Here's a question.

If a boxer qualifies for the Olympics as a member of the refugee team then gets citizenship of another country, do they lose that qualification, does it transfer to their new country or does something else happen.

Thinking of Cindy Ngamba, the middleweight who has brilliant this week at the World Boxing Cup for the refugee team, but is also still waiting for her British citizenship.

not sure at 100%, but I think that once she gets the passport and declares for she would lose any privilege (qualification included) reserved to the refugee team members and she would have to try and qualify for her new Home Nation through the regular pathway

In a normal world yes you are right. but with current IOC no

 

Raheleh Asemani qualified for the refugee team in Taekwondo back in 2016 (she even beat the Belgian athlete in her route to the quota) but got her Belgian passport in time.

 

they probably managed to bribe the right person and here we go, she went to Rio and even almost won a  medal for Belgium.  it's just about meeting the right IOC person with the right amount of money.

Outside of other factors you allege, I feel like that's what should happen in cases like this. The athlete won the right to go, so they should be allowed to compete for their host nation. Going from "stateless" to citizenship is different to me from a formal nationality switch.

And if the newly qualified refugee qualified in a weight in which his/her new nation already have a quota?

I spent a while going down a rabbit hole of trying to figure this out a couple of months ago and I think my conclusion was that they just haven't announced it either way yet although that may have since changed.

They haven't seeded any of the qualification tournaments so maybe they just don't although that would gaurantee some very strange medals. My guess is they probably do include seeds and just end up seeding the European/ Asian and American champions along with either the African or Oceanian champion but I don't really have anything to base that on.

Right, Updated top 30 in each event who are competing at the first world qualifying tournament. You can assume that their position relative to the already qualified boxers is unchanged (although there are a few I would change). Apologies for the weird order but startlists came out late so still updating as the competition starts in some weightclasses.
