Given that the German Eight lost to GB at Lucerne in their only meeting this year why do you think that they are such strong favourites?

because when it really mattered, in the last couple of years, they've just been untouchable (even if some winning margin could suggest something different)...

world cup events to me don't count anything...I'm pretty sure all big teams were playing games and/or making experiments before taking their final decisions (and some did even miss the event)...

by the way, it's just my opinion...and I'm notorious to miss most of my predictions...:p

Would you agree that rowing may surpass boxing as Ireland's strongest sport in Tokyo?

I think Rowing will be their second sport this edition - they are VERY strong in boxing, especially considering women's side, stronger perhaps even than usual

Interesting, the British eight is mentioned as favourite (slightly ahead of Germany, I must add). More interestingly: Croatia isn't even mentioned in the pairs. They have named three countries for every event it seems (they're the first bookmaker with odds, so I'm sure they're being careful :p), and for the pairs those are - in order - Romania, Serbia and Italy.

British eight might well be a contender, but if I didn't miss anything, the Sinkovic bros :CRO in men's Pair are miles ahead of their main rivals (ITA and ROU, SRB not at all imho)...

if CRO decided to put them on another boat (or if they're injured), then, it's a completely different story...but, as I said, I'm normally very bad in predicting results and I haven't read anything about them in the last period...

There hasn't been a worlds since 2019. GB haven't faced Germany at a Worlds or Europeans since then, and GBR are the reigning European champions which GER skipped, just as GBR skipped in 2020. The only time they've duelled at all recently was at the World Cup, where GBR won.

There's an argument Germany is the stronger team, and certainly they may win - but in no sane universe are they a sure thing on paper, it simply isn't true.

Rowing and a whole bunch of other sports:

You'll see a lot of these sports appear at various bookmakers in the next few weeks, like always in the weeks before Olympics they start coming up with odds for most if not all sports at some point. Some bookie more than others, but big ones like Pinnacle, Unibet or Bwin usually have a very large variety of sports offered.

I see they have reigning champion Joe Clarke as 2nd favourite to win the K1 canoe slalom even though he hasn't even been selected for the Games. I wonder how many other howlers there are like that.

Germany didn't skip these years European Championships. They finished fourth. But it needs to be mentioned that it was right after some weeks, when they couldn't train properly due to Covid restrictions and hadn't the fitness for the second half.

If the Germans were playing games or experimenting in their last competitive row before  the Games they're either exceptionally confident or exceptionally foolish. We shall see.

I don’t think many nations who went to the World Cup events were playing games. There has been precious few opportunities to row competitively in recent times and I’d say most of the instances of lack of form or unexpected results would be down to nations / athletes being at different stages of their preparation and training and with Covid no doubt having obvious impacts on preparation.

I can see us winning three medals in Rowing but cannot see any more than 3 in Boxing. All depends on the draw in boxing.

Maybe slightly off topic here but all 3 women could win medals and Kurt Walker has a strong chance too. Now of course we still a bit of luck with the draw but it’s still 4 medal chances

    • Canoe Sprint There is a now a cap of 5 athletes per gender in the kayak events (down from 6 in 2024). The World Championships has been replaced by the Olympic Qualification Rankings.   K2 lost 2 boat quotas while K4 has gained 1 boat quota. Quota distribution is quite complicated as it usually is for canoe sprint. They also force nations to compete in a minimum number of events based on the number of athletes qualified; 2 and 3 athletes per boat class must compete in 2 events, 4 must compete in all 3 events and 5 must compete in all 3 events and have two entries in the K1 event.
    • Wrestling will have a completely new format, I do not like the changes. ranking isn't really a good idea in this sport, this will force wrestlers to compete in so many events to collect points. which is not good for their health. specially with the current UWW ranking points distribution system which is plain stupid   they are also gifting 18 quotas to very weak countries by that last qualification event. but I understand their point of view. can't wait to see lots of Russian wrestlers compete for weak countries for that 1 available quota.
    • Canoe Slalom Quotas from men's/women's K1 have been moved to men's/women's KX1. K1 will now have 14 quotas while KX1 will have 10 quotas. C1 remains at 17 quotas. Athletes may participate in other events up to a maximum of 2 athletes per NOC.   The World Championship qualifier has been dropped in favour of the Olympic Qualification Rankings (7 K1, 10 C1, 3 KX1), afterwards you have the Continental Qualifiers (1 per boat) and then a new Global Qualifier (2 per boat).   There were a few changes regarding ways to ensure an athlete can only obtain 1 quota. The biggest being at each stage the boat priority is K1 > KX1 > C1 for the rankings and KX1 > K1 > C1 for the continental/global qualifiers. This basically means if the same athlete qualifiers in multiple boats then the quota will be given to the kayak over canoe.
    • I'll post significant changes periodically. I'll start with the recently added/updated documents.   Archery The addition of mixed compound (12M & 12W) forced a reduction on the recurve side. The mixed compound quotas are distributed as follows   Host - 1 World Championships - 3 Continental Games - 5 World Ranking List - 2 Final Qualifier - 1   To compensate the team events will now only have 8 nations. 2 quotas were removed from the World Ranking List and 2 were removed from the Final Qualifier.   Individual recurve and mixed recurve distribution is the same
    • In Rome, it would be useful to roof the swimming pool complex at Foro Italico, possibly with the option of retracting the roof and covering the tennis court complex. Overall, there's a lot to do, for example, compared to Budapest, but unfortunately, this is Italy How many years has Roma been building their new stadium, and they keep pushing back the completion date- now I read it's 2030? and it should be ready. The same goes for Milan- there should be a modern complex of indoor swimming pools with 50 meters pools, etc., but there's a problem with one stupid football stadium, which will only be built after an ultimatum from UEFA
