She just tested positive for Covid, so she will miss the Greek National Championships this weekend. She would've been the heavy favourite to win both the 100m and 200m, which would have given her a lot of points to move up in the Race to Oregon ranking and probably she would've qualified in the 200m. I think this might be the first time ever where we don't qualify anyone in a women's track event, or any track event for that matter. The only chance is for one of our young hurdlers (Anais Karagianni in 100H and Dimitra Gnafaki in 400H) to get a big PR this weekend and sneak in via ranking. And both already got PRs recently (Karagianni has gone from 13.31 to 13.15 this season, and Gnafaki from 57.00 to 56.67), so I'm not sure how realistic it is that they'll be able to improve so much in so little time. Yeah, it's the first time ever that we will not be sending any track athlete to the World Athletics Championships. Still we are sending 17 athletes to Eugene which is more than we sent to Daegu 2011, Beijing 2015 and Doha 2019. Same amount as Moscow 2013. If Spanoudaki didn't get covid, she 95% would've qualified in the women's 200m and also had a chance in the 100m. Irini Vasiliou won the women's 400m in the National Championships with 52.32, but she didn't compete in enough races to make it via ranking. Karagianni is 44th and Pesiridou 45th in the women's 100 hurdles in the Race to Oregon, so it's unlikely that they'll get in as they would need 4-5 more withdrawals. Pesiridou really should've made it but her performances were bad this year, until recently she finally started doing better again. Gnafaki 46th in the women's 400 hurdles. Needed to be top 40. Douvalidis had a lot of issues so he didn't try to make it to Eugene (men's 110 hurdles). First time he's missing the World Championships since 2009. Going to be weird not competing in any track events. We have 7 jumpers, 5 throwers, and 5 race walkers. Also it's the first time since 2007 that Filippidis doesn't compete. He hasn't been anywhere since Tokyo so I think it's safe to say he retired, he's 35 now and was mediocre the last few years. Werloc 3,171 Posted July 2, 2022 #18 Share Posted July 2, 2022 Small and humble team for Lithuania at these World Championships: Team Lithuania Women 400m - Modesta Justė Morauskaitė High Jump - Urtė Baikštytė Discus Throw - Ieva Zarankaitė Javelin Throw - Liveta Jasiūnaitė 20km Race Walk - Brigita Virbalytė Men Discus Throw - Mykolas Alekna, Andrius Gudžius 20km Race Walk - Marius Žiūkas 35km Race Walk - Artur Mastianica Aina Grikšaitė - triple jump is in 33rd right now, but in top 32 there's one athlete that is already retired, so she might get an invitation still. Similarly to team Slovakia, our team is also in recovery mode, which is why most of them were not able to collect enough points and are focusing on the European Championships as well, where I've counted that a 20+ athlete team is still a possibility. And although some are recovering and slowly getting their form up for the ECH, one of our strongest athletes, javelin thrower Edis Matusevičius didn't even get to start this season at all, I hope he gets back in 2023. De_Gambassi 1,225 Posted July 2, 2022 #19 Share Posted July 2, 2022 The modest french delegation : https://www.athle.fr/asp.net/main.html/html.aspx?htmlid=6385 Only potential semi finalists were selected, wich counts for only 7 female athletes in individual events and 21 males. No much expectations there. I guess 1 or 2 medals is what to be hoped for (Kevin Mayer, the hurdlers, maybe the 800m guys, a miracle on the pole vault...). TBH, It could also easely be a zero medal championships for us, witch only happen twice in 1983 and 1993. The future looks brighter though with recent record youth championships, but Paris 2024 is likely to be too soon for most of them. OlympicIRL 5,532 Posted July 2, 2022 #20 Share Posted July 2, 2022 Ireland Team For Oregon World Championships Ireland is sending a team of 19 athletes for the upcoming World Championships in Oregon. Ciara Mageean, Phil Healy and Fionnuala McCormack have withdrawn to focus instead on the European Championships in Munich. The most exciting athlete is 19-year-old Rhasidat Adekele as she qualified for both the 200m and 400m but she will concentrate on the 400m only. Her range of distances from 60m up to 400m is impressive and she still does not train specifically for 400m so when she begins to focus on that distance she could run some special times. She will also be an asset to our future 4x400m women's and mixed relay teams on the road to Paris 2024. Apart from that, it is probably going to be a very low-key world championships for Ireland but I am excited to see how Dave Kenny performs in the 20km walk. As per usual, Ireland will have absolutely no representatives in field events.
