I am so impressed with the Indian standards in athletics recently ................ . going by the Asian games standards of 2014 ( if we take the scores over the last few months especially the recent federation cup ) we seem to be at the medal contention level in all the male events except decathlon / pole vault / high jump / 110 m hurdles we seem to be at the medal contention level in all female events except 100mh and pole vault so if you look at it in 41 of the 47 athletic events we seem to be at a medal contention level ................. and going by the timings in 19 of the women events and 13 of the men events we would have won medals which is really huge ( in the remaining 9 events out of the 41 we would have been at 4/5/6 positions ) .................. If I see the situation even 3 years ago we would have been in medal contention in about 20 of the events ending up with 13 medals at the Asian games ... with the current standards we could hope to almost surely double the medals another highlight is the abundant junior talent ........ beant singh ( he is world number one at under 18 ) and neeraj chopra ( he is world number 1 at under 20 ) and lili das are at world class levels currently .... Duttee is just out of juniors
-
Indian hopes would lie with Beant singh had already made the timing in the fed senior cup and he is the asian champion she is world no 10 in this years 800 m juniors ...also neeraj chopra is the most likely to podium qualification standard 68 m - his length 82+ consistently and he is world no amongst juniors ... he is most probably going to be Indias first gold medal in any world championship at any level in athletics ... third most likely to medal would be lili das she is at 9th position for this years 1500 ... I am hoping for 3 finalists for the first time ever Duttee is not eligible and is no longer considered a junior ( she is born 1996 and the event is open for athletes born in 1997 ) ......she is truly an awesome talent as she can shave at least .2 to .3 as she moves into the senior ........... short distance runners reach their prime at 24-28 years ..............
-
definitely a finalist in vault ................. difficult to be a medalist in vault ....but surely going to be up there .................so a matter for all of us to be very proud

As I have been following weightlifting ......only Mirabai is world class she has improved recently under Kunjaranis coaching ....I feel without a doubt 2-5 Kg improvement is possible ....... she shoudl be counted as a reasonable medal prospect in rio ....I do not see any one else even close barring sanjita chanu but chanu is far from the medal prospects .... The only other possible top 10 weightlifter is Punam ....... but Mirabai stands alone .......... She is lifting 190 ......... There are two chiness who are lifting 205 or so but china will nominate only 1 ....... so the chinese lifter barring a miracle or injury will be first ............ then Miyake whose season best was 193 ( but has a PB of 200 ) she would be the second seed ( but she is not in great form and can be overtaken provided ......then there is vuang ( VIE ) who is alternating between 194 and 188 .. Then there is Ri ( PRK ) with a season best of 191 who again can be overtaken ....then there is Khamsri of THA... so with a couple of Kgs increase she can be in the medals..... so barring the first position which seems reserved for the chinese she is in a group who can compete for the medals ...... .......... In men there are more probables ...In order I feel given recent performances it is likely to be Vikas Thakur .......alternatively only Sathish is possible ...next would deru jamjang ... I think they can have a lift off between these three and possible Venkata Ragala ( who is well behind Vikas currently in 85- weight category ) and see who does the best I think the weightlifting qualifications have closed for effectively for us so we will have exactly 1 + 1 weightlifters in the olympics ..................In women it would be Mirabai and for men one of the above three ..........
-
I believe there is good chance as their score was very good at the Asian games ...they need to do not too much to qualify ,..... with scores by anilda in the recent fed games I believe they can do it ..............
-
Definitely 15 according to me ............ wikipedia shows 11 as of now ( including badminton ) ,,,,,, in addition surely golf , tennis almost surely judo and swimming .... most other sports are closed .....we are still in the race for beach volleyball but almost no chances .................. other than this wild card possibility is sailing ...i am not sure if the wild cards have been assigned ???...so 15 almost surely ............. if wildly lucky one more .......the highest qualification in terms of sports was 14 at the 2004 ( athens ) games ....we will surely beat that here I feel
-
good news for swimmers ...they need support ....will definitely buy speedo !!
-
Indians doing well after day 2 at the Junior World Cup shooting at Suhl India is currently in first place 3 gold , 2 silver and 1 bronze - 6 medals ..............
-
can we also add the ISSF junior world cup at Suhl as a non rio event ...... it gives a good idea about junior shooting talent ......PS India is leading after day 1 with 3 gold and 1 bronze
-
Prashanth ...That list which you have prepared was great .................................possibly it would be nice if you could update the people I had outlined and Suriya outlined by Sanjib .... I think if nothing else it would give us a comprehensive list of high performing athletes we could track not just for the Olympics but later on in the Asian games .....as they are all capable of medalling for example Jinsons score in the 800m is higher than the silver medal score at the 2014 Asian games , tejinders throw is very close to the Asian games gold medal score of 19.97 .......... I actually feel that Indian athletics is showing tremendous progress in the breath and depth of all disciplines so your list of olympic qualifiers and close to qualifiers would be an authoritative list for tracking first for the quota and to also see the breath of change in the last couple of years
-
Thanks buddy ....... but I see you have not updated a few so I would like to have your thoughts on them ....... of them I feel Basant Rana should be included in the probable quota for the 50 Km walk as he is just a 1 minute behind in a 4 hr event ............... also I see you have not added durgesh in the 400 and Jinson and two others in the 800 would love to hear your thoughts on them as well .................. Rajinder / tejinder
-
thanks for the thorough job .................... Important week for India in athletics and wrestling
-
great job by our recurve team........ hope our men carry the form into the qualification
-
Actually I think that India will have a good chance to qualify one judoka................ because in the continental quota - the rule is - continental quotas (Europe 25, Africa 24, Pan America 21, Asia 20 and Oceania 10 across both sexes and all divisions) are also subjected to an overall limit to one judoka per NOC ...i.e the Top 20 countries in Asia will send one judoka each under the continental category ( This will I think exclude nations like Japan / Korea/North Korea who will already 7 men / 7 women hence subject to the maximum rule in the top 22/15 ) ,,,, the process is extremely opaque and difficult to identify who will be selected but I think we will have one judoka .......
