To point out a mistake in the document.

They say Artistic Swimming is back to being a women only sport. That is not true, men are still allowed to compete

If it showed under open, the men's side would have shown has having more quotas and defeat their headline from yesterday

If it's anything like 2024 it's mixed rather than open - there are six women's quotas and two open quotas for each team.

I hope it was a typo and they mean mixed doubles.

Unless they bring back ranking points (they should regardless) I imagine the team event will be sparsely attended. I just hope players declining to participate won't spread to the singles/doubles events.

I’m not sure they will bring back ranking points. The reason they were axed is because of the nationality limits and those remain.

Beach Volleyball won’t be at the Santa Monica Pier. At this point, the options are either Huntington Beach or Long Beach.

or the tennis* stadium inside the UCLA campus (which was the original idea, then discarded, but now taken into consideration once again)

*tennis will be in Carson in any case

That's why they only offered 750 points to the winner as an initial compromise. If you were the 4th/5th best player in your nation and were not selected due to NOC limits and you cared about points you would be better off competing at a different event at the same time. With a depleted field you'd likely earn more points there anyway.

It was more because ATP/WTA tournaments held at the same time were losing out on players and thus attendance for the tournaments were low.

Also this from a journalist friend who asked the IOC about whether the mixed tennis event would be mixed doubles or a mixed team event.

Simple answer - they don't know yet. The ITF are still to decide

The problem is XD is a fun event, but its essentially a social event, and lags far behind the others both at Grand Slams and Olympics - no quotas of its own, very limited prize money - as the indivisual Olympic tennis has got more and more important, the top players have limited thhier doubles participation to the main M and W D.

a team format, however, gets some fo that BJK/Davis cup magic, and because it'll b enovel, they can REALLY mess around with it - for example, a three set match could consists of MS first set, WS second and, if needed mixed doubles decider - light work load and quick competition. could play three matches a day if needed

Would not be incredibly shocked if BOTH golf and tennis adopted a quickfire 'Olympic' format - Singles, singles, doubles - (In golf it would be 9 hole matchplay with sets replaced with 9 hole matches, and the order men's indi, women's indi, mixed foursome

On Compound, nice to see it but odd too for GB - Ella Gibson is one of the outstanding shooters of her time, but GBR don't seem to have a male compound shooter worth a candle

On voluntary team sports (Flag football, cricket, lacrosse) I smell a rankings heavy approach with continental rep limited to 3 - though they may be real sneaky with cricket and go host (USA), Euro 1(GBR), Oceania 1(Aus), Asia (1)(India) Africa 1(South Africa) and Final Qualifier 1, heavily loaded with Asia and West Indies individual teams, perhaps Ireland and New Zealand for the appearance of balance.

The Iroquois question still unresolved. GBR would be a rankings pick in everything bar men's flag football

Wonder about the Team gymnastics - Super quick fire high peril format maybe of just one gymnast per apparatus, with the floor and vault reserved to the women so each sex provide only 4 scores - would make it feel different to the existing team events, and make USA a less guaranteed gold. Qualifiation by highest score in overall Q in each event - even if that score comes from same athlete in multiple events

I don't like these convoluted mixed events. I mean, it is fine if there is a clear, not too weird format, but more and more silly mixed events are coming up just to have a 'mixed' event.

I don't mind the format in Archery, Athletics (there the main problem is the schedule), Biathlon and Shooting (also not in freestyle Swimming but that one is not Olympic). Naturally also fine with MD in the Tennis sports. But all others are pretty convoluted already and there is just more to come.

The Bad part:

2. Athletics : This change doesn’t make much sense. Perhaps an additional 🥇 for :USA . Why would you take away a race walking event only to replace it with another track event.

I'm late to the thread and maybe someone else said this, but the minute I saw this, my reaction was Great, a second relay for :USA men to muff the baton exchange.

Might be wront because I'm transcribing while watching live (while also being on a work meeting)

  • 50m events in all strokes
  • 12 women's teams in water polo
  • Compound (!) mixed team event archery
  • 4x100m mixed relay in athletics
  • Mixed race walk relay removed :(
  • 12 teams in 3x3 basketball
  • 7 men's and women's events in boxing
  • Football will have 16 women's teams and 12 men's teams
  • Mixed team event in golf
  • Mixed artistic gymnastics team event (!)
  • Coastal rowing is three events (men's, women's, mixed double sculls), removing lightweight rowing
  • NO MORE COMBINED IN CLIMBING! Speed, boulder and lead are all different events
  • Mixed team event in table tennis (in addition to mixed doubles? O.o)
  • 10500 athlete quota only applies to core sports for LA
  • More women's quotas than men's quotas overall

I'm very happy with the sports program for LA28, maybe I will be witness the return of baseball and the arrival of all events in the 50m swimming
