intoronto 4,244 Posted April 11, 2016 #126 Share Posted April 11, 2016 (edited) 27 swimmers will represent Canada (including open water). Most likely that number will rise to 28 with Jason Block being added for the men's 4x100 medley relay (we won't know till June, but Canada is safely in qualification position by more than 3 seconds). Condorelli (butterfly), Acevedo (backstroke) and Kisil (freestyle) will round out the team and are already named to the Olympic team. The men's 4x200m relay is also in qualification position and might decide to use two already qualified athletes (Thormeyer and Cochrane) + 2 additional names to bring the total to 30 swimmers (1 less than in London). The surprise was the addition of Taylor Ruck (15 year old) who won gold medals at the World Juniors last year but struggled here with injuries. She will be an alternate for the relays in Rio (giving Oleksiak much needed rest from the prelims). Hopefully Ruck can be back to her form from last year! For the full roster click here. From following Canadian swimming from Athens (no medals, which was crushing) I can honestly say this is one of the strongest teams I have seen). Medal candidates: Weinberger - open water swim, if he cuts down on his mistakes he should medal Cochrane - going for two medals in the 400 and 1500 (will be tough, but who knows its possible he can pull it off) Condorelli - 100 freestyle Oleksiak - is a threat in almost all her events, hopefully she wins 1! McLean - Produced world class results in the 400 and 800, and hopefully she can pull of a double in Rio. The women's 4x100 medley relay team is just outside a medal, maybe they can rise up to the occasion Caldwell in the women's 200m backstroke should threaten for a medal. Pickerm/Overholt - 1 medal between the two in the individual medleys So the potential is there for 10 medals!! You didn't specifically mention the Women's 4x100m Freestyle team which is really strong, plus the girls all train together so they may have an advantage. EDIT: Looking at the schedule with the Women's 4x100 Freestyle, Women's 400IM and Men's 400 Freestyle all being on the first day, there is a decent chance that Canada could take a medal setting the first week of swimming off on a strong note. JoshMartini007 2,214 Posted April 11, 2016 #128 Share Posted April 11, 2016 Looks like we have a woman in every event except the 10km which we can still qualify in and we have 2 in all events except three of them. The addition of Taylor Ruck is a bit interesting. I could see her addition being challenged by Alexia Zevnik (5th place finisher in the 100m free). The men's medley relay will likely qualify so we'll be adding one more swimmer. I don't think we'll hold on to the 4x200m free, though if we do I doubt Cochrane will swim it, it's a useless event. Just got word that Darragh and Block have been nominated pending the medley team qualifying. Milosevic and Bagshaw will be added if the 4x200 relay qualify (and will be joined by Kisil and Thormeyer). Ruck was added from her fifth place finish in the 4x200 relay, though she was announced as competing in the 4x100, weird.

Not too keen on Darragh, his fly wasn't fast enough and it could cost Canada a spot in the finals. Maybe Kisil or Condorelli aren't planning to take the relay that seriously.
