Paris 2024 Quota Simulation: 2022 Data Edition

Hey guys, if you were around during the 2022 Winter Olympics, you may remember that I made some team size predictions for each nation. I am pleased to say that I will be doing them again for Paris though not as often (because simulating 2,900 athletes is much easier than simulating 10,500 athletes). Over the last month, I've been gathering data from 2022 World Rankings and World Championships to try to see what each NOC team could look like in 2024. There are, however, a few things to note.

  • Russia are NOT INCLUDED in this simulation. Due to the current situation in Ukraine and a lack of participation by both countries, I have decided to exclude them.
  • North Korea is also not in the simulation because I have no idea what's going on with them
  • Refugee athletes aren't included either
  • Tuvalu is currently projected with 0 athletes because there was no athlete that was unable to qualify in any sport under the simulation. If anyone has any idea what they could qualify in, please let me know.
  • Internal qualification procedures (e.g. Netherlands, New Zealand) are not taken into account.
  • Simulated universality eligible NOC's are marked with an *
  • Unfortunately not every quota was able to be filled up. Some sports didn't have enough data to fill in all the quotas. Some sports had athletes take up multiple quotas. And then there is swimming where the IOC decided to make the qualifying standards so hard that after the final number of athletes was still 100 short of the maximum number of quotas.

Despite the absence of Russia and Belarus, the quotas went down drastically from over 11,300 to 10,500. This means that we expect each NOC to have their team, on average, reduced by 8% of their 2020 size. In total, 113 teams had decreased in size, 25 stayed the same size, and 66 increased in size. Each team's change in size is shown next to the NOC name.

So without further ado, let's get started. Please let me know if you have any thoughts. I plan to make another post with some analysis and other statistics about this simulation.

Absolutely Amazing do you plan on doing the simulation later this year?( or later on during this qualification period ) with more competition down the road I guess the results could shape differently and it could be really interesting to see how close to the actual results you can get, overall wow

:DEN Denmark: 106 (+2)

(Archery - 1, Athletics - 6, Badminton - 9, Sprint Canoe - 5, BMX - 1, Mountain Biking - 3, Road Cycling - 6, Track Cycling - 7, Equestrian - 5, Golf - 4, Artistic Gymnastics - 1, Handball - 28, Judo - 1, Rowing - 7, Sailing - 9, Shooting - 6, Swimming - 2, Table Tennis - 1, Tennis - 1, Triathlon - 2, Wrestling - 1)

Impressive job though I do have a few doubts.

Who qualifies in archery?
What sailing events do you have us qualifying for? 49er, 49erFX, Nacra17, Ilca6, women's IQ foil and?

Swimming feels pretty low as well though we do have some problems there. But I guess that's a question of how last year was.

Here are the predictions for the Dutch team :NED

Archery: 1 woman and 1 man (no team of 3, Steve Wijler is the only one with a decent level) 2

Athletics: hopefully we can qualify all the relays 35

Artistic swimming: duet 2

Badminton: women’s double, men’s double and a mixed double 4

Basketball: no universality qualification tournament, less chance for our men’s team 0

Beach volleyball: I think 2 men couples and 1 women couple 6

Boxing: no Olympic sport anymore, otherwise no Dutch competitors 0

Breaking: no idea, I thought it was a joke when Breaking was announced as an Olympic sport 0

Canoeing slalom: at the women’s side we have some good competitors 2

Canoeing sprint: no way 0

Cycling BMX : 3 women and 1 or 2 men 4

Cycling Mountainbike: 1 men (or will Mathieu van der Poel return?) and 2 woman 3

Cycling Road: full teams for men and women 8

Cycling Track: women pursuit, madison, omnium and teamsprint (7), men Madison, omnium and teamsprint (5) 12

Diving: at the women’s side a synchron 3 meter and 1 individual 3

Equestrian: jumping and dressage teams qualified, one eventing rider 7

Fencing:  no chance at all 0

Field hockey: both men and women with a full team 32

Football: no chance for women, a slim chance for men, but don’t think so 0

Golf: maybe 1 woman 1

Gymnastics artistic: only two individual gymnasts, too much rumours after all the scandals in Dutch gymnastics 2

