I think we are reaching a crucial point for the Games. It looks like the Diving World Cup in Tokyo is cancelled and the fourth wave is about to hit Japan as we are getting close to a "point of no return" with the Games, I doubt that they can cancel it if the countdown goes below 100 days. If there will be a cancellation, it's going to happen in the next few days/weeks.

With so many qualifiers being conducted in great difficulty, no question of cancelling the Olympics now. It's not that severe in tokyo this time. And yes safe to not have any qualifiers in Tokyo to increase cases. But Tokyo will still go ahead 99.9%

When the torch relay started, there's no turning back.  There won't be a cancellation.  Too many sports leagues around the world are operating right now, so if there was any notion to cancel the Olympics, the question would be why can't they do it when others can?

it's just about time, we will hear news about the cancellation soon, the great Kim Jong-un already boycotted the Olympics. I have first hand news that Biden will forbid US athletes to participate in next few weeks. Merkel and Putin will do the same soon.

Spoiler

OK, just tried to make sure you guys don't miss our I-hate-the-Olympics "friend" here. :p

To be fair, there really isn't a sports league one can compare in any way with the magnitude of the Olympics in terms of the massive number of people involved even at a very bare minimum. Just to hold the event you already need thousands of athletes and that's without anyone to actually organise and 'lead' it, whereas a football match requires a number of people which if you plan correctly can probably stay in double digits. Some sports of course require more simply because of larger fields of participants, but still not even close to a thousand.

Also, Japan seriously messed up the vaccination so far, just look at this comparison of the G7 countries:

https://ourworldindata.org/explorers/coronavirus-data-explorer?zoomToSelection=true&time=328..latest&pickerSort=desc&pickerMetric=population&Metric=People+vaccinated&Interval=7-day+rolling+average&Relative+to+Population=true&Align+outbreaks=false&country=USA~GBR~European+Union~JPN~CAN~FRA~DEU~ITA

They really need to do something about this and quickly vaccinate their population, otherwise there won't be any spectators at the events, or worse, they will hit by a huge wave and who knows what they will do in that case.

Plans are that it will accelerate in May. No doubt that's pretty damn slow so far, but if things go according to plan, they will be done in time for the Olympics.

If athlethes having max 3 day stay after event is over, which I presume will be reduced to 1 and a half day no more than approx 4000 athlethes would be in Tokyo at a time in a village of capacity 10000+. Correct me if I am wrong  with the calculations.

That alone will cut down the number of attendees.  The only reason you see all of those one-athlete-and-ten-officials small countries at the Opening Ceremony is the chance for three weeks’ free holiday.  :raspberry:

  • 2 weeks later...

http://bit.ly/kyodopoll

Still very troubling numbers here for Japanese Government and organizers.  Poll released April 11

Want Games cancelled    39.2%

Want Games Postponed  32.8%

Games should go on         24.5%

Doesn't say about the other 3.5%

    • The NFL are pushing had to develop flag football in Australia in hopes of getting it included in 2032. I hope they fail tbh.   Single gender sports fail the gender equality requirement so netball is out unless they can rapidly fix their gender problem. World Netball not so long ago was refusing utterly to sanction men's international netball or even support the growth of men's netball so they kind of sabotaged themselves and are only changing courses out of self interest because Brisbane was awarded the Olympics.   It doesn't even make sense to propose Aussie rules given how poor the participation is outside of Australia.
    • - Great Britain Team Size Prediction for Winter Olympic Games 2026 Milano Cortina   Ski Sports   Alpine Skiing  (4) - The qualification system is a bit confusing, but from what I gather the team is Guaranteed 2 quotas (one for each gender), and then more are given for rankings. I can only see 1 female qualifying, but the men's team is a bit stronger, and could improve with some juniors coming through. I would say a baseline of 3, with a max of 5, 6 if things really improve.  Cross Country Skiing  (3) - The men's team came 11th in the world cup last year, and with some good results could move up to top 10 which would give 3 quotas, The women's team is non existant.  Ski Jumping  (0) - Nope Nordic Combined  (0) - Nope Freestyle Skiing  (6) - Based on last year rankings, the athletes are ranked: M Moguls (26/30), M Ski Cross (26/32), M Halfpipe (33/25), M Slopestyle (39+40/30) W Moguls (23+42/30), W Halfpipe (3/25), W Big Air (5/30), W Slopestyle (19+22/30)  Barring Injury , thats 2 quotas on the women's side, and I would predict 4 more, with a max team of 7 or 8. Snowboarding  (2) - W Halfpipe (34/25) is the only unknown quota, as both Charlotte Bankes and Mia Brookes should qualify easily. Huw Nightlingale may get a spot for the Mixed Team snowboard cross but I don't know how it works. Biathlon  (0) - Nope Ski Mountaineering  (0) - Nope     Skating Sports   Speed Skating  (2) - Cornelius Kersten and Elia Smelding should qualify, although they both haven't competed this year. Short Track Speed Skating  (2) - A team of 5 went to the world but only a couple could really qualify Figure Skating  (4) - Fear and Gibson should qualify, and the pair team is ranked 16th in the world with 19 qualifiers.      Sleigh Sports   Luge  (0) - Nope Skeleton  (6) - A full team is certainly on the cards, but with only ranking points from the next season counting a lot could change Bobsleigh  (6) - Brad Hall and Co should qualify for both 2 and 4 man. I doubt any more will qualify from the mens side. Adele Nicholl on the womens should also qualify in both events     Team Sports   Curling  (12) - Anything but a full team would be a dissapointment Ice Hockey  (0) - The men were the only chance       Total Optimistic Prediction  -  (60) Total Pessimistic Prediction  - (32)   Total Realistic Prediction  -  (47)

    • North American rugby quotas ( and qualified automatically)    M: and W: and
    • I remember Caroline Golubitsky. She competed with Vezzali for a while but not for long. Rita Konig, whom Vezzali defeated in the final of the Olympic Games in 2000, was more famous, as well as Sabine Bau and Anja Mueller. From what I remember, the Germans competed fiercely with us at some point, but they almost always lost.
