  1. I think you are underestimating them because they are among the best from the continent. Besides if you say they were "lucky" then what's stopping them from being "lucky" again? Again, I'm not saying they are favoured to win a medal, but to say they have single digit percent chance of qualifying as the 25th-29th best athlete is wrong. Especially in a sport like shooting.
  2. I didn't say they were top 15, just that once you are outside of the top 15 you aren't guaranteed a spot in a 29(+double starters) athlete field. It's also unfair to use the 102, especially since he got 118 here, more than enough to qualify in an international competition. Of course comparing two different events is bad for shotgun events as weather plays a big factor. Pan America may be weaker than Asia and Europe in shooting, but we aren't so weak that our best shooters wouldn't qualify to the Olympics without continental quotas, especially since none of the World Cup events have occurred so outside of the 4 USA quotas won at the World Championships we are more or less at full strength. Now quotas won at the Pan American Games may be a different story, but the Olympics does want universality.
  3. Not everyone can afford to go to Europe/Asia to compete. If you look at their performances here, it's consistent with what you'd expect a top 30 athlete would get. Is there a chance that they would miss out in a non-continental qualification system? Perhaps, but you could say the same about anyone who isn't consistently in the top 15.
  4. To be fair these athletes would have all been able to qualify if continental quotas didn't exist. There are 29 quota places for each event...
  5. Did anyone hear that Guatemala got the Olympic quota? Very good performance by Ruano, after the men's trap team all failed to reach the finals.
  6. Yes they will be eligible to compete in the event.
  7. Nations Qualified to Men's Trap final The United States' Walton Eller specializes in double trap, he was the 2008 Olympic gold medalist.
  8. Yeah, the United States could qualify through the World Cup events, so if Guatemala or Mexico can get even one of the quotas it would be helpful for the rest of the continent.
  9. Didn't think Canada would win the quota so early, good for her. Hopefully USA and Mexico can qualify during the World Cup events.
  10. Unsurprisingly that the US is doing well.
  11. Advance to Women's 10m Air Pistol Finals Very good performance by Ecuador. Unless athletes qualify through the World Cup events, this one is going to be very competitive at the Pan American Games
  12. Ecuador is currently leading the women's 10m air pistol qualification. She won silver at the 2018 South American Games This event along with women's trap will be Canada's best chance at qualifying a quota normally.
  13. Should have developed women's finn (or an equivalent women's only event)
  14. A much better choice. Which boat will be used?
  15. Yeah, usually I hope for the US to choke at this tournament so they can win their quotas at the World Cups, but I feel if they lose here, they'll just take the Pan American Games quotas too. Hopefully they, Mexico, Cuba and Guatemala steal a few quotas at the World Cup so the rest of the continent can qualify.
  16. And then the pressure cracked him I must be bad luck when watching...
  17. After a slow start Guatemala has caught up to the lead The nation has done well in this sport, at worst they are top 4 in this continent.
  18. Yes, the following nations won quotas for the 2019 Pan American Games Men's 10m Air Pistol x2 x2 x2 x2 x2 x2
  19. With the exception of Cuba flopping, nothing too crazy for the men's air pistol.
  20. Peru is doing well, currently they have two athletes in the top 8. And as soon as I say this one of them drops off
  21. Relatively poor start for the Cubans, let's see if they can catch-up
  22. They will because the assumption is that the suspension will be temporarily. AIBA can take a hardline approach and at the very least would cause the Olympic tournament to be very diluted.
  23. A professional boxing tournament without letting amateurs at least attempt to qualify is no good either. Also, if AIBA really wants to play hardball there won't be any recognized national federations either (as they risk being sanctioned by AIBA), though I guess they could go the route of having all the boxers compete under the Olympic flag, but I imagine some young boxers may also not want to risk getting banned from future competitions.
  24. Skateboarding (and surfing) are not widely developed so it isn't surprising that the sports struggle to get diversity, even concentrated to one continent diversity.
  25. The quota goes to the highest ranked athlete that has yet to qualify a quota. The athlete must also reach the MQS during the qualification round. Overall the United States should claim the most quotas, though Cuba and Mexico could pick up a couple too. Other nations will have chances too.
