How many medals do you expect from your Nation at the 2020 Olympics? (2021 "A" version)

Funny how nobody was mentioning Valegro's age and mileage before Rio... This all seems like the usual dirty tactics (as presented by British Dressage) of trying to influence the judges through media.

Well, Valegro was 14 in Rio and not as good as he was in London. The top German horses are 14,16,17 while Freestyle is 12 and still improving...

Despite that, I think Germany will probably still win both golds this year

I like how, when adding everyone's predictions, you'd probably always end up with a hundred more total medals than are actually available in the Olympics :p

Also fun when someone calls athlete A an outsider yet gives like 40% chance :d

.

I would expect 5-7 medals for Croatia.

Sandra Perkovic and the Sinkovic brothers should win a medal. Very good chances I see for Tin Srbic in horizontal bar and Matea Jelic in Taekwondo.

And then there are some other chances like Kvesic in Karate, Gorsa, Glasnovic and Pejcic in Shooting, Mektic/Pavic in Tennis Doubles, Fantela brothers in 49er Sailing, Kanaet in Taekwondo, maybe Sara Kolak in Javelin throw and our Water polo men's team.

those are not locked gold medals at all...

Yes, Maybe I am being a little too fast on those, but after the week-end she had, she is certainly in the top 2 internationally right now.  She's a second faster than anyone else in the 200 and 7 seconds faster than anyone else in the 400.  We'll see how Titmus comes back from her injury.  I'll take the 200 FS off my list for now.

Bella Rose has only three seasons behind her though (2014, 2018, 2019). There was an injury that took a long time to heal, and she was consistently improving upon her comeback, between 2018 and 2019.

By the time Rio arrived, Valegro had five consecutive championships seasons behind him (and was showing signs of mileage at Deodoro).

Really? It seems to me that general tone is pessimistic (barring India and Brazil :p).

If all these nations stand to lose medals, one wonders who will gain them.

Something that might skew how it looks is that only a part of the medals have users representing the countries here :p

A decent sized number of medals will be won by countries who aren't represented here and so won't appear in the predictions..

LOL, you're right. I predicted 15 medals, which would be 4 less than in 2016, but I believe that no one who follows the sport in the country would be happy with anything other than 20 medals or more this time. If our judokas and volleyball teams had been in better shape, I would have predicted over 20 medals for sure. Also, on paper, Brazil can challenge for 6 medals in artistic gymnastics, and if we manage to get 4 or more, I would go crazy. Our chances are: men's rings, men's horizontal bar, women's all-around, women's vault, women's balance beam and women's floor. I believe women's vault is our "safest" medal with Rebeca Andrade. Of course, she has to qualify first, but she's in excellent shape in training, maybe the best she has ever been.

If she has the opportunity to qualify...

Yeah, I wouldn't call the predictions here optimistic, pretty much no one is overestimating their country in this thread. Like, I am usually a more pessimistic person, and somehow my prediction here turned out to be more hopeful than most of the others. :d (and even I said that there's a very real possibility of us having a terrible Games, as many of our medal and gold chances are in unpredictable sports like fencing, wrestling, sailing, shooting, etc.)

    • One of my favorite songs from the early 2000s that I listened to on a cassette on my walkman
    • For me 20 medals will be good. And if more there are? Super. However, I prefer not to get my hopes up too much, so as not to be disappointed later.
    • If you're still taking suggestions, I tought the following:   Team Madison format.   17 teams of 2 "riders", randomly drawn. Teams can be named for famous "endurance" track cyclists. 4 intermediate "sprints", one after a voting block, in which the top 8 teams will score according to this formula: (10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 & 1). The order in which team score for a sprint are determined by the total number of "medals" won by both members of the team during the block. Ranking will be sorted according to the number of gold medals, then silver, then bronze. If there's two or more teams with same number of points, the medals of best individual performer of each team will be considered to break the tie. If the tie remains, then team's total points during the block will be used to break it. If the team fails to receive a single medal during each block, it will be considered to "lose lap" and 20 points will be substracted from their score. If the team fails to score at least 1 point during each block, it will be an automatic DNF for the team. If both members of the team get a medal from a single jury, it will be considered to "gain lap" and 20 points will be added to their score. A team can only win an additional lap per voting block. After the 4 intermediate, a "final" sprint will be recorded, in which points will be doubled (20, 16, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4 & 2). Ranking for the final sprint will take into account the total medals won during the event.   What do you think?
    • I don't medal pick, per se... I assign probabilities/expected-values and total them up. So I don't have a gold medal estimate... but if you want one, divide those numbers by three and you'll be pretty close!   I imagine Norway, Italy and Netherlands and maybe Canada will probably skew a bit higher on golds, and US, Germany, and Sweden will skew a little lower... so maybe: Norway - 14 US - 11 Germany - 11 Italy - 11 Canada - 10 Austria - 8 Netherlands - 8 Japan - 7 Sweden - 6 France.- 6   I was surprised seeing Italy come in that high, I was figuring 22-23, but I guess they've been do well on the World Cups.
    • If you were to predict top- 10 for the number of gold medals, what would it look like?     For me, as an Italian, any result for Italy: +20 medals would be OK (if that will include 6-7 gold medals). The trauma of Turin 2006 is too great
    • Doesn't really help that two of the strongest countries in that particular sport are banned from the team event for well known reasons.
