  1. India might be the big prize, but the IOC is quite interested in expanding across South Asia. When that region has 3/10 most populous nations and relatively low interest you should want to make an effort to bring in more people/money. Perhaps in a couple decades we'll see Pencak Silat or Dambe become an Olympic sport to bring in the or market respectively.
  2. Is there some kind of delay for the stadium in LA? I guess New York time is slightly better than LA time for India...
  3. Oof, no badminton and table tennis will ruffle some feathers. Sad no rugby sevens will be held...
  4. As mentioned before, 3x3 hockey is not developed enough to be its own event and given the proposed size of teams it will literally be a B-level hockey tournament with likely the same teams as the full size. If they want to follow in basketball's footstep the team size should be 6 players, no padding outside of the goalie, and the game played on a street of a quiet neighbourhood. Maybe throw in a car every now and then to force the players to stop and clear the street .
  5. A ceasefire agreement, no matter what it ends up looking like would likely be enough for the IOC to bring Russia and Belarus back and not wear egg on their face. Until then, we'll likely have a continuing participation of neutral athletes.
  6. Sad, but expected.
  7. The sporting world still mostly recognizes the government in exile
  8. "once it returns to compliance" is a vague statement that means nothing. I don't think anyone, other than people scoring political points was suggesting Russia should be banned forever.
  9. I imagine most of the venues from the 2014 Games are still available so most of the sports should return. Diving, shooting and triathlon were held outside the city and may be at risk of not being included. Additionally, 3x3 basketball, beach volleyball and cricket were held in 2022, but not 2014 so I imagine they might be at risk too.
  10. Honestly, as long as the best continue to compete and humans remain interested in sport, the Olympics will continue to be one of the top events in the world. So unless the IOC president decides to piss off the athletics, swimming, and gymnastics federations to the point they want to create a rival Olympics or they force only amateur athletes to compete life will go on.
  11. The IOC won't allowed it. The IOC already scammed World Skate by convincing them to be the world federation for skateboarding by saying maybe they will add some roller sports along with it only to deny everything else proposed.
  12. I was about to joke that home field advantage strikes again, but I learned that they won away. Congrats
  13. Many world ranking systems have the issue of more appearances = more points or in this case, all continental championships having the same point value regardless of talent within the continent.
  14. Depends on if they were "renting" the information or "buying" it. Again, without seeing the contract we don't know what they can and cannot do.
  15. I mean, they probably did (I would), but depending on the contract with the IOC, they may not be allowed to publish it elsewhere.
  16. The IOC wanted ownership of the data collected by the group which means they didn't have that information in the first place. I hope the information and future ones aren't lost to time. It should be easier with the post-internet era.
  17. Hopefully that's enough to secure some funding over the next four years.
  18. There's a lot less hurdles as like the NBA, the NFL season won't start until after the Olympics so you won't have the issue that baseball and ice hockey have. It's really up to the players, though I imagine team management may try to discourage them like they do in basketball. Also certain positions and skills don't really translate to flag football, kind of like rugby union players playing sevens. Unfortunately for us, the CFL season will be ongoing so Canada likely won't see much support from them unless they take a week off.
  19. Trevor Jones comes immediately to mind
  20. It's a catch-22 for some sports. Won't be added because they aren't popular enough, but would be popular enough if they were on the Olympic program. Of course, even some events are still not popular despite being in the Olympics (synchronized 10m platform diving, BMX freestyle, rowing eights) so clearly other forces are at play.
  21. The sport program blew up in 1920, it went from 102 events in 1912 to 156 events in 1920. By 1928, the program was down to 109 events.
  22. What's wrong with tug-of-war in theory? It's a team based strength competition, something you don't see on the program. Of course, way too few nations actually participate (only 25 total nations are competing at the 2024 World Championships) so it won't be added any time soon
  23. has been investing more into other sports or at the very least their athletes are getting better. While this was still technically their best Olympics ever, I thought they were actually unfortunate and could have won more medals this time around.
  24. Qualification procedures won't be finalized for another two years, but here are my thoughts of our qualification chances in the five added sports. American Football - Even assuming the United States gets a host quota, it might be difficult for Canada to qualify. Currently, Mexico is the next best Pan American nation and while we have potential using CFL and NFL players, I'm not sure if many would commit. A world qualifier would help our chances. Baseball/Softball - We should easily qualify in softball given the United States will get the host quota. Baseball on the other hand will be quite difficult, assuming the team sports are only going to have 6-8 entrants. Cricket - This is our weakest sport among the five here. I was relatively impressed with our men's T20 performance earlier this year. A split West Indies team makes things a bit interesting for the Pan American quota. On paper the major teams from the West Indies should beat us, but it does create a little bit of hope. Lacrosse - We should easily qualify a men's and women's team. At worst we are top 2 in the world. Squash - We currently have 1 man and 2 women in the top 50 rankings. I believe this will be a 16-person tournament and assuming 1 athlete per NOC there's a chance, more so on the women's side, but who knows where they will be ranked in four years or if someone new moves up the rankings.
