Russia-Ukraine Crisis Consequences in Sports

Recommended Posts

I feel as the situation escalates in Ukraine federations and organisations like Fina and the multiple Tennis ones will have no choice but to revert their decision on letting Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing.

World Rugby has subsequently banned both Russia and Belarus. Not that they were major players anyway particularly in real rugby (15s) but that would ruin the Russian 7s program.

Absolutely disgusting ! Tennis should be kicked out of the Olympics.

Innocent Ukrainian civilians right now are killed in their country and russian tennis players will be allowed to play for big money at grand slams and so and even under their flag..

They won't compete under their flag. And so far that is the most reasonable decision made by ATP/WTA

Not all of them win big money, those outside the top 150 barely make a living.  It's not like in football where they can just keep playing for russian clubs in the russian league, they have no source of income if you don't allow them to travel and compete internationally.

It's foolish to think that the US would ever get this kind of treatment if they start a war anywhere. I wouldn't even blame racism why there wouldn't be boycotts in the case of another war in the Middle East similar to Iraq. People are only up in arms about this war because they see Ukraine as a democratic country that wants to join the West. If Russia would have invaded Belarus the international reaction wouldn't be anywhere near as dramatic. Sure, people were protesting against wars initiated by the US, but in the end it's our ideology (democracy, freedom) against a country or countries with an opposing ideology. If the US invades Iran the next day in the name of protecting freedom and democracy and whatever bullshit casus belli they fabricate this time, Europe would join them, and nobody would even talk about sanctions.

I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes, but I think it's important to point out that the US was not trying to annex Iraq or any other Middle Eastern country...

No matter the motive, it was still an unilateral unlawful invasion, and as such, a violation of UN law, same as now.

Still no one was to oppose “‘murica”

Exactly same thing for Saudi Arabia in Yemen

I dont know if it was posted already but FIVB banned all national teams and clubs of Russia and Belarus. Russia also lost hosting rights of Men's World Championships.

Svitolina played Potapova last night, in bright Ukrainian colours. Something like this has much more of a message than telling a random player from somewhere down the rankings "you can't play".

Some may argue that athletes are not to blame. Partly, yes I agree as well, But, Unfortunately, they represent the country of the aggressor, and Putin likes to show his propaganda through them.

Whole world and different sectors (Sport included) Rejecting the Russian aggression (with support of Belarus) in Ukraine is not a political stance, but a question of what world we want to live in. Whether you continue to be free, live in peace, or the one where you are threatened by occupation and the threat of a nuclear catastrophe.

    • I think the reason is that it's generally preferable to have a fast shooter in the 1st leg, and especially in the prone shooting, where Hofer is quite slow.   Now, I'm not saying I agree with the choice, because I don't. I think it's going to neutralize Giacomel's skiing skills in the 1st lap at least.   I guess the idea is to try and set a very fast pace in the 1st leg, which is usually quite tactical, but I'm afraid that's going to force Giacomel to risk too much because he will feel he has to make some time somehow.   Regardless, Italy must be on the podium tomorrow. I think that would be crucial for the following races as well. I think France is the clear favorite, but the other teams are not stronger than Italy on paper.
