Quite peculiar one I was thinking to pick something for Peru last year but someone else was faster... Anyway, if I had an opportunity I would have picked Los Saicos, one of the first punk (proto-punk) bands in the world. Members of the band claimed they were the first punk band which I believe isn't the truth, but they most likely were among first ones. http://dangerousminds.net/comments/if_perus_los_saicos_arent_the_first_punk_band_theyre_pretty_close

Hopman Cup 2017 (January 1-7) provisional teams have been announced while ago. Group A Kristina Mladenovic/Richard Gasquet Andrea Petkovic/Alexander Zverev Heather Watson/Dan Evans Belinda Bencic/Roger Federer Group B Daria Gavrilova/Nick Kyrgios Petra Kvitova/Adam Pavlasek Lara Arruabarrena/Feliciano Lopez Coco Vandeweghe/Jack Sock I wondered will we have some African team any time soon. At the moment South African women's tennis is nowhere and the only decent African team I can think of would be with Ons Jabeur and Malek Jaziri. Meanwhile, South American women are also poorly ranked... Hopefully Japan/China/Kazakhstan will show interest some day.

Ethiopia Ethio-jazz One of Ethiopia’s greatest innovations, Ethiopian Jazz, termed “Ethio-jazz,” is a unique fusion of traditional Ethiopian music with jazz, Afro-funk, soul, and Latin rhythms. Marked by eerie and ancient-sounding tones, typical of traditional Ethiopian music, Ethio-jazz also displays the sensual undertones of soulful jazz. The foundations of Ethio-jazz The roots of Ethiopia’s jazz tradition can be traced back to the 1950s with Nerses Nalbandian, who laid a strong foundation for the development of contemporary Ethiopian music. Of Armenian origin, Nalbandian’s family settled in Ethiopia, escaping the genocide in Turkey around 1915. Following in the footsteps of his uncle, Kervok Nalbandian, a renowned maestro in Ethiopia, Nalbandian took over as the head of the National Opera when his uncle retired. Tasked by Emperor Haile Selassie to compose music for the National Theatre, Nalbandian had to figure out how to harmonise local sounds in big band arrangement without destroying the music’s authenticity. Ingeniously, Nalbandian set about solving this complexity – given Ethiopian music’s unique scales – by borrowing from Western instrumentation. Often regarded as the pioneer of modern Ethiopian music, Nalbandian undeniably set the basis for the evolution of Ethio-jazz. Mulatu Astatke, the father of Ethio-jazz The father of Ethio-jazz as we now know it is Mulatu Astatke. Born in 1943 in Jimma, a city in the Western part of Ethiopia, Astatke surprisingly chose to study aeronautic engineering in North Wales in the late 1950s. Formally introduced to music and the arts during his studies, which allowed for many electives, Astatke discovered his natural talent and eventual passion for music. Astatke went on to study classical music and instruments at Trinity College in London and worked with a number of leading British jazz players. However, inspired by other African students in London who were presenting their music and culture to European audiences, he desired to compose and promote Ethiopian music. At the same time, Astatke wanted to learn more about the fascinating world of jazz, which led him to pursue his musical studies at the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1958, the only jazz school in the world at the time. Being the first Ethiopian, let alone African student at the college, Astatke became enthralled with the idea of combining Ethiopian music with Western jazz and rhythms. After much thought and improvisation, Astatke finally managed to combine the unusual pentatonic scale-based melodies of traditional Ethiopian music with the 12-note harmonies and instrumentation of Western music, giving birth to “Ethio-jazz.” The bigger jazz scene in New York compelled Astatke to move once again, and it was during the 1960s that Ethio-jazz fully came to life. Greatly inspired by the likes of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and other jazz stars, Astatke established an Ethiopian Quartet, and with successive trips between the States and Ethiopia over the years, he produced two albums: Afro-Latin Soul 1 & 2 in 1966 and Mulatu of Ethiopia in 1972. Additionally: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/sep/05/mulatu-astatke-man-created-ethiopian-jazz Hopefully, you'll enjoy the following remarkable piece of Ethio-jazz. Final Standing available here. OlympicIRL kacz187 Bartek Congratulation to kacz187 for amazing picks, with perfect use of jolly. Bartek was close to silver, but bronze with jolly is also a very satisfying result. If I remember well, OlympicIRL was volleyball olympic champion in London 2012, this time he snatches silver medal. Congratulations! I shall have basketball done by the end of the next week (or maybe more) and then with handball we are closing team sports. -

I am not an expert in players' heights but I wouldn't be surprised if she actually is. Dunno about Henin though

OMG, that last game Congrats Pome! And I thought she would beat Angie. Angie's serve was really bad today, also many unforced errors. But Domi constantly pushed her with her amazing offensive shots, returns... I was afraid after miss on third match point, but she survived it and won biggest title in career. Congrats Dominika

I am working on volleyball, I have to process 10 more pages and then results will be up. -
Kerber vs. Cibulkova rematch, just as I wanted Sad for Sveta, but once she lost that second set it was inevitable the fatigue will kill her. Together with Domi's incredible fighting spirit Angie might regret she beat Keys

Clio - Faces sooo catchy
-
Well, I do hope top seeds can provide a quality match but I'm more eager to watch Sveta and Pome

I have to say, GB have great filed of young and promising girls. I hope Konta's rise will inspire youngsters to do better. Swan and Christie are the ones to watch. From time to time there are flashes from Boulter, Dart. Dunne, Taylor (if any of them fulfills potential, it'll be great). And there are some younger with expectations. Will Robson ever return, I don't know. Also, another Russian wave probably is going to happen. Kasatkina is one of them and probably bearer. Blinkova, Kalinskaya, Vikhlyantseva, Komardina, Pervushina, Potapova, Zhuk... Would like to see Hungarian trio of Galfi, Bondar and Stollar doing well...

Great tournament in Tampico, ITF $50,000, for young players. All quarterfinalists are 21 or younger. Mertens (1995) vs. Swan (1999) Flink (1996) vs. Arconada (1998) Rodriguez (1995) vs. Christie (1997) Podoroska (1997) vs. Zhuk (1999)

Abigail Tere-Apisah from is into Bendigo ITF $50,000 semifinal! As a qualifier, she beat Yuki Christina Chiang (USA, qualifier) in first round and then surprised third seed Israeli Julia Glushko world #167, and just two years ago ranked #79, in three sets. She backed up this win with a win over young Australian Naiktha Bains. She is playing top seed, Japanese Risa Ozaki, for the place in the final. With this result Papuan girl is expected to enter top 450 on the WTA list!
