Oh I agree. I mean, I do strangely enough like them at swimming world championships as a fun intermezzo, some massive testosterone bombing in the pool for a bit :d

Thing is, there they are not in anythings way: world championships in sport X can have all the events they want, it's not in the way of other sports after all. At the Olympics that would be different. Same as why I don't mind the biathlon pursuit being in the biathlon world championships, but it is horrendous that it's a separate Olympic event.

Through with Biathlon everyone in the pursuit is there anyway.

That's not the point. The point there is that it's an inherently unfair medal event, where athletes have an actual (and in many cases nearly impossible to overcome) disadvantage based on another medal event. That is just nonsense.

First of all one's participation in one medal event should not even depend on another medal event, but one should definitely not start with a time disadvantage in a medal event and have the qualifier for that be a medal event in itself.

It's kind of like if in modern pentathlon we'd give out medals after the first three events and then also separate medals for whoever finishes the laser run first (using the standings to decide the start orders and time gaps).

This might be a hot take but I actually think the 50s are the most boring swimming events.

Let's be honest, most of the swimming distances are redundant :d There isn't something that unique of doing 100 or 200 meters. But because the sport is as popular as it is and has a big branding of creating superstars, who can win "countless medals", it gets a pass on the program.

If we were looking objectively, compared with the other sports, the swimming schedule should be only:

- 100 m for the 4 styles

- 400 and 1500 m freestyle

- 400 m individual medley

- 4x100 freestyle and 4x100 medley relays

- Mayyyyyybe a mixed relay

Not sure of the format but it will be one male and one female. And it would not be their results from the individual event added together.

If that is the case they ran an event like this at The European Championships in Glasgow 2018 and it went down very good

Since the next Olympics are in 2028, and of course by now the program is entirely finalized I assume (since athletes start their new Olympic cycle immediately): is there a clear list of events that were in Paris and won't be in LA, and events that weren't in Paris and will be in LA?

We'll know the new events in summer 2025.

About this. You would think this a good news.

But i have seen in the past years, that anytime i say "After X and X are gone it will be better" it's the complete opposite. I thought Bach will be much better than Rogge at that time and it backfired spectacularly. Now you think anyone after Bach can't do a worse job, but i'm not holding my breath.

And we also know this should be three event: men’s single scull, women’s single scull and a mixed double scull.

Ah yes, beach rowing, one more of the stupid, stupid things, that will be happening for 2028. Who needs actual rowing, when you can have a knock off version to appease whoever..

Ya, if I had my way the quotas / events freed up from eliminating lightweight rowing would have gone to canoeing.

This entire conversation is just proving that those constant changes in every edition is more troubling than helping I mean there are young athletes out there training to get to the Olympics only to learn after each edition that there sport might be out, I hope the next president will care enough to make a program for the long run

I think there needs to be a balance between having stability in the program and also evolving.

I think adding sports like climbing, skateboarding and cricket were all overdue changes, I’m just not super keen in how it was done.

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
    • The worst editions in XXI century for us were Vancouver: 5 medals (only 1 gold for Razzoli's on the penultimate day) and Sochi: 8 medals (but no gold). Turin was already a prelude to this bad period, although the number of gold medals was ok. Overall we won fewer medals at home than in 2002 and this was probably the only case in the 21st century when the host country won fewer medals at home than 4 years earlier, either in summer or winter. In general the years 2008-2016 were very bad in our sport, both in summer and winter. Only 2018 in Korea was a slight rebuild + 2 fantastic summer editions in Tokyo and Paris. in Beijing 2022 we won a lot of medals - 17 but only 2 gold (If it weren't for Gogga's injury, I think it would have been 4 gold).
