We have now reached the midway point of the Pan American Games. Let's take a look on how nations are performing relative to 2019. Of the 197 events completed, 175 were also held in 2019 (with some minor weight adjustments in boxing). Here's a table ranking how much better (or worse) a nation is performing.

:CAN 17 31 21 69 30 26 29 85 16

Canada (+16 total) and Mexico (+15) have seen a very large increase, including +13 gold medals. Brazil is still on pace to finish second on the table, but the race may be close should Brazil slightly falter. Despite being suspended, Guatemala is doing well as is Uruguay (+4).

On the negative side, Cuba has dropped the most medals relative to 2019 by losing 25 medals. Argentina also suffered quite a bit going -18. The Dominican Republic rounds out the bottom three with -7.

Maggie MacNeil has earned 1/6 of Canada's golds, while Maggie and Felix Dolci have gotten about 12% of Canada's medals thus far.

Canada has a great chance to surpass its non-home Games gold medal record (47 in 1995), but I don't know if it'll beat its non-home total medal record (177 also in 1995).

The problem, as always, is that the sports Canada is good at the USA is also good at. And the USA is very, very good at those sports.

For people who wonder where :ARG

lost those 10 golds...

4 in Rowing: majority of rowers retired due to age.

4 in Swimming: Bardach (1) and Pignatiello (3) retired, the latter at just 21 years of age.

1 in TKD: Guzman won silver this time.

1 in Boxing: Leonela Sanchez retired.

Another medal, another bronze added yesterday, this time in Judo, quite surprisingly not from the more expected Lenin Preciado, who lost his bronze medal match but from the young Pablo Ayala.

2 - 5 - 11

Medals of the Day

Juan Pablo Ayala,

Judo M -60kg Bronze

Wait, is Argentina now part of Europe? 😮

:PER Kimberly Garcia won the women's 20km Race Walk with a WR time of 1:12:26. In fact, 12 athletes did better than the previous world record...

Except that the was a mistake in the course and they didn't actually walk for 20km  They'll correct for the men's race, which was postponed by 1 hour.

I suspect we won’t see a group sprint in the women’s road race. I think the climb will become key on the last lap or two. Peloton doesn’t want a breakaway going up the road, but not much you can do if the group splinters on the climb.
