Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024 Qualification Systems

Recommended Posts

A comparison vs. 2020.

Dressage - The Group F qualifier will be at the 2022 World Championships, assuming an eligible team competes. Two individual Group D/E quotas will be determined by the 2023 Pan American Games (the other 2 will be through the rankings as before).

Eventing - 1 additional team quota determined at the 2022 World Championships (there are three fewer individual quotas). The document is a bit ambiguous on whether the D/E quotas are combined or separate. I think they are combined based on the proposal, and they forgot to specify that the groups will get 4 quotas.

Jumping - The 2022 Nations Cup Final will determine one quota (taken from the 2022 World Championships). Group C currently only has one qualifier rather than splitting them up. The individual D/E quotas have changed, only 3 will be determined at the 2023 Pan American Games while the fourth will be decided through the rankings.

Lucky for me I still have the canoe sprint file up on my computer.

The biggest thing I see is in the reallocation of the athlete quotas at the 2023 World Championships. Before, the reallocations would go to the K4 boats first, but now they won't.

Extreme Canoe Slalom - why do we not end up with only 3 paddlers in each event???  I am sure that competitors selected for e.g. WC1/WK1 can also race in WX1, but where does it actually say that?

My guess is that a lot of countries will qualify in K1 and/or C1 but will instead send X1 specialists because they have better medal chances in those events. Which will make the C1, K1 and X1 fields all weaker than they should be.

    • That was known from the start for  and will be planned for.   Sadly just the reality of sports in North America. Canada and the US are both huge, a flight from Vancouver to Halifax or from Seattle to Miami is north of five hours. Every sports league in North America has to deal with this kind of travel logistics on the regular, so none of this will seem particularly unusual to a North American player.
    • That’s not a long distance, it’s barely a 2h flight and there is no difference in timezone. Easily doable for fans as well.
