They also get the most quotas per individual event of any combat sport though. Karate has 10, Wrestling and Taekwondo have 16, Boxing has between 16-28, and Judo has 19+ (generally some where in the mid/upper 20s). Fencing gets 34 quotas per individual event.

But 24 of those quotas are reserved for the team athletes. If you are not a great power and don't have a competitive team, you only have 2 quotas by ranking (in Europe) and another one by the Qualification Tournament. For a small country in fencing like us is extremely hard to get a single quota.

  2. 24th place for Spain but receiving points from 15 national jurors, which is not far from my personal record (6th place in the 2019 Open with 17 countries). As expected, the song is not good enough to be at the top of the lists (no medals and a 5th place as our best result), but it has managed to score a lot of low points, which is always nice. As I said this morning, I was afraid that nobody would vote for it given the high average quality of the edition.

It has been a tough year for Spanish music, with trap and reggaeton being the most listened genres and sending those songs is very likely an invitation to score 0 points, so I just chose a typical pop song, hoping to do it decently. My goal for the Open edition is to get back to the top10. I will be sending one of the most popular bands of the country, but I am still undecided which song will be…

Thanks again to everybody who has given points to Spain, especially @Werloc, @hckošice and @Wumosince it is the first time I receive points from Lithuania, Slovakia and Denmark. Hopefully, Romania, Greece, Canada, the US and the other Nordic countries will join that list soon .

Apart from “Cuando éramos dos”, my other candidate to represent Spain this year was “Chico Pum”:

  3. Some stats about Spanish votes (it is the 4th time I am participating, so I am just considering the last 4 editions):

    • It is the first time that Finland, Norway, Kazakhstan, Ireland and Greece receive points from Spain.
    • Italy is the first country that receives twelve points twice (Annual 2020). Furthermore, it is the only country alongside Portugal that has always received at least one point.
    • It is the first time that I didn't vote for Canada, but they keep the third place in the total number of points given (22).
    • First time the US receives a medal from Spain (6th place in Open 2019 was the last and only time I gave them points).

About the points received, nine countries have never given a point to Spain. Three of them (Romania, Czech Republic and the US) already voted in this first session and did not give us any points.

Goodbye from jury in National language

¡Felicidades a los 12 países que han recibido puntos! La competencia ha sido muy dura y ha habido más de 12 canciones que han entrado en mi playlist, pero no había sitio para todos. ¡Suerte para el resto del concurso!

  6. I think that the problem of handball isn't the system, it's the level of the sport, which is mainly Eurocentric. I agree with you that continental representation is very important at the Olympics, but that's already achieved with 2 American teams, 2 Asians and 1 African. The best teams should have the right to participate at the Olympics and with the current system, we already have very strong teams such as Croatia not making the cut to Tokyo. Applying the system you just proposed, we would have only 5 Europeans instead of 7, which means 2 more potential medal winners not being able to participate.

Given the progression of teams such as Egypt, Brazil or Argentina, I would say that in the medium term European teams will have good competitors from other continents and they will have the chance to earn the right to participate in the pitch. But I don't get the point of letting a team participate knowing that it is going to lose all the games, just because the country is in Asia or Africa and it isn't even the best of the continent.

Rugby sevens gives spots to 6 continents: Africa, Asia, North and South America, Europe and Oceania.

Basketball and field hockey give spots to 5 continents: Africa, Asia, Americas, Europe and Oceania.

Indoor volleyball also gives spots to 5 continents: Africa, Asia, North and South America, and Europe.

Handball only gives spots to 4 continents: Africa, Asia, Americas and Europe.

It wouldn't make any sense to give a quota to Oceania in handball, where the best team wouldn't be able to win a single game. Especially when this means that a top-tier team wouldn't qualify because of that.

In my opinion, Asia and Oceania should have combined continental qualifiers in the majority of sports due to the lack of represenattivty of many Oceanian qualifiers (in team sports my only exception would be rugby).

I think? @phelps, do you know something about this? The FIE site only says that the best results decide in case of a tie.

I was just asking because next week we could have that situation in the women's foil with Spain, Poland and Israel, and I am not sure if the category of the event is important or it doesn't matter.

We are talking about Women's épéé where Egypt won the zonal champs.

    • In the event of equal points, the ranking is based on who has gained the most first places, then second places, etc.

It doesn't say that one event is more important than the other. So I think Egypt is ahead in case of a tie both in Men's and Women's épéé.

So, in the case of individual events, is more important a gold medal in a Satellite than a silver medal in a Grand Prix?

Yes, Egypt is ahead in case of tie because they have a better best result (a 1st place in the zonal champs)

They had a 3rd place in the zonal champs. Is that result better (40 points) than a 13th place in the World Champs (42 points)?

Also, foil or sabre isn't harder to understand than most Olympic sports. I have no clue most of the time what's going in the "artistic" sports with their point systems, but I would never get rid of any of the gymnastics events. Foil or sabre are also not harder to understand than other combat sports like judo.

Well, priority system in foil and especially sabre might be a little more difficult to understand for a person who has never watched fencing before.
