  1. They are strictly better than not having a host. I think it’s pretty clear that combining the freestyle and snowboarding worlds wasn’t such a great idea. Other than Park City in 2019 all the hosts have been from meh to WTF.
  2. TBH on a personal level I fully support Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes who switch to represent Qatar, Bahrein or whatever other country. It’s just a much better option for them financially.
  3. This is a terible, no good rule that might as well refer to Semenya by name and only apply to her. On what planet is a high testosterone level only advantageous from the 400m to the mile? Oh, ya, that’s Semenya’s known range of distances. What a joke. And I say that as someone who doesn’t think Semenya should be allowed to compete at her current level of testosterone.
  4. Isn’t there always a bunch of confusion over how qualification actually works for Canoeing? I feel like the Wikipedia page always ends up having a couple errors.
  5. Christine Girard is now officially the Olympic gold medalist from the London 2012 -63kg Weightlifting event.
  6. I mean, I don’t mind either (bias and all ) and it’s not like Canadian eventers or dressage riders get humiliated on the world stage. Just seems like a lot of teams which leads to a very, shall we say, kind qualification standard in the Americas. Especially if the US qualifies from WEG.
  7. I mean, there wasn’t really all that much contentious by then. Also congrats to Equestrians Canada (or whatever the EF is called) on lobbying it’s way to free a full team.
  8. Worth remembering that Lori Fung was, and I’m being generous here, extremely lucky to win her Olympic gold medal. It isn’t indicative of Canada’s strenght (or lack therof) in rhythmic gymnastic. I agree with you though, and I think trampoline (including double mini and tumbling) should replace rhythmic on the program.
  9. Don’t really care about the medal table at the Commonwealth, especially considering how much the program changes year by year. I mostly care about it as a good test in a select few sports where the Commonwealth as a whole is competitive (diving, swimming, triathlon and track cycling come to mind) and as a fun side event otherwise.
  10. Am I ever glad her parents never bothered to make her a naturalized American citizen...
  11. Sure looks like the 2017 Worlds will be a good preview of the kind of competition we can expect...
  12. Team Edin had their Swedish Olympic Comitee funding cut to zero. This is apparently part of a large cutbacks to the funding of Swedish winter sports.
  13. The issues with Qatar are directly linked to the World Cup itself. The Japanese whale hunt, while a travesty, are very much ubrelated to the Olympics.
  14. Apparently they want advice from the IOC. But given the ceremonies would be in Milan I guess it would have to be branded as such. I actually think this is a very agenda 2020 friendly bid concept and I kinda like it.
  15. Because surely there is no way China will win in 2022... ...oh.
  16. She got to worlds by winning a one and done tournament, too. I don’t think the problem at the Olympics was selection, both the teams that won the trials would have had a great chance at being selected if the selection was done by commitee or ranking. Koe was the 2016 world champion and the 2017 Canadian championship runner-up (losing to a Gushue team that was playing at home), Homan had gone undefeated in the 2017 worlds.
  17. I think Baseball would be deserving of 12 spots if the MLB sent it’s best players. Until then, it’s a hard no for me. Also, keep in mind baseball teams are the biggest teams in the Summer Olympics, and the second biggest teams in the Olympics period (only men’s hockey has bigger teams, and by one athlete) at 24.
  18. Exactly. Not many people skip out on the post Olympic worlds unless they have an injury or plan to retire.
  19. Figure skaters don’t compete a lot as is. Might as well give everyone another shot at a meaningful competition before the season ends.
  20. Kostner was lucky to have fourth tbh. Her PCS was Patrick Chan in the early 2010s levels of generous. I really wish she would have finished her career at home on a high note, but she just didn’t deserve a medal with that skate. I’m having a hard time processing Osmond is a world champion. Incredibly happy for her. Canada hasn’t had a women’s workd champion in ages. Hard to process that men’s is out weakest discipline right now (and the one with the longest “drought” at both the worlds and the Olympics). Daleman is now the only member of Canada’s gold medal team event to not have an individual Olympic medal *and* a world championship gold. No presure on her or anything.
  21. I actually think Kata is a more interesting addition than Kumite because it’s much more unique at the Olympics. Kumite just looks very samey. I would be quite happy to give up Kumite for a team Kata event.
  22. Glad he finally got the last major title that was missing from his resume. He's definitively one of the greats. I'd say this is a great way to end his career, but he decided to postpone retirement.
  23. I don’t mean this farce of a world cup finale specifically, I mean in general.
