  1. Perhaps, South Africa's NOC told them they wouldn't be selected even if they did compete.
  2. 38-year old Kristel Kobrich qualified to the 1500m freestyle finals. What a long career for her and she's still going strong. Assuming she stays healthy she's looking to go for a 6th Olympics, tied for the most among swimmers
  3. While it's sad for us to go out like this, it was a tough group and honestly, if we can't defeat Spain or Japan then our chances to medal were pretty low.
  4. At this rate we'd have to sneak our way into the Olympics. As in, hope one of Italy or Hungary (or even both) lose their quarterfinal match and then beat Australia while hoping they lose their 5th-8th semifinal match. Is it a dirty way of qualifying? Yes, but hopefully this teaches World Aquatics not to have qualified teams in a final qualifier tournament.
  5. The silver in artistic swimming comes from Canada's performance at the World Cup level. Unfortunately many top nations do not participate at the World Cup so Canada gets overinflated. That's what happens when you take results in a vacuum without taking context into account.
  6. Perhaps, but following the IOC's Qualification System Principles: "In the case of divergence between the French and English texts of these Qualification System Principles and the various qualification systems approved by the IOC, the English text shall prevail." So even if it is translated from French, the English version is the official document.
  7. The whole document is poorly written as are other qualification documents. Over the past Olympics I've come to learn that sometimes things are written a certain way, but the sport federation actually meant something else. It's like whoever makes these has no experience in writing contracts. With that said, if any sport federations are listening I would love to help create qualification documents.
  8. While I think you are correct, that's not the line that would make you correct. This basically says if a nation is already qualified previously it will go to the next duet. This line is what gives credence to your claim "Should the highest ranked eligible duet already be qualified through the team, the next highest ranked duet from the Continental qualifying event will obtain a quota place in this phase only." This essentially says only the top 2 nations from each continent are eligible for the continental quota
  9. FIBA wanted to give women's basketball more opportunities to play or they wanted to charge more hosting fees. It's still a bad system, especially since they were so restricted with how the groups were formed. For example, the United States and Belgium were forced to be in the same group due to a combination of rules. The old system of host + world champ + continental qualifiers + final qualifier is a much better system. The men are also pretty terrible where nations relied on results from nations from other continents to determine who qualified.
  10. I'm happy that we will at least get to compete in the duet. Still hoping for the team to pull through. If we fix our mistakes there's a decent chance we can hold on.
  11. Spain losing makes things a bit more difficult for us too. We pretty much need to beat Hungary.
  12. Mixed 4x100m Medley Qualified - Qualifying Position - Challengers - Quite the number of nations competing, but I don't see anyone outside the top 4 challenging and that's being generous. Neither Israel not Brazil are competing here so their results must stand if they want to qualify.
  13. Women's 4x100m Freestyle Qualified - Qualifying Position - Challengers - While no one jumps out as the favourite to challenge (I think the top 5 all have a chance), there's a good chance to overtake Spain, especially since they aren't competing here. Denmark and Ireland are at risk, but it would take a very strong swim by the challengers to be overtaken. Women's 4x200m Freestyle Qualified - Qualifying Position - Challengers - France and Hong Kong are the big challengers. I suspect South Korea will overtake Spain meaning they and Austria are the most at risk of missing the Olympics Women's 4x100m Medley Qualified - Qualifying Position - Challengers - South Korea and Spain are the biggest challengers. I suspect Hong Kong will improve their time meaning Denmark and Belgium will be at most risk of dropping off.
  14. Relay Olympic Qualification Preview Men's 4x100m Freestyle Qualified - Qualifying Position - Challengers - The big challenger is Great Britain, unless they DSQ again they will likely move into a qualifying position. South Korea and Singapore will also challenge. While the bottom three are in the most dangerous position, they aren't too far off from the rest of the nations. Men's 4x200m Freestyle Qualified - Qualifying Position - Challengers - Thailand's spot is by far the weakest and is essentially guaranteed to lose it. Their spot will be challenged by Singapore, Poland and Mexico. The other 15 are in a good position to keep their Olympic quota. Men's 4x100m Medley Qualified - Qualifying Position - :FRA Challengers - Hungary and Mexico will be looking to try to squeeze into the top 16. Things are quite competitive with the bottom four being at risk at missing the games. Switzerland isn't competing.
  15. Did you honestly think China would lose to New Zealand? From a fan perspective they are qualified before the tournament began. From a mathematics perspective they are not.
  16. How is the 5th-8th semis decided? Will Canada face Australia or is it shuffled?
  17. isn't technically qualified yet. They could lose to France & Puerto Rico and Puerto Rico could lose to New Zealand. Very unlikely to happen, but China is no more qualified now than it was yesterday.
  18. So basically, if reaches the quarterfinals then the 9th, maybe 10th place nation can qualify to the Olympics. If not, then the quotas will be decided after the playoffs. I really want both and to qualify, but it's looking likely that one will eliminate the other.