Gymnastics rhytmic: no chance at all 0

Trampolino: no chance at all 0

Handball: men’s team becoming better and better, but no realistic chance; woman still have a chance, but are not as good as they were the last five years, so my prediction is 0

Judo: both at the men’s and women’s side 4 judoka’s 8

Modern pentathlon:  0

Rowing: difficult to say because almost all the crews are going to change, probably 19 men and 21 women 40

Rugby sevens: no chance 0

Sailing: I predict 6 boats, total sailers 8

Shooting: unfortunately no good shooters in The Netherlands 0

Skateboarding: normally all 3 woman 3

Sport climbing: no climbers at all 0

Surfing: 0

Swimming: somewhere around 15 men and woman in total 15

Table tennis: only woman who could make it is pregnant now, not sure if she’ll come back 0

Taekwondo: 0

Tennis: 2 men for the singles, 2 extra for doubles and maybe 1 woman for mixed doubles 5

Triathlon: 3

Volleyball: my heart is bleeding, no volleyballteams, especially after the bad results at the WCh on home soil and the fact that the woman cannot find a good coach 12

Water polo: hopefully the women can make it 12

Weightlifting: only 1 man, Enzo Kuworge 1

Wrestling: no wrestlers 0

The total should be around 230 athletes. I.m.o. the prediction of Topicmaster1010 (286) is a little too ambitious for our small country. But a lot of respect for his work ... wow!

Good predictions, probably a bit more realistic than the 286 prediction yeah.

I wonder if we're even going to qualify 1 man in mountainbiking, with Vaders injury and Van der Poel being his unpredictable self.

For triathlon I feel like there's quite a lot of spots for the mixed relay, so I think 4 could be possible. Although if Rachel Klamer retires before Paris, without her it will be difficult to field a good relay.

:POL Poland: 214 (+8)

(Archery - 1, Athletics - 51, Boxing - 4, Slalom Canoe - 4, Sprint Canoe - 13, Mountain Biking - 2, Road Cycling - 4, Track Cycling - 15, Diving - 1, Equestrian - 6, Fencing - 9, Golf - 1, Judo - 5, Modern Pentathlon - 3, Rowing - 15, Sailing - 11, Shooting - 8, Sport Climbing - 3, Swimming - 17, Table Tennis - 3, Taekwondo - 2, Tennis - 5, Triathlon - 1, Indoor Volleyball - 24, Beach Volleyball - 2, Wrestling - 4)

No idea how we would qualify in diving but very good job anyway :hatoff:

Btw. This isn't the most liked post ever on forum? @Sindo

Unfortunately, players must be entered in either singles or doubles in order to play mixed doubles. So that woman would have to be qualified in another event in order to also play mixed doubles.

However, I could see the Netherlands having more men as they can have another doubles team and make two teams from Botic, Middelkoop, Haase, Koolhof, Rojer...

Very impressive @Topicmaster1010!!

Did you really simulate/predict the qualification for every single event?

Thanks you!

Yes, I actually went through the qualification system of every sport. :d

Some of them like the team sports and ones with smaller quotas were very straight forward.

Athletics and swimming took longer to do as you would expect but the qualification systems were pretty straight forward at least.

Judo and shooting were personally the most annoying sports to simulate.

    • this is not funny at all, pal
    • I think I can live with the draw , not a bad group at all. just a week ago our mafia coach said his dream group is Belgium, Egypt and Haiti, he almost got that !   but it's really hard for me (and so many others) to cheer for this team, A mafia boss coach, disgusting group of players. I never had this feeling about any NT in any sport before but still the national team is the national team. you have to like it  coaches and players come and go, the team is what matters.   if the team makes it to the competition, I'm sure there will be lots of Iranians in the stadium despite the orange's ban, that will never be a problem.
