I agree with you there could and should have been "more Japan". The protocol was quite strict here. Athletes had to travel back once their competition was over. Still good to see these games were to happen at all instead of someone's gloomy prediction of a cancellation to come true. Take it from an emotional person but I liked the medal ceremony tune. It did make me shed a tear at times. I got sentimental "now it's over" vibes from it. The graphics didn't do much for me either. I know many people didn't like the tilted London/Sochi flags but those were the best for me. Nothing wrong with simpler graphics but they could have been a bit more special. I think Paris will do a great job in terms of atmosphere. They want to involve the city more and surprise us so there's that to look forward to.

At first I didn't really feel excited. There was too much negativity revolving around the games and Covid, I didn't expect there to be a great atmosphere. Then came the first matches in softball and football before the opening ceremony, still didn't feel much. It all got better with the opening ceremony for me and all of a sudden, I got excited. It was the Olympics after all and the organisers did their best to make them happen. I was telling myself before, I would not change my sleeping schedule. In the end, I didn't, but I couldn't really sleep on the night towards the first day. I checked the first result online and then I got up and I was hooked immediately. Gone was the negativity the months before. And it felt like there were no spectators needed. The athletes created the tension and emotions all by themselves. Literally everyone was crying, over 4th place as well as the bronze. Daria Bilodid's bout comes to mind. Eventually, we got to see two weeks of exciting sports, shifts and turnarounds in the medal table. Many records were broken, many nations had their best games ever (some not, of course). About the new sports, I enjoyed all of them. There's none I would say they shouldn't return. Softball/baseball is one of my favourite team sports now, even if they take a while. Not to mention one of the less Euro-centric ones which is also nice to have. Skateboarding I fully enjoyed but definitely park more than street. I expected street to be more than just a bit of "slopestyle". Sport climbing too of course, and we can all agree on having to separate speed from lead/boulder. The combined format was not the greatest. Behind those three comes karate. Someone said it's more exciting than judo and I can see that. This time, judo felt like it dragged on too much with a lot of golden score decisions. Definitely wouldn't mind karate returning. The only slight problem I had was following the surfing. It's relaxing to watch but on busy days with tons of stuff going on I didn't feel like waiting for the waves to come. It's still nice to have it but it certainly didn't get my priority here. More about specific teams to follow later. All in all a better Olympics than I thought they would be. Sorry Japan didn't get to show its full potential here, but still. Arigatou Tokyo.

On that matter I hope users who have enjoyed the Tokyo Olympics will continue staying here. @vinipereira

As for continental representation, we have the following outcome: 2016 Rio Europe 139-155-165 [459] Americas 76-60-74 [210] Asia 69-54-88 [211] Aus. + Oceania 13-20-15 [48] Africa 10-18-18 [45] 2020 Tokyo Europe 147-173-203 [523] Asia 86-71-84 [241] Americas 71-69-71 [211] Aus. + Oceania 25-13-30 [68] Africa 11-12-14 [37] All in all, Asian countries have gained more medals on their soil, mainly thanks to Japan and China improving compared to last time. Europe with the largest gain in medals, also thanks to the many new events. Disappointing games for African countries this time. Doesn't help them when European and American nations take away medals from them in running. Australia and New Zealand boost Oceanias medal haul. Other than Fiji however, these remain the only three countries with medals for the region. Top 5 Europe GBR - 22-21-22 [65] ROC - 20-28-23 [71] NED - 10-12-14 [36] FRA - 10-12-11 [33] GER - 10-11-16 [37] Top 5 Asia CHN - 38-32-18 [88] JPN - 27-14-17 [58] KOR - 6-4-10 [20] IRI - 3-2-2 [7] UZB - 3-0-2 [5] Top 5 Americas USA - 39-41-33 [113] CAN - 7-6-11 [24] BRA - 7-6-8 [21] CUB - 7-3-5 [15] JAM - 4-1-4 [9] Top 5 Aus. + Oceania AUS - 17-7-22 [46] NZL - 7-6-7 [20] FIJ - 1-0-1 [2] Top 5 Africa KEN - 4-4-2 [10] UGA - 2-1-1 [4] RSA - 1-2-0 [3] EGY - 1-1-4 [6] ETH - 1-1-2 [4] -

