  1. There's a couple of work arounds. First as long as she doesn't compete under the Belgium flag her nationality will remain unchanged (like people with dual nationality). The other way could be what the IOC and IJF did with Kosovo's Majlinda Kelmendi where she was allowed to compete for Albania for the Olympics and switch right back to Kosovo after the Olympics.
  2. No, she was a refugee at one point, she was in the middle of getting her citizenship done though.
  3. I would be surprised if Belgium is given the quota. The IOC made a big deal about the refugee team and she's pretty much going to be the most talented athlete on the team. If worse comes to worst they'll send another refugee athlete in her place.
  4. Australia, Canada, France, Japan and New Zealand so far. Of course the teams could grow should they qualify a 10km swimmer or a relay team. Great Britain and South Africa finish their trials this weekend and should announce their team shortly after.
  5. New Zealand confirms its eight swimmers whom qualified from the New Zealand and Canada Trials. All we need for now is China's team
  6. We only have one person competing, in the women's sabre. Hopefully she qualifies though Panama will be tough to beat.
  7. South Africa Swimming Trials - Day 5 Men's 200m Breaststroke - Jarred Crous Also Cameroon van der Burgh reached the standard again in the final of the 200m breaststroke
  8. Great Britain Swimming Trials - Day 3 Men's 400m IM - Max Litchfield As with the French trials most of the team will qualify despite not meeting the British standards.
  9. You are correct. I think the ITTF was right in capping the individual quotas to two per nation for this Olympics though. With the way Asia restructured its qualifiers it wouldn't have mattered whether or not the world rankings had higher priority, but the current format no doubt would have benefited European nations and would have increased the overall strength of the field had it gone as intended (though regardless all the top athletes would have made it, nation caps ignored).
  10. If the format was like in 2012 how different would things be? For the men China (2), Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong (2), Japan (2), South Korea (2), Qatar and Singapore have athletes in the top 22. The five region tournament quotas would go to Chinese Taipei, Singapore, India, Saudi Arabia and Iran and the six overall quotas, assuming top seeds win will go to India, Iran, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Indonesia. Overall nothing has changed. For the women China (2), Chinese Taipei (2), Hong Kong (2), Japan (2), North Korea, South Korea (2) and Singapore (2) have athletes in the top 22. The five region tournament quotas would go to North Korea, Thailand, India, Lebanon and Uzbekistan and the six overall quotas, assuming top seeds win will go to Thailand, India, Iran, Indonesia (2) and Kazakhstan. Overall the strength of the field remains unchanged. Asia knew the current format put its weaker nations at a disadvantage so it changed its own qualification format to essentially match it with 2012.
  11. Quite true, Tonga has had a rich history in the sport, it is also the sport in which they won their only medal.
  12. At best they will tie their record of seven. The only other sport that they can realistically qualify in is rugby sevens. Maybe a tripartite in weightlifting is possible too.
  13. So after doing some number crunching, assuming Hong Kong gives up its quotas at the Asian Champs and all teams use only 1 additional quota to make their team(very likely) and there are no major upsets the current final athletes in the rankings are Serbia's Aleksandar Karakasevic (85th) and Hungary's Petra Lovas (99th). Of course the rankings will likely change between now and the deadline.
  14. You'll never know when the mighty Bermuda and US Virgin Islands will decide to participate
  15. Taking a closer look I can see the two lower ranked athletes from Hong Kong will compete. Is Hong Kong just going to reject them once their top athletes qualify?
  16. This just made the European qualifiers that much more interesting. However, assuming the top seeds win most of the qualifiers would have qualified to the Olympics regardless. It mostly guarantees borderline Asian players a spot and will likely only cost Europe a small handful of spots
  17. With that Australia has confirmed its 34 swimmers. 3 more will be added if (when) Australia qualifies its 4x100m freestyle relay.
  18. Not too bad for Canada. If we can defeat Australia we're in a good position to reach the semi-finals.
  19. It'll likely end up being the top 29 since six team quotas will likely be added to the individual quotas along with the host quota.
  20. Australia Swimming Trials - Day 8 Women's 50m Freestyle - Cate Campbell, Bronte Campbell Men's 1500m Freestyle - Mack Horton, Jack McLoughlin That's it, the final team should be announced soon.
  21. South Africa Swimming Trials - Day 4 Men's 200m Breaststroke - Cameron van der Burgh That was done in the semi-final. Chad le Clos repeated the 200 butterfly standard in the final.
  22. Results for the Oceania Qualifiers are still unknown. According to a news article Fiji's Robert Elder and Tonga's Sifa Taumopepeau won the men's quotas while Australia's Semra Ferguson and Tonga's Lusitania Tatafu won the women's quotas.
