  1. Having a speed bump in the final 100-200m seems like an idiotic choice.
  2. The medal table race will likely be more interesting in light of the withdrawals/no-shows. will need to do very well in judo/wrestling and the arts to leave themselves with any hope of a high finish. might be able to top the medal table if they’re able to capitalize on the absence of most of the other powerhouses in athletics, cycling, and table tennis. could also be a challenger for top spot on the medal table if they repeat their performance from six years ago. Still waiting on confirmation of entires in a few sports. If competitions are live-streamed somewhere, I’ll probably follow along. I like the concept of these Games, even if their future is uncertain.
  3. withdrew their entire team from the Games. also appear to be absent even though they indicated an interest in participating during the entries phase.
  4. My assumption is that our university sports federation was unable to find an interested (or suitable) team. They put out an open call in May: https://usateam.org/news/2023/5/15/2023-chengdu-be-the-usa-womens-basketball-national-team-to-compete-at-world-university-games-in-china.aspx
  5. More on today’s incident between Kharlan and Smirnova: https://www.bbc.com/sport/fencing/66322668
  6. No, I assume draws for the other team sports (kabaddi, basketball, hockey, etc.) will be made at a later date.
  7. Team sport draws: https://ocasia.org/news/4170-draw-for-four-asian-games-team-sports-takes-place-in-hangzhou.html
  8. The IOC has refused to recognize the recent OCA elections, and its Ethics Commission intends to open an investigation. It will be interesting to see how the relationship between the two organizations develops.
  9. Panam Sports Channel will broadcast the Games internationally.
  10. Men’s football has also met a similar fate to women’s basketball all withdrew or failed to send a team. was allowed to enter team, so groups were redrawn/amended with nine countries entered into the competition.
  11. Entry list for women’s basketball has really taken a nosedive. all withdrew or failed to send a team. Pools had to be redrawn/amended. Chad was also allowed to enter a team even though weren’t originally allocated one. took a walkover loss today. Hopefully they show up for the next two games, but I fear another team has been lost.
  12. They also withdrew from women’s basketball, but will send athletes in judo and wrestling.
  13. Good battle between and for gold in women’s skateboarding (street). comes out on top in the end. Overall, the level of the competition was good, but nothing too crazy. Europe still has some work to do to catch up to North America, Latin America, and East Asia.
  14. get away with a clear foul on Horan, but she ultimately gets the last laugh with a brilliant equalizer
  15. strikes first and early. defense showing some weakness there.
  16. A young cyclist from passed away after crashing on a decent during a race in Austria. Link: https://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/38051953/cyclist-jacopo-venzo-17-dies-crash-austria-race
  17. Yara Kastelijn is having a great tour. Phenomenal solo breakaway win for her today Vollering continued the proud tradition of Dutch women celebrating second place finishes as well
  18. I think that is still unclear. North Korea is no longer suspended as far as I know, but their intentions regarding participation remain unknown. Guatemala remains suspended. They will not receive an invitation, but their athletes will surely be allowed to compete (likely under the Olympic flag) should they qualify. In theory, I believe there is still time for Guatemala to get the suspension lifted, but it seems unlikely at the moment.
  19. These are kind of things that really upset me concerning national federations. Their job, at base level, is to support the participation of their athletes. If someone met the standard/ranked high enough, every effort* should be made to make sure they can go to the world championships. *I can understand financial hardship, but that definitely isn’t the problem in this case.
  20. Just don’t respond “no, thank you” to those invites if you don’t want to be banned for two years
