Winter Olympic Games Beijing 2022 Medal Count

Recommended Posts

:NED had 36 top 8 placements with only 41 athletes in Beijing, probably in part due to the impossible qualification standards for Dutch athletes in certain sports

7th WOG in a row where :NED finished top 10 in the medal ranking, but only the first time ever where we won medals in 3 different sports during the same winter olympic games

1) I think your trend in speed skating at the olympics is negative (2014 -> 2018 -> 2022). The Netherlands should remain dominant, but not sure by how much.

2) A medal in a 4th sport (snowboard) wasn't impossible and your prospects there look good. Not sure about skeleton though. So again winning medals in at least 3 different sports in 2026 looks definitely realistic.

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.

This placing tables make my disappointment for Italy having only 2 wins bigger...after the Big 5 (NOR, GER, RUS, USA, CAN) we are comparable (if not better), as placements and multidisciplinarity, to every Tier 2 nation...yet we always end up, for one reason or another, winning less than all of them.

I was wondering what the 2022 WOG medal table of "traditional sports and events" would look like, so I made up one with two rules: the disciplines must have been officially part of the program at least once before 1972 (50 years ago), and only those events count that have been in the program at least 7 times including Beijing (which means that any event added after Nagano doesn't count).

This means that Snowboard, Freestyle Skiing, and Short Track are out. Curling and Skeleton make it in thanks to a few inclusions before 1972.

Number of events that are in:

Alpine Skiing (10)

Biathlon (6)

Bobsleigh (2)

Cross-Country (8)

Curling (2)

Figure Skating (4)

Ice Hockey (2)

Luge (3)

Nordic Combined (2)

Skeleton (1)

Ski Jumping (3)

Speed Skating (10)

And with these older events and traditional sports, this is how the medal table looks like:

1. :GER  8-7-4

2. :NOR  8-3-9

3. :ROC  5-9-4

4. :NED  5-4-1

5. :SUI  5-1-3

6. :SWE  5-1-2

7. :AUT  3-5-4

8. :FRA  3-4-2

9. :JPN  2-5-4

10. :USA  2-3-2

11. :FIN  2-1-4

12. :CHN  2-0-1

13. :CAN  1-2-4

14. :GBR  1-1-0

15. :SVK  1-0-1

16. :ITA  0-3-5

17. :SLO  0-2-0

18. :KOR  0-1-1

19. :BLR  0-1-0

20. :CZE  0-0-1

20. :POL  0-0-1

Unsurprisingly Europe dominates much more.

    • looks like the agreement is the international federations are in fact hosting the event, not the AG organizers, so everything is up to them to make it happen.   Teqball is now confirmed to have 5 events (singles and doubles) does it mean easy 5 gold medals for Thailand ?   Padel is not 100% confirmed yet. I assume there are still talks ongoing between the IF and the Japanese organizers.
    • I feel like this year's Eurovision is more wide open than ever 😂   There isn't a clear favorite, and that makes everything more exciting. Finland is looking strong, sure, but Ukraine always knows how to surprise people and connect with them. I was checking out the odds a bit, and I was struck by how quickly they're rising.   By the way, I found a site that compares the odds pretty clearly: https://casasdeapuestaseurovision.com/   It’s nothing special, but it gives you an idea of how things are shaping up before the semifinals. Although we all know how this goes… at Eurovision, everything can change in a matter of minutes
