Brazilian tv is showing a problem with the mast for one of the flags, which is falling. Hopefully they can fix it in time.

I still remember a problem with the center structure used for the Tokyo segment in Rio closing ceremony, which took like 5 minutes to get off the field because of an issue with the wheels or something. It was nerve wrecking to watch it live.

Very original segment with the horses. And it fits nicely with equestrian and modern pentathlon. So far, this ceremony is excellent. Everything is great!

Agree about the horses but...... let's just say they left their mark :p

Apparently less then 100 people were in the seats for the Canada v Argentina game (Mind you it was cold). Hoping this picksup

Not exactly an excuse, but some friends that are in Lima are saying that the weather is very cold right now, which is not a good match for summer sports (and I know this because I almost froze to death in one or two events in Rio).

Kahena Kunze joins her. It's the first time Brazil has two people as flag bearers, although other nations have done it before.

Isaquias Queiroz is a nice choice, as Vinicius mentioned. He won three medals at the Rio Olympics (only Brazilian athlete to ever win three medals at a single edition) and was the world champion in C-1 500 last year. His personal life is drama-filled as well: he lived in a stilt house in a very poor area of the country and his coach died last year. He's typically Brazilian: everything goes against him, but he still manages to beat the odds and be the best.

Martine is a girl from a rich family with a famous and influent father who has lots of personal contacts within the Brazilian Olympic Committee. And her sport is widely unknown in Brazil.

I could be wrong, but my bet is that they're "saving" Isaquias for Tokyo, which would be much more prestigious anyway.

I know it’s probably way to early to ask, but do you guys like the live blog and articles we’ve published about  2019 Pan American Games on our website? Is there anything you’d like to see more of, less of? Any specific information you want (within reason)?

I enjoyed the live blog. It was nice to know what happened today since I was at work.

Even though the women's volleyball competition will happen after the Olympic qualifiers, Brazil is sending a different team here, mostly with young players.

I was sure a couple months ago that Peru would win a medal but not anymore. Even teams like Colombia seem to have a better level.

It's nice that a woman is a flagbearer, but when are we going to see a black woman carrying the Brazilian flag across the stadium? All of the women who have been selected at the Olympics were white, and now for the Pan Ams, another white woman.

I don't think it's entirely fair to call her "another white woman" when she's the first one to be our flag bearer in 18 editions of the Pan American Games (+ an Olympic champion!). Also, Sandra Pires was clearly selected as Olympic flag bearer in 2000 for winning our first gold medal among women, while Yane Marques in 2016 was an odd choice, but kinda understandable when many others where competing in the first days (including, for instance, Sarah Menezes). If a black woman deserved to be chosen at the Rio Olympics, that was Fabiana, but unfortunately I think Volleyball started at the day after the ceremony. I hope she's considered for 2020 if she plays next year (but, again, not likely since it's a team sport with competition starting Saturday).

For Lima, I was wishing for Isaquias to be our flag bearer, but I think he might be selected for Tokyo...

First time ever a woman will be our flag bearer at the Pan American Games. A nice link to her father (also Olympic champion) Torben Grael, who was our flag bearer in 1995.

I didn’t even see his name on there, where did you see that he won’t go

Brazilian site asked his agent, who said he will focus on World Championships. It's not a great loss since he would only compete in the relay, but the organizing committee must be pissed.

Even though he's on the list (and would be one of the biggest stars in the Games), Justin Gatlin won't go to Lima anymore. Don't think he'll be replaced, so that makes 642 athletes for USA.

As long as they're not as cheap as those from Guadalajara

Nothing surpasses the Rio 2007 "plastic" medals, that looked (and probably were) quite cheap.

Medal design should be unveiled tomorrow, but I already saw some images around the web - which the organizing committee asked to be deleted since "this design is not complete".

It seems Bolivia wants to medal in another sport besides Racquetball (they will be favorites for gold in men's events) as Hugo Dellien will also enter the tennis tournament.

Yes, they accepted every possible quota. I think Bolivia wants to be seen as a "sports nation", especially after the success of hosting the South American Games - and their plans of maybe being hosts of the 2027 Pan American Games.
