Russian and Belarus athletes will compete in all fencing competitions , they are waiting for IOC to decide whether they will compete under their flags or as neutrals

Why cancel, exactly? I mean, other than a protest, which ends up only hurting every single fencer now (because they lose a competition), instead of only those from Russia and Belarus, and thus mostly seems to be a silly thing to do.

It's not like FIE's decision would have changed the competition in any way, since the RUS and BLR fencers wouldn't have been able to get there anyway.

The Fencing Federation of Ukraine said yesterday following a meeting of its Presidium that it would boycott any tournaments where Russian and Belarusian fencers were able to compete.

"It was decided not only not to go to duels at competitions of any level with directly Russian and Belarusian athletes, but also for our athletes, coaches and judges not to participate in competitions in which Russian or Belarusian athletes with active involvement will participate."

Seemingly Tauberbischofsheim is the home town (or at least the club where he learnt to fence) of Thomas Bacholympicchampionfencing1976, so this is more than just a a meaningless gesture.

    • Also a first: never before has a Dutch pair participated in the games, according to media rapports.
    • The Technical director of the Dutch Olympic Committee has, using his discretionary powers, decided to include them in the team. He cites “extra-ordinary circumstances”, but has not stated what they are. The use of these powers is quite rare. They were used in 2022 to nominate an alpine-skier.
