Alright we’ve bought our tickets, booked our Airbnb, and now our booked our flights. The trip is all but happening. I have a few questions that if people could answer that’d be great. First and foremost, we are going to have a layover at Vienna International Airport, so if we’re going to have one night in Vienna what is the best way to spend it (also what’s the drinking age?)? Also, for people who’ve been to the Olympics, what should we expect? What are some neat things to do at the venues or public watch areas? Also, just general information about people’s Olympic experiences for games they’ve attended would be fantastic. We’ve been planning this trip for a few years now, and I want it to be special, so it’d be ultra hopeful to get some different users advice and opinions. Thanks
Thinking back to London 2012 there was a fantastic atmosphere all around. Particularly at the public screens so it would be worth finding out where they are. Also don’t forget the free events! Just make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get to the venues by public transport and get through ticket gates and security, can take longer than you think and you don’t want to miss anything!

Best - Rio 2016 becoming the first nation ever to win more medals at the subsequent games than at their home games! And beating China to second place on the medals table.
Worst - Atlanta 1996 we won just 1 gold medal, but it turned out to be exactly what we needed! The government and national lottery decided to invest in elite sport to ensure such a humiliation never happened again and it's only got better ever since!

I don't think it was harsh at all. With this result fixing, consequently they could have shared available prize money and/or ranking points.
And that just comes on top of making a mockery of competition and being disrespectful to other racers.
It was a British selection event! I believe they would both have been selected so that’s why they may have been jointly celebrating!

The National sport of England is Cricket, but I would also put football up there too!
My county, West Sussex, has an official sport though, it’s called Stoolball. It’s basically a cross over between cricket, baseball and rounders and is very popular in villages and schools across the county.

Congratulations, GB is starting to pull away from Germany, also some very surprising athletes on that list, for example Amy Hunt.
Who do you see as main candidates in the field events? Lake (high jump), Proctor (long jump), Hitchon (hammer throw), Gale (high jump), Duckworth (decathlon) ... someone else?
I have a hard time imagining that GB will have more than 6-8 athletes with the standard in field events, which is quite surprising for such a big nation. Germany on the other hand is doing fine in field events (In the end it should be over 30 athletes with the standard there) and in track events on the women's side (probably 10-15 woman should achieve the standard in their respective events), but they will have trouble in the track events on the men's side, i don't see more than 4-6 guys with the standard there.
You're definitely right about GBs lack of strength in the field events. I agree with most of your picks but there are a few other candidates:
Ugen and Sawyers (W Long Jump), Bramble (M Long Jump), Baker (M High Jump), Ogbeta (W Triple Jump), McKinna (W Shot Put), Emerson (Heptathlon).

Overall it was a big month for Great Britain whom gained 9 athletes
The next few weeks should be really good for us too with the London Anniversary Games, British Championships and Birmingham Diamond League. Hopefully we can start to qualify in the field events where we’ve only got 3 athletes qualified across all the events at the moment

So, according to the Samoan government, the brand new Multi-Sports Complex (which will host the majority of the sports at the games) was founded and built by the People’s Republic of China. Apparently they got tired of building new Olympic Parks in every major city in China, so now they’re exporting them
. Although If I had to guess the PRC offered to build the complex of a token of gratitude for Samoa recognizing them over ROC.
You're absolutely right! And guess who is building the main venues for the Solomon Islands Pacific Games in 2023, Taiwan! Because Solomon Islands still recognises ROC! The whole thing is called 'Stadium Diplomacy' and China and Taiwan are building stadiums across the developing world because of it. There was a funny story in Grenada where the contract for building the stadium was literally swapped from Taiwan to China halfway through construction because the government swapped their allegiances!

Great Britain have been set a target of winning 68 medals in Tokyo, bettering the Rio 2016 total of 67. Whilst it is unlikely that Britain will maintain their second position in the medal table, it is possible for Britain to better their medal count from Rio. I was surprised when my individual calculations came back with an average of 72 medals, however what is always important to remember when talking about GB's medal prospects is that everything builds up to one moment. We saw in PyeongChang how Britain's top secret technology won 3 medals in Skeleton, despite limited form coming into the games. More summer sports have the engineering, research and design structures in place that set GB apart from the rest of the world at the Olympic Games, including Cycling, Rowing and Canoeing. I'm honestly not sure how it's gonna go, we will either shock the world and have another amazing games or return to more realistic Beijing medal standards (52), sparking a rethink in the whole elite performance sport sector.

These games really lost momentum throughout the week for me, and the forum too it seems. First few days were exciting with lots of events and generated much discussion on the thread. By the later stages there were only a few events per day and lots of similar sports, the thread also seemed to lose interest too. It will be interesting to see what happens in Krakow, hopefully a proper aquatics and athletics program will make the games more exciting.

Very confusing system. GB countries are acting like independent ones not only in sports but also in many other areas.
There are more and more differences now with devolved governments using their powers in innovative ways! For example university is free in Scotland, £3000 in Wales and £9000 in England a year! Since every sport also has a commonwealth level organisation for each nation, the 2 tier system already exists in many sports.
