Italy won 211/6 to 210 against in the first match of the first round of the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge, the initial step of the qualification pathway towards the India 2023 World Cup... Italy started on defense and were able to contain Kenya's bats to a reasonable score, eliminating all of their batsmen in the last over of the 1st inning... then, debutant Nikolai Leonard Smith (Irish born, but with Italian mother, therefore eligible for our team) put on a show in the 2nd inning, becoming the first Italian player to score a 100 (102 not out, to be precise) in the first ever match under our Flag and leading the team to easily reach the target and win the match against all odds... this is also the first time ever that Italy defeat a team that in the past has played at least once the "true" world cup ( Kenya reached the semifinals in 2003)...

because of its particular nature (it's still a naturally refrigerated track, the last one on the main Bobsleigh/Skeleton/Luge circuit), St.Moritz is only active 2 months/year... they couldn't use that track for the aim of an international luge school/developing program in any case, even if they really wanted to...

it's mainly because FIL has an agreement with the Igls officials to act as "international luge school" and home of their own "development program" for small/non-luge Countries (like the Aigle velodrome in Switzerland in track cycling)... of course, Igls has been chosen because a) they agreed on that and b) because it's an "easy" track...surely they couldn't use tracks like Lake Placid, Park City or Sigulda to play that role (unless you want to read about severe injuries almost once every day)... p.s. a short track to start a few more very young guys to the art of artificial luge is a great investment, not a waste of funds (especially if Natural Track Luge becomes an Olympic sport and the Austrian Artificial Luge team loses an enormous source of recruiting, as NTL is nowadays)... it's more the cost of mantaining that track...which is the main reason the Cesana track was dismantled and the reason why Cortina didn't make any refurbishing for years until they were forced to close everything down...nobody wanted to pay for those (very high) maintainance and "updating" costs, once the building was put in place... hopefully, now they've reached an agreement on this question that should keep the new Cortina track working for at least 25 years after the end of the 2026 Olympics (p.s. knowing what Italian politicians say and do, I don't trust them until we get to 2051 and see the track still used for major competitions in that year )...

well, despite that, Loch has done well on Lake Placid's track more than once... but today he made a capital mistake in the first run and wasn't perfect even in the second run, so he did climb some positions, but not as many as he already did in the past... however, yes...LP and Sigulda are the 2 worst tracks for them...because start times are normally not so important (there are quite a few tricky sections that are definitely more important than the starting phase) and also because those are the 2 tracks where they can't train at all during the year... if only it was possible to find a non-German FIL president who cuts the number of races and training weeks in Germany...

you could see the climbing time running on the graphics while watching the live pictures (and you can still see it if you watch the replay of the event on Youtube, obviously)... those times are not registered anywhere on the competition rankings (even if thay are the tie-breaking criteria between all the climbers who reached the same hold, in this case the 4 girls who ended with 31+)...

and Ito completes her climb with a score of only 24+, which means that Mia Krampl wins the Lead section and with an epic comeback earns the 2nd Slovenian Olympic spot for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games... however, Ito wins the OQT... sincerely, I can feel the pain in Rakovec's heart...

and this climb by Chanourdie has completely turned things around in the Slovenian battle for the Olympic spot!!! now she's between Krampl (who's leading the Lead section with 32 holds) and Rakovec (3rd with 31+) by virtue of climbing time of all the girls stuck at 31+...Chanourdie, in fact, did it in 3.03 mins, meanwhile Rakovec in 4.16... with only Futaba Ito still left to go, the only hope for Rakovec is the Japanese to overtake Krampl... drama, big drama in Toulouse! tbh, it's unfair that someone who doesn't have any interest in a competition ends up deciding the future of 2 different athletes...it should be a direct match-up, not a strange combination of other people's scores...

and good comeback up to bronze for D-Fisch... no Germans in the top 8...

South Korea really dominated this stage with 6 Gold Medals, followed by a bunch of Nations with 1 Gold Medal each ( Canada, China, Italy, Hungary, Netherlands)... Japan, Russia and USA also won at least 1 medal (but no gold), meanwhile Kazakhstan were close, really close to join the medal table, but unfortunately they were overtaken by Russia in the last turn of the men's Relay and so they had to be happy with a bitter 4th place...
