  1. After Final Day Rio: 306/306 events, 86 NOCs with medals After Final Day Tokyo: 339/339 events, 93 NOCs with medals On an exciting final day the US (46-37-38 in Rio) managed to snatch away first place from the Chinese (26-18-26 in Rio). Even on a loss of projected medals for the US team, they have been capable of holding off anyone else. The Chinese however with a better performance compared to Rio. Very fine games for the hosts here (12-8-21 in Rio). The Japanese have turned many bronze medals into golden ones this time. Their judo team has made them proud and the inclusion of new sports have helped them. Especially in skateboarding. In total medals however, they fall short on (19-17-20 in Rio under ) and the British (27-23-17 in Rio), holding off the Russians for 4th place. As stated before, remarkable games for the Australians with a gain of 9 golds and 17 more medals total compared to Rio (8-11-10). South Korea leave the Top 10 while the Dutch did not disappoint after the games have begun troublesome for them. 10 medals were required this time to reach the Top 10 in the medal table. As @Vektor already summarised, the biggest gainers and losers can be seen in his post. 4th place counter* (30) (22) (17) (16) (15) (14) (13) (12) (11) (10) (8) (7) (6) (5) (4) (3) (2) and the Refugee Olympic Team (1) *5th places in events that award two bronze medals; also includes QF losers in boxing and athletes in karate kumite one shy from the SF after the pool stage
  2. In that case it'll be difficult for Paris 2024 to to be ranked higher than Tokyo 2020 for me. There's less events already and without weightlifting, that's one of the most exciting sports gone. Not to mention the quota cuts.
  3. You must be having a field day with Israel's best games as well.
  4. Is the programme for Paris final or is there still a possibility for a sport/event to get included?
  5. In the end, it was Day 3 that has cost China the top spot with losses in diving, table tennis and weightlifting (which also prevented sweeps in all of those sports).
  6. I agree. It's just the last day that can't have many events because of the closing ceremony. I think they should have tennis on the last days. This time it was all racket sports at the same time and I give table tennis my priority. Tennis, albeit many top players miss the tournament, should be a highlight at the end of the games. I also know how you feel, this is my first Summer Games without my grandma and in 2016, my mum passed away a month before Rio.
  7. Sounds crazy but I give them a shot at table tennis, at least for minor medals. They showed spirit hereand they can build around Simon Gauzy and Prithika Pavade on the next cycle. Gauzy beat Xu Xin on major occasions before like at the 2019 worlds (although Xu Xin can be erratic at times). Lebesson might also be around. I can picture a mixed medal for them.
  8. Interesting to have track cycling on the last day this time, let alone three events.
  9. After Day 15 Rio: 294/306 events, 87 NOCs with medals After Day 15 Tokyo: 326/339 events, 93 NOCs with medals Who would have thought that the race for 1st/2nd between China and the US is open until the very last day? 4th place between GB and Russia as well. Everything comes pretty much down to boxing, volleyball and track cycling. Japan with another huge day for them safely 3rd and Australia will finish 6th. The record number of nations winning at least one medal has grown to 93 today. South Korea will find themselves out of the Top 10 this cycle. India are having their most succesful Summer Olympics winning 7 medals, including a gold, surpassing the amount of total medals by one (6 medals 2012 in London). Norway might finish Top 20 for the first time since 2004 (5-0-1; 17th in Athens). Brazil have become the second country (after GB) surpassing their medal winnings after hosting the previous Summer Games. On their best games, they finish with medals in the twenties range. Very unsuccessful games for South Africa, going down from 10 medals in Rio to just 3 in Tokyo. One of which came from the new sport of surfing. Also, Ethiopia might not only finish behind Kenya but also behind Uganda this time. 4th place counter* (30) (22) (17) (16) (15) (14) (13) (12) (10) (8) (7) (6) (5) (4) (3) (2) and the Refugee Olympic Team (1) *5th places in events that award two bronze medals; also includes QF losers in boxing and athletes in karate kumite one shy from the SF after the pool stage
  10. The question is if there's someone knowledgable enough when it comes to this sport who can tell us if out-of-podium routines deserved to win medals. After all, it could simply be that Russia is the undisputed number one, with China easily the second-best and Ukraine the third-best.
  11. Well, it is Romashina's 7th Olympic gold. That's as many as Dressel and Ledecky. If she competes in Paris again, she could tie Latynina, Nurmi, Spitz and Carl Lewis.
