Not surprising, he was one of the tennis players against the Olympics.

Is there a scandal I don’t know about?

I hardly think that a tennis player being all spoiled would qualify as a scandal. :p

Not really, he's just been on record saying that he doesn't care for the Olympics.

Honestly, with no cash prize or even ranking points plus the rule that forces them to compete multiple Davis/Fed Cup matches there isn't much of an appeal for some players.

If they really don't want to play, they can at the very least fake some injury or something a couple of weeks before the start. Withdrawing like this, more than a year ahead, is just disrespectful to all those athletes who sacrifice everything to get to the Olympics.

I disagree. Honesty wins a lot of points in my book and he's been quite honest: he does not care much for the Olympics and is not interested in going. Fine, better than pretending to want to go but fake some injury to get out of it. That is disrespectful.

Problem is that the Tournament in Kitzbühel is at the same time. And Thiem said, that he wants to play in Kitzbühel. And this is sort of understandable, it's the biggest Tournament in Austria after all. So faking an injury and then playing in Kitzbühel doesn't look very good either.

This is still like spitting on the food you never planned to eat. Calling Olympics swimming and athletics. Please.

I'm not saying I like it, just that I think it's better than lying your way out of it. That's like telling your girlfriend her food is delicious but then excusing yourself and vomiting it out in the toilet as soon as possible.

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.

Although the agenda has not been published yet, there shouldn’t be any major items over these two days, apart from the election of a member of the IOC Executive Board. • Weightlifting We now have six events per gender with a total of 10 athletes per event.   The Olympic Qualification Rankings will be based on the sum of the total results of five events (three from period 1 and two from period 2). The top 8 will qualify.   The 9th spot will also be based on the OQR, but it will go to the highest ranked athlete from an unrepresented continent.   The 10th spot will be split between the host and universality (3 each per gender). Should the United States qualify normally then their host quota will be reduced, first going to an athlete from an unrepresented continent then to the overall highest ranked athlete.   Additionally, a "Best Lifter" will be awarded which would give the nation the chance to qualify 4 athletes rather than the max of 3.