After Final Day Rio: 306/306 events, 86 NOCs with medals After Final Day Tokyo: 339/339 events, 93 NOCs with medals On an exciting final day the US (46-37-38 in Rio) managed to snatch away first place from the Chinese (26-18-26 in Rio). Even on a loss of projected medals for the US team, they have been capable of holding off anyone else. The Chinese however with a better performance compared to Rio. Very fine games for the hosts here (12-8-21 in Rio). The Japanese have turned many bronze medals into golden ones this time. Their judo team has made them proud and the inclusion of new sports have helped them. Especially in skateboarding. In total medals however, they fall short on (19-17-20 in Rio under ) and the British (27-23-17 in Rio), holding off the Russians for 4th place. As stated before, remarkable games for the Australians with a gain of 9 golds and 17 more medals total compared to Rio (8-11-10). South Korea leave the Top 10 while the Dutch did not disappoint after the games have begun troublesome for them. 10 medals were required this time to reach the Top 10 in the medal table. As @Vektor already summarised, the biggest gainers and losers can be seen in his post. 4th place counter* (30) (22) (17) (16) (15) (14) (13) (12) (11) (10) (8) (7) (6) (5) (4) (3) (2) and the Refugee Olympic Team (1) *5th places in events that award two bronze medals; also includes QF losers in boxing and athletes in karate kumite one shy from the SF after the pool stage -
Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024 Sports Programme
Quasit replied to De_Gambassi's topic in Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024
In that case it'll be difficult for Paris 2024 to to be ranked higher than Tokyo 2020 for me. There's less events already and without weightlifting, that's one of the most exciting sports gone. Not to mention the quota cuts. -

In the end, it was Day 3 that has cost China the top spot with losses in diving, table tennis and weightlifting (which also prevented sweeps in all of those sports). -
I agree. It's just the last day that can't have many events because of the closing ceremony. I think they should have tennis on the last days. This time it was all racket sports at the same time and I give table tennis my priority. Tennis, albeit many top players miss the tournament, should be a highlight at the end of the games. I also know how you feel, this is my first Summer Games without my grandma and in 2016, my mum passed away a month before Rio.

Sounds crazy but I give them a shot at table tennis, at least for minor medals. They showed spirit hereand they can build around Simon Gauzy and Prithika Pavade on the next cycle. Gauzy beat Xu Xin on major occasions before like at the 2019 worlds (although Xu Xin can be erratic at times). Lebesson might also be around. I can picture a mixed medal for them. -
Interesting to have track cycling on the last day this time, let alone three events.

After Day 15 Rio: 294/306 events, 87 NOCs with medals After Day 15 Tokyo: 326/339 events, 93 NOCs with medals Who would have thought that the race for 1st/2nd between China and the US is open until the very last day? 4th place between GB and Russia as well. Everything comes pretty much down to boxing, volleyball and track cycling. Japan with another huge day for them safely 3rd and Australia will finish 6th. The record number of nations winning at least one medal has grown to 93 today. South Korea will find themselves out of the Top 10 this cycle. India are having their most succesful Summer Olympics winning 7 medals, including a gold, surpassing the amount of total medals by one (6 medals 2012 in London). Norway might finish Top 20 for the first time since 2004 (5-0-1; 17th in Athens). Brazil have become the second country (after GB) surpassing their medal winnings after hosting the previous Summer Games. On their best games, they finish with medals in the twenties range. Very unsuccessful games for South Africa, going down from 10 medals in Rio to just 3 in Tokyo. One of which came from the new sport of surfing. Also, Ethiopia might not only finish behind Kenya but also behind Uganda this time. 4th place counter* (30) (22) (17) (16) (15) (14) (13) (12) (10) (8) (7) (6) (5) (4) (3) (2) and the Refugee Olympic Team (1) *5th places in events that award two bronze medals; also includes QF losers in boxing and athletes in karate kumite one shy from the SF after the pool stage -
Artistic Swimming at the Summer Olympic Games 2020

The question is if there's someone knowledgable enough when it comes to this sport who can tell us if out-of-podium routines deserved to win medals. After all, it could simply be that Russia is the undisputed number one, with China easily the second-best and Ukraine the third-best. -

Well, it is Romashina's 7th Olympic gold. That's as many as Dressel and Ledecky. If she competes in Paris again, she could tie Latynina, Nurmi, Spitz and Carl Lewis. -
