any possible doping/drowning).
  3. We may have to wait until Friday (or Monday) before FISA gives the final word.
  4. Netherlands does have a few events used as qualifiers (2015 World Championships, 2015 Amsterdam Swim Cup, 2016 Eindhoven Swim Cup and 2016 European Championships. I think trials are necessary for large nations in order to make things fair. What do you do if three or more athletes made the standard?
  5. The main reason why the top nations have their trials over the next month is to give their athletes time to peak at both the trials and Olympics. For the US it is quite hard for them to do this which is why the top swimmers are rarely at their peak during their trials (or they peak at the trials and aren't as good at the Olympics.
  6. We're still waiting for the final word, but here are the following swimmers from the Netherlands which finished below the Dutch Qualification Time at the Eindhoven Swim Meet. Men's 400m Freestyle - Maarten Brzoskowski Women's 50m Freestyle - Ranomi Kromowidjojo Women's 100m Freestyle - Femke Heemskerk, Ranomi Kromowidjojo Women's 100m Backstroke - Kira Toussaint Netherlands has also previously qualified two open water swimmers (Ferry Weertman, Sharon van Rouwendaal). The main things to look for is the composition of the men's 4x200m freestyle relay and women's 4x100m freestyle relay.
  7. Forgot to post this yesterday. South African Qualifiers - Day 1 Men's 400m Freestyle - Myles Brown Men's 100m Breaststroke - Cameron van der Burgh Men's 400m IM - Sebastien Rousseau, Michael Meyer Van der Burgh's time was done in the semi-final according to SwimSwam that's enough (final hasn't occured yet). Nobody qualified in the women's 400m IM
  8. Australia Qualifiers - Day 5 Men's 100m Freestyle - Cameron McEvoy, Kyle Chalmers Men's 4x100m Freestyle - Cameron McEvoy, Kyle Chalmers, James Roberts, James Magussen Women's 200m Butterfly - Madeline Groves, Brianna Throssell If there's space Matthew Abood and Will Stockwell will be added to the 4x100m team. Nobody qualified in the men's 200m breaststroke
  9. According to Japan Times 34 athletes were selected to the Olympic team, but I can't find a list anywhere.
  10. That makes more sense. Not too keen on Darragh, his fly wasn't fast enough and it could cost Canada a spot in the finals. Maybe Kisil or Condorelli aren't planning to take the relay that seriously.
  11. Looks like we have a woman in every event except the 10km which we can still qualify in and we have 2 in all events except three of them. The addition of Taylor Ruck is a bit interesting. I could see her addition being challenged by Alexia Zevnik (5th place finisher in the 100m free). The men's medley relay will likely qualify so we'll be adding one more swimmer. I don't think we'll hold on to the 4x200m free, though if we do I doubt Cochrane will swim it, it's a useless event.
  12. If something happens in the future. In table tennis the quota is tied to the athlete, not the nation.
  13. United States will likely qualify a team quota in both the men's and women's events. Too bad, I thought Canada could have gotten the men's team.
  14. Australia Qualifiers - Day 4 Men's 200m Butterfly - David Morgan, Grant Irvine Women's 200m Freestyle - Emma McKeon, Bronte Barrat Women's 200m IM - Alicia Coutts, Kotuku Ngwati Women's 4x200m Freestyle - Emma McKeon, Bronte Barrat, Madeline Groves, Leah Neale Also Tamsin Cook and Carla Buchanan will be considered as additional athletes for the 4x200m free.
  15. The Japanese federation could add them if they want to. Overall they need to do something, they technically have 15 relay only swimmers, but they have only 12 quotas to use for relay only swimmers so they will either have to give some of those swimmers individual events or get qualified individual event swimmers from other events to swim those relays. Declining a relay is an option, Japan did it in 2012 for the men's 4x100m freestyle.
  16. Japan won the qualifiers, defeating Hong Kong in the final. They will replace the last place core team from the world series (Likely Portugal or Russia)
  17. She's something special and only 15. Hopefully she improves just a bit more to turn those final appearances into medals.
  18. Canadian Trials - Day 5 Qualifiers Women's 100m Freestyle - Penny Oleksiak, Chantal Van Landeghem Women's 800m Freestyle - Brittany MacLean Women's 200m Breaststroke - Kierra Smith, Martha McCabe Women's 4x100m Freestyle - Penny Oleksiak, Chantal Van Landeghem, Sandrine Mainville, Michelle Williams Penny Oleksiak set a new national record and world junior record in the women's 100m freestyle. No one qualified in the men's 100m butterfly and men's 200m backstroke.
  19. When was the last time a non-European men's team qualified through the final qualification tournament?
  20. The main issue is Germany, like all European teams will likely not play with its best team. It is doubtful that any player selected to Euro 2016 will compete at the Olympics. You know with Euro 2016 and Copa America Century Edition we could see a team from Asia or Africa win gold at the Olympics. Return of Nigeria?
  21. Santo Condorelli false started in the 100m butterfly and thus will not compete in the finals. Canada may not have anyone competing in the mens's 100m fly because of that.
  22. They did in 2012. Or does this have to do with the current state of their sporting federations?
  23. Looking at 2012 there were 40 spots given either as tripartite or reallocation so most nations in that list will qualify. Also just because the nation is eligible for a tripartite spot doesn't mean they applied for one in shooting. In 2012 only 9 nations got a tripartite spot (other tripartite nations qualified through reallocation)
  24. Here's a list of unqualified nations who have reached the MQS (* means they are a tripartite nation) Oman* - 29 Bahrain - 26 Romania - 26 Sri Lanka* - 26 Netherlands - 25 Azerbaijan - 20 Estonia - 20 Lithuania - 19 Uzbekistan - 19 Bangladesh* - 17 Colombia - 17 Pakistan* - 17 Armenia - 15 Lebanon* - 13 Malta* - 13 Morocco - 13 South Africa - 13 Latvia - 11 Hong Kong - 9 Indonesia - 8 Kyrgyzstan - 8 Montenegro* - 8 Tajikistan - 7 Iceland - 6 Ireland - 6 Luxembourg - 6 Philippines - 6 Bolivia* - 5 Albania - 4 Bosnia and Herzegovina* - 4 Moldova - 4 Iraq* - 3 Nepal* - 3 Panama* - 3 Macedonia* - 2 Senegal - 2 Trinidad and Tobago - 2 Uruguay - 2 Andorra* - 1 Angola* - 1 Barbados* - 1 Bhutan* - 1 Costa Rica - 1 Kosovo* - 1 Nicaragua* - 1 Paraguay* - 1 Turkmenistan - 1
