  8. South Africa has lowered their strict requirements for qualifying to the Olympics. If a team (or athlete) can show they are competitive then they will accept quotas won during continental qualifiers. For field hockey, they likely used a provision in the qualification document that states nations must rank in the top 20 in order to be considered for a continental reallocation as an argument that the FIH considers a top 20 world ranking as competitive. For water polo, their federation likely used South Africa's performance at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships where the men finished 12th and the women finished 14th as proof they are competitive (even though we all know the truth). Sadly for women's rugby sevens they were unable to place a passable argument. The team failed to qualify as a core team for every world series during this Olympic cycle and the team finished 14th at the 2018 Sevens World Cup and unlike water polo, I imagine the South African Olympic Committee knows more about rugby sevens and whether or not that was a competitive performance.

  9. It's a tight fight between probably two or three countries to get inside the top-30 (women) and get a second women's quota... This was also the Brazilian goal, but one might wonder how much of it is still alive. At the very least Jaque Mourão will have to start in all the other races she can do (because yes, there has indeed apparently been an exception made so not only yesterday's top-2 is qualified, as was rumoured yesterday).

  17. To be fair, she's good friends with the Argentinian and has simply had much more contact with her during the years Much better result than yesterday, this time she still clearly had some power left in the end, unlike the total blow-up of yesterday. Jaque Mourao is simply stronger at the moment, especially her race yesterday was very impressive.

    World Games 2022

I missed this, but last month the WFFD announced the countries qualified for the ultimate event in Flying Disc. Here is their explanation for how the quotas were allocated: “The WFDF Ultimate Committee led by WFDF Vice President Brian Gisel has considered whether a standalone qualifying tournament for TWG2022 would be feasible and it considered an early 2022 event proposal, but ultimately decided that it would not make sense. For that reason, and in light of the cancellation of WUGC 2020/21, the qualification of countries for The World Games 2022 will be based on Section 2 of the Qualification System for WFDF Ultimate World Games Events, Version 2008 – 1.1 (approved May 18th, 2008, and updated in 2019) which states: “The qualifying event for the World Games will be the most recent Ultimate World Championship event, which was held at least 8 months prior to the World Games.” In this case, the most recent Ultimate World Championship event is WUGC 2016.” So the countries qualified in Flying Disc are: Poland is the only country that participated in Wroclaw that failed to qualify for Birmingham 2022.

  22. What does politics have to do with anything? This is about sports. Should Denmark not be allowed to host the men's handball championships because they aren't as relevant politically, yet are one of the top nations in the sport? I also don't mind Austria or Switzerland hosting the Winter Olympics because they too are quite relevant in winter sports. Similarly the Netherlands could host the Summer Olympics if it wants to. We are also talking about a 32 year gap, in different cities so I don't see quite the fuss.

  23. Yeah, it has do with how FIS Points work. Bendika was seeded much lower than she should be, since she normally competes in Biathlon. Because a “weaker” skier won the race, the points were factored higher than if a lower seeded skier had won. Becuase Bendika skied so fast, and was ranked so low, the FIS Points were factored in a difficult manner for slower athletes. Hopefully that makes sense, maybe someone like @heywoodu could explain it more eloquently than me.
