I think they're really creative and work well as pictograms. Especially badminton, rowing and track cycling are really cool!

My thoughts exactly. These are fantastic from an artistic and genre innovation perspective, but they’re not really a successful form of non-verbal communication in regards to being universally understood.

These pictograms defeat their purpose as soon as you take 5+ seconds to distinguish the sport.

I said to someone on Twitter.. creative teams for TV networks will have some fun with these.  Might not be the most useful to identify what sport they're all for, which will be unfortunate for people on the ground in Paris
