I should also have included Cindy Ngamba in the squad updates given she should have had her GB citizenship way before now - she came through her first round against  Naomi Graham 5-0

It should have been clear after the last Olympics that this was likely for the British team, especially the men. The top tier talents all went pro

Day 5 schedule was a bit late being put online but with 28 fights in each session, it's going to be the busiest day of the tournament yet:

If Ngamba wins a quota, and then gets GB citizenship, what happens?

Don't think anyone really knows - previously the refugee boxers received invite rather than having to win a quota. According to the qualification document, the quota is awarded to the athlete rather than the NOC so if she wins a spot and the Home Office pull their finger out and resolve her citizenship, then the quota would form part of the  team. If both Ngamba and Reid were to win quotas I would assume GB Boxing would have to reject one.

With Patris Murghalzai bowing out of the competition this evening I thought it was worth doing a trawl to see if there was any update on Reese Lynch.

 

For those not aware, it turns out that Lynch was competing at the European Games with a possible rib stress fracture in his back. About a month after the games, the rib broke. This was followed by a further rib break about a month or so later - apparently occurring whilst helping his mum bring her shopping in from the car. 

 

All of this means that Lynch hasn't fought competitively since the European Games. 

 

As of the end of January, Lynch has been cleared to shadow box and is hoping to be in the frame for selection for the final Olympic qualifying tournament in Bangkok at the end of May.

I wonder if GB are playing the game a smidge here. IF ONLY Ngamba comes through, she magically gets the passport just in time. IF BOTH get through, Ngamba 'remains' a refugee until after the Games, both get to go, with frequent BBC accidental mention of her GB links...
