YEEEESSSSS!!! Been waiting for this announcement for a while now. 2018 just didn't feel the same without NHL players. Just hoping that COVID doesn't change plans. So excited to finally get to see our older generation of players (Crosby, Bergeron, Tavares, Pietrangelo, etc.) play along side the new wave of players that have risen to the top of the NHL (McDavid, MacKinnon, Point, Makar, etc.). Hopefully we can come away with the gold medal. Depending on who the GM picks, this has the potential to be one of the most skilled Team Canada's ever.

And it's not just Canada, the level of international hockey talent is greater than ever. Every country besides China will be sending some great players and I expect that there'll be a lot of competitive matches. Can't wait for the tournament to start!

:USA announced Mike Sullivan as head coach, will be assisted by Todd Reirden, John Hynes, David Quinn and Ryan Miller who will care about goalies. Stan Bowman will serve as GM and Bill Guerin as his assistant.

For Sullivan this will be his second experience as head coach with international hockey, he led team USA to the quarterfinals at the 2007 World Championships in Russia.

He was also at the Winter Olympics as assistant of Peter Laviolette in Torino 2006 where the team finished 4th. He served also twice as head coach assistant (of John Tortorella) at 2008 WCh and 2016 World Cup where USA lost all 3 preliminary round games.

This list should give you a good idea of Team :CHN players. All the ones with a Chinese flag next to their name. To China’s credit all appear to have some form of Chinese heritage.

IIHF told me they weren’t relaxing the eligibility rules for China and eg. Jake Chelios has no Chinese flag next to his name so I assume no more naturalizations?

Question is if that means no waiver for eg. Ethan Werek which is a 4 year case as he once represented Canada

New updates about our favorite pre-olympics time telenovela.

Found this on the specialized hockey forum send by a Norwegian user. Here is the copy/paste of his post

China will play against a russian KHL team 13 and 15 november according to norwegian hockey president Tage Pettersen. The game will be streamed on internet and is open for everyone. Luc Tardif (president iihf) and IIHF will pick out 5 experts that will monitor the games and decide if China is suited to take part in the men's icehockey olympic tournament.

Norwegian back Bonsaksen says to VG, it's not good for the sport if a team is beaten 30-0.. Tardif fear for the sports reputation if a team loses 30-0

Both VG and nytimes have articles about this.

Is there any result if IIHF decides China not being able to participate in the Games due to very low level. Who would take their place? The next highest IIHF ranked team?

Norway. As the highest ranked IIHF nation non qualified (11th).

it looks like 1 or 2 games between :CHN and a KHL team (still no officially announced which one) will be played during the 13-15 november period. Match(es) will be attended by 5 IIHF officials who will then evalute if China will be allowed to paricipate at the tournament. To make it fair the match(es) will be streamed live and free through the whole globe.
