And it’s much more interesting to have these athletes, than some more from the already dominant countries. I find it fun to cheer the little teams on. Plus, many of these athletes have a amazing stories that really capture the Olympic spirit.

Is it interesting for you cheering for a boat that you know beforehand that it is going to finish last? I find fun to cheer for those small countries when they have some options to compete and at least beat some other nations (for example Andorra in canoeing slalom), but when the only achievement has been to participate in a World Championship...

If they show a minimum level I don't have a problem on having these nations at the Olympics, but I feel a little bit unfair that some sailors have to qualify through a very hard process, while for others is just enough to fill a document. For this reason I really like the minimum requirements of sports like equestrian, shooting or team events in fencing.

Anyway, I respect your point and I don't think that having these small nations is an important problem, but if I had to take the decission, I would reduce these free quotas.

  2. I understand the reasons behind free quotas for small nations in Oceania, but I think they should add some requirements to give the quotas, like finishing top50 in at least one World Championship of the cycle or something similar, to assure that all the participants have a decent level to be at the Olympics.

I think that having a boat finishing always in the last place, 20 minutes behind the winner, is not going to help to the development of the sport, and this person from :PNG is preventing someone better from an European nation to be there. Probably the European sailor who has not quaified yet is not going to win a medal anyway, but at least he will compete.

Spain used to have a decent team a while back. Great Britain has shown they can be competitive in Softball. World Baseball Classic means more internationally than the World Series by the way.

Yes, we won the silver medal in 2016. The problem is that the team was formed by Latin-Americans (mainly players from Venezuela and Cuba) who were playing in minor leagues in the US and their grand-parents were from Spain. In fact, a national newspaper wrote a very interesting article about them, and only one player was born here. The reality of baseball in Spain is that we have a league of only 8 amateur teams and the sprot is even less popular than ice hockey.

Handball final: Europe v. Europe or Europe v. Europe

Baseball Final: North America v. Asia or North America v. South America or Asia v. South America (and with Australia and Netherlands, both Oceania and Europe have realistic chances as well)

In women handball, Brazil was the World Champion in 2013 and South Korea has had a very good team for many years (I'm not sure now, but I guess they even won a World medal a few years ago).

In baseball, Netherlands wasn't even able to qualify for the Olympics, so I don't think they have real options right now to be medal contenders.

Western Asia is the Middle East. The OCA refers to that region as “Western Asia”.

Artistic Swimming has more participating countries than many sports on the program.

Baseball is also popular in Chinese Taipei, China, Philippines, and many of the Oceania nations (most have baseball/softball fields). It will be played in both the next Asian Games, and Pacific Mini Games.

Really Baseball/Softball getting kicked out of the Olympics shows how Euro-Centric everything is. How the fuck is handball hanging on, but baseball “isn’t diverse enough”? :dunno:

According to Wikipedia, IHF has 201 full members, while WBSC only has 141 countries...

I think handball is diverse enough to be at the Olympics, and the main reason why baseball isn't is that they don't take the Olympics seriously.

Netherlands is looking strong, which is a bad news for our Olympic quota chances here. Now we have to win the gold to get the quota, and I can't even remember the last time we beat Spain in women's water polo.

Don't worry, as Spain is already qualified, the team hasn't prepared specifically this championship, so you should win a hypotethical match against us.

    yeah, thanks.

That´s quite shocking, mainly because this team is of young girls (almost entirely juniors) I already mentioned that on the first posts of this thread, so to win a match at EURO must be something incredible for the girls and against such water polo powerhouse like Serbia, this is just insane. The girls will certainly remember this win for their entire lifes.

Sure, mathematically we can, but realistically I seriously doubts about SVK beating another powerhouse of this sport during one week lol. a proverbe says : Miracles do not happen two times in a row  :d

Well, I don't think it's a miracle. It's true that Croatia was the favorite today, but I have seen a few games and I don't see a huge difference of level between SVK-CRO-SRB... So, if I have to bet I would do it for Serbia, but if you play as today (I only saw the 2nd half) I'm sure you could qualify.

So both Spanish players (Pablo González and Eva Aizpuria) have won gold medals in ice hockey. I guess they have not been the most important players of their teams (even though Pablo scored a goal in the final), but it is fun to see some Spanish ahletes doing well in Winter sports.

Yes, I believe that was their recruitment strategy. It’s not the like the sport is popular in the country. Brazil actually plays better than Spain I think.

Last year there were 200 players in Spain, but I don't know how many of them were of the right age to participate here. Probably, no more than 10.

As always there are grey areas and we take them on a case-by-case basis (see example of the Moldovan song in the previous contest).

Just because the singer is outnumbered by band members does not mean that the song could not represent the nation of the singer. We would look at how the song is credited (who is the featured artist or if it is a 50-50 collaboration, etc.). If you want you can PM me the example and I could look at it and it would be easier for me to explain.

    Thanks for the explanation!

I don't have a specific song. I asked because yesterday I was listening to a recap of the most popular songs of Spanish artists this year and I realized that there were a lot of collabs with Latin-American singers/bands, so I was just curious about TISC eligibility. In case I select one of these songs, I will ask you before.

  11. These days I have been reading the rules and I have a doubt about the elegibility of a song. In case the song is a collab between a singer of Country A (main singer) and a duet (or band) of Country B, would that song be elegible for Country A? Would it be different if the collab is with only a singer of Country B instead of a duet/band?

Section 2 (Artist chocie and eligibility) only mentions the case of bands, but I'm not sure if a collab should also be included here.
