No-brainer. This multi-sport European Championships made no sense from the start and who knows how long that idea keeps going. Athletics is big enough it doesn't need to share the table with other sports.

Maybe they should have a multi-sport games? Perhaps you can call it the European Games? :p

European Championships U18 starting 4-8 July in Jerusalem.

The Dutch :NED team consists of 19 athletes in total.

Four of them are 400m hurdlers. Wonder if that's some sort of early Bol effect already.

The one that nobody ever wants to host?

To be serious, isn't it about time the European Games are abandoned?

It's surprising that each country can only send two participants in each event instead of three. Was it always this way? I don't remember.

The Greek :GRE team consists of 48 athletes in total. We had around 80 with standards. In some events we had 7 or 8 with standards but only two got selected due to these limits :yikes:

Lots of National Championships this weekend.  Unfortunately the one most people want to see - the US Nationals - are locked away pretty tight on pay TV sites, although the individual finals will get to YT later.  British one is free streaming.

Also on free, the Kenyan World & Commonwealth trials (official National Champs were last month.)

News from the US trials.  Sha-Carri Richardson fails to emulate Florence Griffiths-Joyner's World Record, to the extent of going out in the first round.

Many dodgy bootleg streams here, watch 'em before the US Legal System gets out of bed.

Lithuanian athletics championships opened today with the Discus Throw

1. Mykolas Alekna - 69.00 PB, remains the 5th best thrower even with the PB, really shows the quality of throwing this season.

2. Andrius Gudžius - 65.21, really couldn't handle the pressure today, only two valid throws.

3. Aleksas Abromavičius - 59.93

4. Martynas Alekna - 59.70

Updates from the Lithuanian championships

Rugilė Miklyčiūtė (2005) goes above and beyond. She broke the Lithuanian pole vault NR a week ago and today she smashed it!

3.60 XXO

3.75 O

3.95 O

4.00 O

4.10 XO

And then she stopped jumping.

First ever Lithuanian woman to jump 4 metres, becomes the third best European U18 vaulter this season, qualifies for World U20 championships.

Another very respectable result came from Jogailė Petrokaitė with a clean 6.76 jump. That's her PB and she's having a season of her life. Might be enough for ranking points to get quotas in both the World and European championships. We'll know next week.

Not a real event, but 38 yo :GRE Antigoni Drisbioti became the oldest Greek to set a national record, this time in the 5000m walk (she also did it earlier this year in the new 35k walk as a 37 yo). With 21:06.40, she broke Christina Deskou's record from 1999 (21:37.78).

    • British Columbia in general and Vancouver in particular are awesome and it’s great more people got to discover it thanks to Vancouver 2010.
    • And of course the British being famous for curmudgeons, there were always plenty of curmudgeons to quote.  Then of course from the opening ceremony and the cycle race on the very first morning it was obviously going to be triumph, so everyone just shut up for a while.
    • Yep, the amount of emergency services I heard at some point was a little extreme (for our little town), so I checked what was going on and saw they were all being called to a specific location. Until then I thought maybe it was part of a parade of trucks and agricultural vehicles that was on it's way from the next town over, decorated with lights and stuff.   Since I knew it was on the parade route, I was sure one of those big vehicles had hit people somehow (there were, besides the many vehicles, also two helicopters on the way, meaning it certainly wasn't about a single victim).   We picked our bikes and went to take a look, absolutely chaos in the area. Never saw so many services combined together, fire trucks from 20km away, ambulance after ambulance came racing by, people frantically trying to make way for them (the roads weren't really closed yet).   While there we heard someone who had been close say that the parade hadn't arrived yet and what seemed to have happened was that a car from the other side came onto the roundabout and simply never turned. "It's a massive drama over there, unbelievable", he said.   Quite quickly rumours started spreading of course, the first one turned out to be true: a middle aged (local) woman was behind the wheel and seems to have become unwell. Local security camera showed the car going at high speed right before the roundabout.   Plenty of rumours going around in terms of who were involved of course, and people keeping each other up to date to see if they know this or that family and such...   Never expected my little town to be big news in the Netherlands, even including some breaking broadcasts, live reporters and everything, damn. By far the biggest thing to happen here in my memory

    • For me, these were very good Olympics, and British sport benefited greatly from them, and is still benefiting. I fear it will be much worse here. Canada also benefited very good on Vancouver 2010 – this is very good see in the medal standings of subsequent Winter Games after 2010 and earlier.
    • Nobody hates Britain more than the British media so… I recall it being quite a pessimistic tone before the London games started.
    • I'm curious what was written before London 2012? Did they attack their own country, or did they just keep quiet?

    • Very true point.  Although I think at this point everyone is just holding their collective breath until the test event.  The NHL isn't going to rage anymore until then because it's not like that would make the arena progress go any quicker
