The question is whether other nations will follow suit. EU/NATO nations may find it difficult to abandon France who I imagine is working very hard to prevent them from boycotting. If it does gain traction it will only be because they know the IOC is waffling on their position

It would seem Ukraine hasn’t made a decision on a potential boycott yet, but will meet soon to discuss potential actions if athletes from BLR/RUS are allowed to compete at Paris 2024.

Yeah, well, we could see some behind the door actions to make Ukraine drop that boycott ideas. It doesn't help France is literally one country that is always willing to talk to Putin. It would be much easier with this boycott if the OG were held in some Asian country for instance. We deffo haven't heard the last of this story yet...

I guess we haven't seen a major event OG or WC without political propaganda from 2006 WC, maybe London 2012 , but this propaganda started way before the start of OG, I feel like we are returning to 80s which I didn't live in

Back in 1980 it took a lot of political push from the world's most influential nation and even then the United States only picked up a handful of mid to high economic nations to join them on their boycott. Most of Europe still competed in some capacity.

 

Even if the United States was 100% in for the boycott in 2024 I doubt they could convince a similar number of African and Asian nations to join them like they did in 1980.

On tennis, the are russian and belarussian player. Why no one speak on them, and on the olympics everyone says "boycott, boycott"?

The Olympics is ultimately a competition of nations, proving which of them are the best in certain Olympic sports. The ATP/WTA Tour are the literal opposite of the Games, it's a professional individual sport, it's about the achievement of individual players, not about nations. Which is why it's so strange to see professional tennis players at the Games because that's the only time when they truly compete for their nation outside of the Davis and BJK Cup. 

 

The more professional a sport becomes, it's seen more and more as just an entertainment industry thing that's separated from the nationalistic side of view of sports.

My view hasn't changed on this. Once you cross a bridge, you won't back down until things have settled. The debate on Russia and Belarus should have ended the moment IOC announced the ban. If they make exceptions now it would make it seem that the West is weak and the Russians are winning. The fact of the matter is that you can't separate the Russian athletes from their state, it's impossible. Just like you can't separate Hungarian athletes from the Orbán system. Russian athletes are all collectively part of the nationalistic state and get money from it. If they despise the state, seek refugee status in the West or anywhere in the world where you can hide from Putin. The antiwar sentiment of any Russian athlete means absolutely nothing if they are still sponsored by the Russian state.

Russian and Belarus players are very lucky indeed , but ATP and WTA are very independent organizations to IOC , they can always have their way and they simply know that most of these athletes don't live n Russia or Belarus , they actually live in America , so they are much opened to western ideas and having a very good number of Russian and Belarus players inside top 50 was a big factor as well , especially we had medvedev ranked no.1 in the world at this time and he was the US OPEN  Champion and AUS OPEN runner-up , so it would have affected the quality of the game for sure
