Summer Olympic Games 2020 Qualification Systems

Recommended Posts

Wow, that document is so poorly written. Lawyers can eat it for breakfast.

At one place it says that a NOC can select 1 boat per event, but at other place it says 2.

Also it says that 6 K2/C2 quota places in total are up for grabs in non-European qualifiers, even if they actually mean 3.

Sprint canoeing is always so complicated (especially reallocation) and they rarely tell us who is qualified.

So it looks like a nation will be able to compete with two boats in the same event.

Australia/New Zealand will need at least one (or two if they other qualified) other Oceania nations to compete in order to gain continental quotas.

Six kayakers only per nation, but two boats. It's stupid, Both nations already would need doble starters if they want to compite in all kayak events..... It would not upgrade the level.... I really don't understand what they were thinking...

For example Spain had medals in the last World championship in K1-200, K2 and K4, we have to left out one of them. And then you need two of them for K1 1000 already...

however, imho the sentence at point B4 saying that any NOC can qualify 2 boats per event is wrong (unless they do mean that a NOC can qualify a boat in each of the men and women's "parallel" events, so to say...I mean, K1 sprint M and W, K1 long distance M and W and so on)...

all the rest of the document clearly let readers understand that there will be only 1 boat per NOC per event (and with such few boats starting in any Olympic race, it would be crazy and extremely unfair to do otherwise)...

by the way, canoeing program at the Olympics is by far the most stupid, unfair and badly built of all the sports included in the Olympic schedule...

I think a second boat can compete at the Olympics, but the athlete has to qualify in a different event.

I asked the ICF for clarification.

Once again the world ranking is given way too much importance...

2 years ago I would care about this and already tried to calculate and find out our possible opponents in this OQT . :d but considering our current situation there is no way Iran can beat a top 6 team (most probably at its home) and qualify directly. so we have to focus on beating China and Australia in AVC QT.

but still I would like to see our possible group to see which teams are going to beat us in the OQT. :d

    • Canoe Sprint There is a now a cap of 5 athletes per gender in the kayak events (down from 6 in 2024). The World Championships has been replaced by the Olympic Qualification Rankings.   K2 lost 2 boat quotas while K4 has gained 1 boat quota. Quota distribution is quite complicated as it usually is for canoe sprint. They also force nations to compete in a minimum number of events based on the number of athletes qualified; 2 and 3 athletes per boat class must compete in 2 events, 4 must compete in all 3 events and 5 must compete in all 3 events and have two entries in the K1 event.
    • Wrestling will have a completely new format, I do not like the changes. ranking isn't really a good idea in this sport, this will force wrestlers to compete in so many events to collect points. which is not good for their health. specially with the current UWW ranking points distribution system which is plain stupid   they are also gifting 18 quotas to very weak countries by that last qualification event. but I understand their point of view. can't wait to see lots of Russian wrestlers compete for weak countries for that 1 available quota.
    • Canoe Slalom Quotas from men's/women's K1 have been moved to men's/women's KX1. K1 will now have 14 quotas while KX1 will have 10 quotas. C1 remains at 17 quotas. Athletes may participate in other events up to a maximum of 2 athletes per NOC.   The World Championship qualifier has been dropped in favour of the Olympic Qualification Rankings (7 K1, 10 C1, 3 KX1), afterwards you have the Continental Qualifiers (1 per boat) and then a new Global Qualifier (2 per boat).   There were a few changes regarding ways to ensure an athlete can only obtain 1 quota. The biggest being at each stage the boat priority is K1 > KX1 > C1 for the rankings and KX1 > K1 > C1 for the continental/global qualifiers. This basically means if the same athlete qualifiers in multiple boats then the quota will be given to the kayak over canoe.
    • I'll post significant changes periodically. I'll start with the recently added/updated documents.   Archery The addition of mixed compound (12M & 12W) forced a reduction on the recurve side. The mixed compound quotas are distributed as follows   Host - 1 World Championships - 3 Continental Games - 5 World Ranking List - 2 Final Qualifier - 1   To compensate the team events will now only have 8 nations. 2 quotas were removed from the World Ranking List and 2 were removed from the Final Qualifier.   Individual recurve and mixed recurve distribution is the same
    • In Rome, it would be useful to roof the swimming pool complex at Foro Italico, possibly with the option of retracting the roof and covering the tennis court complex. Overall, there's a lot to do, for example, compared to Budapest, but unfortunately, this is Italy How many years has Roma been building their new stadium, and they keep pushing back the completion date- now I read it's 2030? and it should be ready. The same goes for Milan- there should be a modern complex of indoor swimming pools with 50 meters pools, etc., but there's a problem with one stupid football stadium, which will only be built after an ultimatum from UEFA
