Denmark is possibly the biggest dissapointment of the tournament.

Denmark is nothing special for a while. They got the feel good boost after the Eriksen cardiac arrest @ Euro but it's only a storyline and not much else.

That part is less important. Let's say a theoretical (and of course impossible) situation in which Brazil plays the World Cup final, and a total of 10 million Brazilians are watching TV during the match. All 10 million are watching the match, so that'd be 100% score. That would suggest it was absolutely huge, whereas 10 million Brazilians watching is of course...well, almost nothing :p

Compared to the total population of the country is the main thing, yes.

Still, tv networks and advertisers always look carefully at those data, as they're only interested in the people who actually are watching and are their target.

So, I wouldn't name them "less important", even if they obviously have to be put in the right context.

Well, actually the tv share is the only objective and correct way to measure the audience.

A simple number of people doesn't say anything if it's not related to the total population of the Country and the number of people in front of their tv screen in that moment.

No it's not. When you go out with the stat "Highest TV audience for a WC match ever" you can't just use tv share... Because there could have been, for example, 1 million people watching TV this time and 70% share is 700 k, while 8 years ago the highest share for a match could have been 50%, but 2 million people were watching TV. So which one is the higher audience, the 1 million 8 years ago, or the 700 k the other day..

The TV share is a nice modern marketing/advertising trick, which is used to masquerade the declining TV audience. But, when you go out with a grand claim, just give the actual number of viewers.

I thought Denmark would come through this group but it’s not that shocking neither. It was more shocking how many people had tipped them as a dark horse to win the World Cup. That was just totally unrealistic. What is shocking to me though is Australia qualifying to the knockouts! I never saw that coming at all! I’m delighted for them though, love seeing this type of team battling their way through the group against the odds :)

Hmmmm, they had the most points in the UEFA Qualification for the WC and almost made the Nations League Final 4 a few months ago?

Truth is, they were preparing for a political conference, instead of a football tournament. 30th place would be fitting.

Well, that's the actual data...

If you just want the number to remember for the ages, then ok, but you won't find anything impressive in a relatively small Country.

The actual data announced in a very specific way...

Why do you think i'm expecting Superbowl numbers and to be impressed?

The stat was only covering Portugal. A country with 10 million population. If their highest match viewership is 4 million from 2006, and this match isn't beating that 4 million, then it is not the "Highest audience WC match ever" plain and simple, even if it has 95% share, when only 2 million people were watching...
