  1. We are off with the climbing. Probably doomed group 8 minutes up - George Bennett the only one with a chance of holding out. Hadn’t realised, or my brain hadn’t processed, but Bernal is still young enough to be in the White Jersey competition. Hmm. Some gaps developing on the descent from the first climb. Bernal & Vlasov in the good place, everyone else having to work hard to get back.
  2. His real expertise was excuses. Certainly “beer & sex with my wife” is in the all-time top 10. (No. 1 - Raimondas Rumšas - “they’re for my mother-in-law.”
  3. She is getting the big hype treatment for sure at the moment - profiles today in the Daily Mail & on the BBC.
  4. Russian athletes permitted to compete as neutrals in 2021 https://worldathletics.org/news/press-releases/authorised-neutral-athletes-22-may-2021
  5. So many tempting choices. But I can foresee skateboarding as being particularly annoying, so I’ve got to go with that.
  6. You guys are watching the Eurovision rehearsals? Wow, hardcore!!! And I used to think I was dedicated for watching it once!
  7. Two unusual things happened today 1.) Dead men rose from their graves & walked. 2.) Giacomo Nizzolo won a sprint in the Giro.
  8. Every bit as exciting as billed. Breakaway is in sight, peloton is formed up in serried ranks, historic monuments are getting lavish coverage. 28k to go. Big news of the day so far: Riders are now allowed to throw their empty bidons to fans at the side of the road. Will revolutionise the sport.
  9. It’s a double bill on Sunday night with the Gateshead DL (other thread) and then 30 minutes later the Boston World Continental Gold meet on YouTube. It’s street racing, but many big names. https://www.worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-continental-tour/news/adidas-boost-boston-games-lyles-niekerk-mille
  10. We have the programme for Gateshead on Sunday. TV coverage begins at 19:00 local. Weather likely to be (looks out of the window) cold, rainy, windy & wet, so would be a great alternative for Eugene, less so for Rabaat. https://gateshead.diamondleague.com/list-results/ General preview. https://www.worldathletics.org/competitions/diamond-league/news/wanda-diamond-league-gateshead-2021
  11. As a political movement, pan-Slavism died in 1917. Eurovision has revived it!
  12. Is the Bangladesh Archery Programme independent, or is it like the Moldovan Biathlon team? That is, does it benefit from Bengali competitors who don’t quite make the Indian team?
  13. British sea-lions showing superb ball-balancing skills there.
  14. Planning a career in showbiz? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Werner_Herzog_Eats_His_Shoe
  15. Standards of rain-jacket deployment in the peloton are continuing to regress. Looking like one of those neutralised mountain days so far. Break is going to provide the winner, peloton getting off their bikes to pick mushrooms.
  16. Will always have a job in Vegas once the sporting career is done.
  17. Bednarek? That’s a Czech name, surely?
  18. Lordy, are those Sha’Carri Richardson’s real nails? Obviously not planning a job as a violinist.
  19. Vetter 94.20 in Zeleznograd!
  20. She’s having a baby year, actually. Will be concentrating on her pace-making career come 2022, I think.
  21. Women’s 800m running just super hot right now, EJR for Keeley Hodgkinson. 800m guys must be kicking themselves, only Burgin goes with the pace, gets the win, WL & OQ.
  22. And ditto for the women’s 1500m. Bad day for Genzebe Dibaba. Ethiopian trials will be coming soon.
  23. Pretty impressive 9.96 from Fred Kerley on a chilly afternoon. Europeans all well short of OQs.
  24. Link is here, for those of us not in the lands of beer & dumplings but few vowels. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3db43A6Qnsw
  25. What’s funny is that two guys at the front have immaculate clean shirts, everyone else looks like they have been mining coal. Evenepoel struggling on the climbs now, as well as the gravel. Over two minutes to Bernal now. Bernal now on a solo attack, everyone else suffering. Schmid gets a debut-year win.
