  1. Basically the Chinese trials were more of a suggestion, China won't let a swimmer who had a bad day not go to the Olympics, especially if they are a medal threat.
  2. He didn't participate. From what I heard he can still (and likely will) be added to the team.
  3. Maybe, but to be fair Algeria, Egypt and Tunisia have already qualified in that event. The only major nation missing from the entry list is Senegal (maybe Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana since they are entered in many events too)
  4. Money is always a big problem for Pacific nations with athletes quite often paying their own way to these events.
  5. Australia Swimming Trials - Day 7 Men's 50m Freestyle - Cameron McEvoy Women's 800m Freestyle - Jessica Ashwood Women's 200m Backstroke - Belinda Hocking, Emily Seebohm Nobody qualified in the men's 100m butterfly
  6. Looks like New Zealand won't participate in the OQT part of the championship according to Australia. One of Fiji or Tonga will win a women's quota while both nations will win a men's quota (no other eligible Pacific nations are participating).
  7. In terms of the quality not much will be changed, he's barely in a qualification position. My concern is that there are a lot of golfers on the fence about going and if more people start withdrawing they may be inclined to do so as well.
  8. Only 2 fencers in women's foil are listed in the African qualifiers entry list and one of them is from South Africa.
  9. Fiji's Vijay Singh has withdrawn from the Olympics. Also listed in the article of having previously withdrawn is Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez (though he is currently an alternative). Hopefully this won't gain too much traction or golf's future in the Olympics will be dire.
  10. South Africa Swimming Trials - Day 3 Men's 200m Butterfly - Chad le Clos The time was made in the semi-final. Also Chad le Clos and Christopher Reid reached the standard again in the final of the 200 free and 100 back respectively.
  11. Australian Swimming Trials - Day 6 Men's 200m Backstroke - Mitch Larkin, Joshua Beaver Women's 100m Freestyle - Cate Campbell, Bronte Campbell Women's 200m Breaststroke - Taylor McKeown Nobody qualified in the men's 200m IM
  12. Japan has officially announced its team of 34 athletes. (In Japanese, An English Version). They still have too many relay-only swimmers (15 when they can only have 12). Assuming FINA says something that would likely mean at least three athletes will compete in the individual events.
  13. South Africa Swimming Trials - Day 2 Men's 200m Freestyle - Chad le Clos Men's 100m Backstroke - Christopher Reid Both times were reached during the semi-finals with the finals expected to race tomorrow. Van der Burgh broke the standard again in the 100m breaststroke finals.
  14. I think it's a bit ridiculous to have an athlete cap. If there's 31 athletes that reach the British standard (which is higher than the FINA A standard) then all of them should go to the Olympics.
  15. You're being a bit harsh on him, he should easily reach the final in the 1500m and is currently the favourite to make the final in the 400m. Winning a medal on the other hand is unlikely, he'll probably get at least 1 top 5 result (ignoring any possible doping/drowning).
  16. We may have to wait until Friday (or Monday) before FISA gives the final word.
  17. Netherlands does have a few events used as qualifiers (2015 World Championships, 2015 Amsterdam Swim Cup, 2016 Eindhoven Swim Cup and 2016 European Championships. I think trials are necessary for large nations in order to make things fair. What do you do if three or more athletes made the standard?
  18. The main reason why the top nations have their trials over the next month is to give their athletes time to peak at both the trials and Olympics. For the US it is quite hard for them to do this which is why the top swimmers are rarely at their peak during their trials (or they peak at the trials and aren't as good at the Olympics.
  19. We're still waiting for the final word, but here are the following swimmers from the Netherlands which finished below the Dutch Qualification Time at the Eindhoven Swim Meet. Men's 400m Freestyle - Maarten Brzoskowski Women's 50m Freestyle - Ranomi Kromowidjojo Women's 100m Freestyle - Femke Heemskerk, Ranomi Kromowidjojo Women's 100m Backstroke - Kira Toussaint Netherlands has also previously qualified two open water swimmers (Ferry Weertman, Sharon van Rouwendaal). The main things to look for is the composition of the men's 4x200m freestyle relay and women's 4x100m freestyle relay.
  20. Forgot to post this yesterday. South African Qualifiers - Day 1 Men's 400m Freestyle - Myles Brown Men's 100m Breaststroke - Cameron van der Burgh Men's 400m IM - Sebastien Rousseau, Michael Meyer Van der Burgh's time was done in the semi-final according to SwimSwam that's enough (final hasn't occured yet). Nobody qualified in the women's 400m IM
  21. Australia Qualifiers - Day 5 Men's 100m Freestyle - Cameron McEvoy, Kyle Chalmers Men's 4x100m Freestyle - Cameron McEvoy, Kyle Chalmers, James Roberts, James Magussen Women's 200m Butterfly - Madeline Groves, Brianna Throssell If there's space Matthew Abood and Will Stockwell will be added to the 4x100m team. Nobody qualified in the men's 200m breaststroke
  22. According to Japan Times 34 athletes were selected to the Olympic team, but I can't find a list anywhere.
  23. That makes more sense. Not too keen on Darragh, his fly wasn't fast enough and it could cost Canada a spot in the finals. Maybe Kisil or Condorelli aren't planning to take the relay that seriously.
  24. Looks like we have a woman in every event except the 10km which we can still qualify in and we have 2 in all events except three of them. The addition of Taylor Ruck is a bit interesting. I could see her addition being challenged by Alexia Zevnik (5th place finisher in the 100m free). The men's medley relay will likely qualify so we'll be adding one more swimmer. I don't think we'll hold on to the 4x200m free, though if we do I doubt Cochrane will swim it, it's a useless event.
