Russia isn't doing that bad. If we exclude Sochi, which was an anomaly as a host nation, they had in 2010 only 3 golds, while in 2018 they were only 2.

So they are having a better Olympics already, than those two, both in terms of gold medals and overall medals. And they were close in winning a few more, like the biathlon relay today, which Latypov threw away in the end, or the short track relay yesterday. Plus they have a few events to come in which they could get more golds, so i think they will pass some nations and settle around 5th-6th overall.

They are the most versatile nation, the only sports where they are irrelevant are nordic combined and alpine skiing. USA, Canada and Norway don't have the same versatility, they are all irrelevant in 4+ sports.

According to fivethirtyeight Russia is the biggest overperformer so far (9 medals above expectation), followed by Italy (7 medals above expectation) and Japan (5 medals above expectation). They predict that Norway will win the most medals (34), followed by Russia (28), Canada/USA (27), Germany (25), Netherlands/Austria (19), Sweden (18), Japan (17) and Italy (16). I think not many people would have predicted Italy to win more medals than Switzerland/China and at least as many medals as France.

We desperately need to win 2 more medals including one gold so we can equal the 2018 results :fingers: (more would be great of course but we've had so many disappointments already that I don't believe it's possible)

I believe with Norway's gold in biathlon they've now broken the record for most golds at a WOG (previously 14).

Yes, they have.

    • It’s honestly baffling how bad she was in 2018. Just absolutely lost her head. Real shame too because she is so gifted. I do hope Li Jianrou sends her a Christmas card every year tho, she was absolutely gifted a gold medal by Christie in 2014.
    • Oh I’m not done yet, unfortunately. From the names that could be back but are still injured   Courtney Hoffos Mikael Kingsbury (should be back before the Olympics) Connor Howe (he returned, but nowhere close to his best so his injury is still giving him issues) Connor Bedard Meryeta O’Dine Megan Oldham
    • Italy also has its own list, although of course not every injury is as terribile  in terms of medal losses. In winter sports have unfortunately much more injuries than summer sports. In the summer only: cycling, volleyball and football.     - Brignone: will return in January, - Tabanelli: will return for the Olympics, - Bassino: season over, - Marta Rossetti: season over, - Lara Malsinier: season over.
    • TNT staff expect they will offer it at a price similar to what they offering the Winter Olympics for rather than the full TNT price.   But equally the main coverage is apparently going to be very different to what they do for the Olympics (Which is less pundits and studio chat than the BBC) with speculation it might be based on NBC’s Olympic coverage with tons of human interest etc.
    • India Sherret (ski cross)   Another name to the ever-growing list of injuries for the Canadian team… used to be excited for the Olympics, now not so much…
    • Voted  Thank you for extending the deadline and allowing me to vote once my exams are over. @OlympicIRL
