Why do skiiers leave Beijing on saturday evening/sunday morning? The closing ceremony is on sunday evening, they should be there

Many athletes are already 3-4 weeks there and they want to be at home finally.

Athletes, coaches saying their disagreements on social media (as per our commentators) with Andrew Musgrave saying that the conditions are not that different, than what we had so far. Majority saying the race should have been postponed for tomorrow..

In an ideal Olympic World, I would agree.  But these guys have WC races in a week in Finland, and with Covid, and with all the restrictions they face in the closed-bubble, they just want to get out of China ASAP.

Kateřina Neumanová said in Czech TV that according rumors she got the last word about shortening the race  was made after discussion between FIS, organizers and IOC requested by a certain TV right holder company to avoid some important events collision...

Not sure how much it is believable though...

Anyway Koristek survived the first 5k. The longest he will be able to keep the lead group pace, it may be considered as a nice success

Could well see the person making the decision resigning very soon after the race.

Why was 50k shortened and delayed? Wind has big effect in biathlon, but not in cross country skiing

I mean it does though. It's the same as in cycling for example. The ones in front act as a shield to the ones in the peloton. The problem here is that the ones leading are almost always the favourites.

    • Yeah. It was pretty bad that they cancel the contract with the original creative director after 7 months of work. I feel like politics, in this particular context of the changing of prime minister and the cabinet, may had caused changes in organizational decisions regarding the Sea Games including the direction of the opening ceremony.
    • That's what I figured.  Wouldn't be a proper lead up to an Olympics without some media-fueled fearmongering.
    • Today : Jordan 3-0 Egypt  This team will surprise us
    • option no.2 for sure, as it's been all this shitstorm organized by the nhl owners through their embedded reporters   ps not that the north american audience looks really aware of the hockey rules and habits outside the nhl (and around their game, too, since they look not to know that just a couple of weeks ago they played 2 nhl matches on an ice sheet of the exact same size of Milan's olympic arena)
    • Are we supposed to take Daly's word for it or is this just public posturing to try and shame the Milan organizers (which they certainly deserve for all the delays) in order to threaten NHL participation?
    • Well that was a disappointing opening ceremony. Not to mention the boss is late too...   Anyway this is another victim of bureaucracy, the initial creative director quit in October and we get this kind of show.   Original plan: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/17EVayTpig/
    • Japan missed their last shot with hammer in the 10th last night against the Philippines for them to stay alive.  USA's remaining 2 games are against Philippines and Netherlands, so they have a tough road ahead, although they've already beaten Japan, so that helps for tiebreaker purposes.
