:ESA and :NCA you can add Surfing.

I would love to see it, have you done it for all nations?

I only did it for the unqualified nations. It would have taken a much longer time than it already did to complete, especially when you consider many of the already qualified nations have many chances to qualify.

Which unqualified nations are you interested in seeing?

I've updated the first post with the potential sports each nation may qualify in. I went through each event and wrote down which unqualified nations have a chance at qualifying (including wild cards/tripartites). This information is based on recent events and world rankings so as we get closer to the games and more athletes compete or nations fail to qualify in a sport I will continue to update the list. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. Just remember, unlikely is okay, but not impossible.

For Belarus and Russia I worked under the impression that they will return tomorrow (even though that's quite unlikely), but at the same time for other nations I worked under the impression that they will be fully banned. I am working under the similar ideals for North Korea for when/if they return.

As we still have many middle size nations, I've only listed the sports to save space. If you want a full breakdown of a nation let me know and I can reply. I'll probably update the first post with events once most of those nations qualify. Here's the top 10 nations with the most events I gave them a chance at qualifying in.

1. :RUS Russia - 236

2. :HUN Hungary - 138

3. :MEX Mexico - 125

4. :KAZ Kazakhstan - 123

5. :ARG Argentina - 110

6. :AUT Austria - 97

7. :POR Portugal - 96

8. :BLR Belarus - 86

9. :FIN Finland - 79

9. :ROU Romania - 79

Unsurprising, the currently suspended Russia tops the list. If they were to be allowed back in tomorrow, there's really only a handful of events that they would have no chance at qualifying (mostly team sports), but would qualify at a normal games. That number will start to drop quite quickly in 2023 as they (and Belarus) continue to miss key qualifying events and ranking points.

Hungary as number two is also not surprising, as besides the suspended Russia, they won the most medals in 2020 and had one of the largest teams out of the unqualified nations. After that you have the major continental powerhouses which benefit from continental quotas while also being a present at world qualifiers and then you have the remaining mid-sized European nations (Slovenia is 11th).

Athletics standards have become absurd at this point. People here have seriously joked, that these marks are the sane ones which would bring medals in Paris for most of the events.

If it were up to World Athletics they would rather have athletes qualify through the rankings only. Not fair either.

Looks like the Cross-Country rankings will give quotas to the 10,000m.

Also the marathon qualification has begun since Nov 1st, the following athletes have met the standard already (I'll only list a max of three athletes per nation, only applied to Ethiopia and Kenya). Unsurprisingly, a bunch of nations have qualified their first athletes

That seems like a pretty important step for the long term survival of artistic swimming as an Olympic sport given agenda 2020 tbh. Wouldn‘t be surprised if in a decade or two it becomes a 50/50 split.

Yeah, artistic swimming/FINA has seen the writing on the wall for a long time. While everything is now balance in terms of total athletes there are still imbalances within sports with football, Greco-Roman wrestling and water polo having more men and artistic swimming and rhythmic gymnastics having more women.

The push for equality in the men's events has slowly created a counter push for equality in the women's events which now holds more ground given the equal overall athlete quotas. Any reduction of men's quotas (or increase of women's quotas) will have to be met with a counter response on the women's side.

Artistic swimming has done a lot of work in preparation for when the IOC drops the hammer. If the IOC ever decides to grant women's water polo the extra 22 quotas, I expect to see artistic swimming flip to mixed duets and teams (with teams of 6/7 women and 2/1 men).

Rhythmic gymnastics on the other hand has done nothing, maybe they expect football to always be imbalanced?

There's also the strong rumour that up to 2 men will be allowed per team in Paris.

The FINA rules have been changed to allow this but not yet the Olympic qualification rules.

But that could still change

That would ruin the 50/50 gender split for the Olympics so I think it will be unlikely unless they compensate it elsewhere.

Not too many more opportunities for new nations to qualify prior to the end of this year. We are down to four more direct qualifying events.

World Artistic Gymnastics Championships - Very unlikely to qualify a new nation, the best chances IMO would be Turkiye in the men and Canada in the women, but again it's very unlikely.

European Women's Handball Championship - Again unlikely with the best chances going to Hungary or Montenegro.

Shooting Championship of the Americas - We could see a few nations qualify. The United States will eat a lot of the quotas (assuming they are sending a relatively strong team), but I suspect we will see Cuba and/or Mexico qualify their first athletes. There are a few other individuals (Argentina, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Peru, Puerto Rico) which could also qualify.

Urban Cycling World Championship - This is for BMX Park. This event despite occurring first is of a lower priority, but until the Olympic Qualifier Series is completed the quotas will likely be awarded to an already qualified nation. Perhaps Argentina, Costa Rica or Croatia might surprise.

Looks like they figured out three teams from Oceania could finish in the top 4 at the women's world series so they made a similar rule as the North American qualifier and thus they won't allow a free quota to Papua New Guinea or Samoa.

I see that the modern pentathlon is still going at it with their phantom universality spots. We know they are going to be left unclaimed.

One day a tripartite nation will put in an application and then UIPM will be stuck. Off the top of my head, I remember someone from :BUR competing. Also, while they won't be a tripartite nation in 2024, :BOL would be an option in 2028 should they send a small team again (and if modern pentathlon still exists).

Not sure if this was the change, but the universality quota banning athletes under the age of 30 from attending a third Olympics caught my eye. While I understand not wanting a single low ranking athlete dominate a swimming quota for multiple Olympics, but why lift the rule once the athlete turns 30? At that point the rule only affects a small handful of athletes in their mid to late 20s.

Regardless, it's a dumb rule to have.

One wonders if it is really that necessary to have extreme kayak spread out over three days? Having a separate day for heats is just hilarious.

The event is too EXTREME!!!! The athletes obviously can't handle that much extremeness on a shorter schedule :p