-
gv could we now update this for this week ...... I think may7th is the Indian grand prix and also the finalisation of badminton quotas is 5th May
-
Thanks for the update a lot of work has gone it ...I would like to compare it with the Information I have ....... I think we should add the following as well additions qualification for 50 km walk is 4:06;00 ... I think we should add these two as possible qualifiers Basant Bahadur Rana 4:07:25 Jaipur (IND) 28.02.2016 Chandan Singh 4:09:51 Jaipur (IND) 28.02.20 mens 400m Mohd Anas 45.75..... 0.35 seconds behind mens 400,mh durgesh50.37 - 0.87 seconds behind Mens 800 m jinson johnson - 1:47.56 , ........ .... as the qualification for 800 m is 1.46...... so he is 1.56 seconds behind not a huge time difference in the 800m , lalit mathur 1.47.90..................... 1.90 seonds behnd and sajeesh 1.47.96 which is 1.96 seconds behind also add rajender singh 82.23 in the javelin in 2015 to the javelin group as a possible qualifier ( he did it in mid april las year which may be on the outskirts of the qualification cycle but we can add him as a prospect ) women discus - seema antil 58.86m recently with the qualification at 61.00 ................. she is 2.14 m behind but well within her grasp mens shot - tejinder singh 19.93 in the shot which is .57 behind the qualification of 20.50 womens long jump - prajusha - 6.30 with the qualification at 6.70 which is .4 behind mens 5000m 13.36 by lakshmanan govindhan at wuhan 13.25 is the olympic qualification ...so 11 seconds behind modifications for triple jump women road to rio has mayookha johny at 14,09 at South africa 22.04.16 - but I cannot find this at top lists ??? - not sure for 200m srabani was faster than duttee so the scores shoudl be reversed it is awesome to see this list once updated we seem to have temendous talent at this point of time in Indian atheletics
-
@gvaisakh @Prashanth @Dolby @Suneet @kapil857 I remember someone posting likely qualification in athletics earlier ........ do not remember who ....If after the fed cup that list is updated it would a useful list to consider how many qualification chances we may have left in athletics ...................
-
yes but currently we are 17th in the list of 4*400 m ...................we need to do another 3:29 as the average of best 2 is considered and I feel it is possible ...............
-
The one squad which I feel can make the olympics is the womens 4*400 squad with the recent performances being good in the 400 m ...I feel the squad of Juana / anilda / poovama and possibly tintu can easily hit 3:29 which will take them to Rio................... The others improvement based on the recent scores and we will need to see what is the best that they can do

Final update from the asian olympic qualification in weightlifting Women's - India finished 3rd ( top 6 get 1 quota ) pipped by one point in the last event by Uzbekistan , Vietnam finished 1st as expected .........As discussed the quota was definate and confirmed ............. The scores by the women in the higher weights were disappointing, to say the least ( to give you a feel Sushila panwar in +75 kgs lifted the same wieght as mirakhom in the 48kg - 190 kg ) ....... But on the positive side mirakhoms lift of 190 total would have put her 5th in the world championships and possibly 4th in the olympics ...... she is a distinct medal prospect and under kunjaranis tutelage would I am sure be definite medal prospect in the womens 48 at Rio and I am sure she would be the weightlifter nominated ................ In the long term looking at womens weightlifting there was no new 4th weightlifter standing out ....... so India for tokyo needs to build a couple of new weightlifters or wait for drug tainted krisani and mitali to get back to get our 6 member squad in place ............. Men's - India finished 6th ( top 7 get one quota ) ..closed the one quota finally ..still close to the first 7 mark not be complacent ....but on the positive side they seems to have a series of young weifghtlifters who could form the nucleus of the squad for the next cycle- Venkat Ragala with a strong 316 in the 85 kg was great , Sambo and jeru ( from Arunachal ) are both juniors and 2-3 years should be there along with seniors like Vikas and Sathish .... Vikas Thakurs performance was good and most possibly he may be our one quota for Rio ( he would probably finish in the 12-15 range there ) so not much can be expected of him ...............
-
i feel there may not have adequate practice ...possibly we may see better scores at the grand prix in patiala
-
what a federation cup ....... I know we did not see any qualifications ( other than sudha ) but so many National records being broken was phenomenal ( mens 100 , womens 100 , mens 400 and 3000 steeple for women ) .........also in Indian athletics the lower sprints 100, 200, 400, 800 in men has been weak for the last 15 years or so and sprints in women 100,200 and hence the relays have been weak , mens 100, 400 and womens 100 ........................... but with the kind of scores we are seeing I think we may have qualifiers but also see an effect in the Asian games ...................... that is 9 events so really significant ........................... I was looking at the Asian games 2014 with the kind of scores we had here we would at least 5 more athletic medals................ I am sure in the may 1st week games ( iNDIAN GRAND PRIX ) we may have definitely a few qualifications
-
We would not be able to see Ms khadija ( the UAE weightlifter who said you do not need strength but only your mind to be in the Olympics )