  12. The most-predicted outcomes have come true but not everything is set in stone as we've seen. (5) National Team - Basketball - Women's Team (2) National Team - Rhythmic Gymnastics - Women's Group (8) National Team - Table Tennis - Men's Team (7) National Team - Artistic Swmming - Women's Team (5) National Team - Artistic Swmming - Women's Duet (5) National Team - Table Tennis - Women's Team (3) Katie Ledecky - Swimming - Women's 1500m Freestyle (3) National Team - Water Polo - Women's Team (3) Lasha Talakhadze - Weightlifting - Men's +109kg (2) Yulimar Rojas - Athletics - Women's Triple Jump (2) Adam Peaty - Swimming - Men's 100m Breaststroke (2) Wang Zhouyu - Weightlifting - Women's -87kg (2) Li Wenwen - Weightlifting - Women's +87kg (1) National Team - Archery - Women's Team (1) Armand Duplantis - Athletics - Men's Pole Vault (1) National Team - Basketball - Men's Team (1) Jessica Fox - Canoeing - Women's Slalom C-1 (1) Shi Tingmao/Wang Han - Diving - Women's Synchronized 3m Springboard (1) Shohei Ono - Judo - Men's -73kg (1) Ryo Kiyuna - Karate - Men's Kata (1) Janja Garnbret - Sports Climbing - Women's Combined (1) National Team - Swimming - Women's 4x100m Freestyle Relay (1) Kuo Hsing-chun - Weightlifting - Women's -59kg (1) Neisi Dajomes - Weightlifting - Women's -76kg (1) Yui Susaki - Wrestling - Women's Freestyle -50kg (2) National Team - Artistic Gymnastics - Women's Team (2) Simone Biles - Artistic Gymnastics - Women's All-Around (1) Simone Biles - Artistic Gymnastics - Women's Floor (1) Simone Biles - Artistic Gymnastics - Women's Vault (1) Johannes Vetter - Athletics - Men's Javelin Throw (1) National Team - Athletics - Mixed 4x400m Relay (1) Chloe Dygert - Cycling - Women's Road Time Trial (1) Cao Yuan/Chen Aisen - Diving - Men's Synchronized 10m Platform (1) Dina/Arina Averina - Rhythmic Gymnastics - Women's All-Around (1) Jonathan Brownlee - Triathlon - Men's Race (1) Liao Qiuyun - Weightlifting - Women's -55kg (1) Hassan Yazdani - Wrestling - Men's Freestyle -86kg
  13. Brazil shows non-Europe can still win an intercontinental men's tournament.
  14. That's it, Japan wins it 2-0. Baseball matches are long, especially at the Olympics, but it's definitely a team sport I hope to return for LA 2028.
  15. Yui Susaki making it look easy, no chance for Sun at all.
  16. Brazil missing a penalty but scoring 1-0 just before half-time.
  17. This is one of the sports where I don't get how the US dominates the women's field but not the men's. Probably women's water polo is still too unpopular?
  18. Satish and Pooja Rani. I added QF losers in boxing here too because it's essentially 5th place in a combat sport one shy from a medal.
  19. After Day 14 Rio: 264/306 events, 83 NOCs with medals After Day 14 Tokyo: 292/339 events, 89 NOCs with medals Finally, Lithuania is on board as well. Let's make it a round number and find one more nation for the most diverse medal table in the history of the Olympics! China are going into the busiest day tomorrow with a 5 gold lead over the US. The Americans have a lot of changes left catching the Chinese. Japan with a solid third place. Russia with many solid chances left finishing 4th, with GB possibly making it interesting until the end. 7th to 15th place in the final ranking is very busy too with chances for all of them on gaining or losing places. Italy, despite a bumpy start, have no won more medals than on their home games in 1960 (36 total in Rome). Canada tying Atlanta and Rio with chances left to win the most medals at a summer games (excluding the boycotted 1984 games in Los Angeles). Poland improving on recent games too with most medals since 2000 (14 total in Sydney). If the Ukraine can't find another Olympic champion the next two days, they have been on a gradual decline in golds ever since 2004 in Athens. 4th place counter* (30) (18) (16) (15) (14) (13) (12) (11) (10) (9) (8) (7) (6) (5) (4) (3) (2) and the Refugee Olympic Team (1) *5th places in events that award two bronze medals; also includes QF losers in boxing and athletes in karate kumite one shy from the SF after the pool stage
  20. Penultimate happiness meter poll: After Day 2: 5,03 After Day 4: 5,63 After Day 6: 6,40 After Day 8: 6,71 After Day 10: 5,91 After Day 12: 6,87
  21. Just goes to show that everyone should wait until it's over. I know I said GB might be down to 35 medals this time but I was also wrong. The Summer Olympics offer tons of possible outcomes.
  22. Great recovery from the Chinese team overall after they lost the first gold to Japan. In the end, the Japanese couldn't challenge them more. Especially on the women's side they remain untouchable. Very enjoyable matches from the Chinese but table tennis is my favourite sport after all.
  23. Unless YĆ©pez/Namuuntsetseg can do something about it. This is probably her last Olympics, right?
