Alpine Skiing at the Winter Olympic Games Beijing 2022

Recommended Posts

Here’s the system I’d recommend for the next qualification cycle. The FIS should create 2 Special Olympic Rankings per gender, one for speed events and one for tech events. The rankings consist of a combination of World Cup points earned in both events contained within the speed or tech program.

Criteria A - up to 60 quotas per gender: Top 30 from each ranking earns their country one quota place at the Olympics. There would be a limit of 4 quotas per ranking per country (so 8 per country via this criteria). Athletes cannot gain a quota from both rankings, and athletes placed outside the top 30 on either list cannot be allocated a quota via this criteria.

Criteria B - up to 80 quotas per gender: This would be the basic quota allocation, with the current rules in place. Countries who earned quota in criteria A would be ineligible to earn a quota through this method. If more than 80 countries have an athlete who meets the eligibility required, athletes will be ranked and chosen based on lower FIS Points.

Criteria C - number quota dependent on above criteria: The lowest ranked athlete in any individual event (according to either World Cup points, or FIS points) earns their country one quota, until there are no more quotas remaining. Any remaining unused quota from criteria A or B would be allocated using this method. This would also be the reallocation method. Countries could qualify a max of 4 quotas per gender under this method.

Maximum delegation size would be 12 per gender per country, for a total of 24. This system balances making sure the best athletes qualify, while also maximizing universality to the best possible degree.

:USA is sending an athlete with the first name "Winter" and an athlete with the last name "Winters" to the Winter Olympics. Truly a historic achievement.

Since when IOC cares about balance? Alpine skiing might be one of the most popular winter sports but it doesn't matter. IOC is all about urban "new" sports and new fans. Alpine skiing is literally too old school to profit. Freestyle skiing needs to be expanded especially that's it's so much more popular in USA and we all know NBC is king when it comes to what should have priority.

PS. There is no way 80 countries get a quota in alpine skiing. This is not athletics or swimming.

Being as 85 countries qualified for Beijing 2022, with 83 of those accepting quotas; I’d say it’s in the realm of possibility :d

Last-ditch effort for more quota places:

Austria seems to have requested FIS to transfer the unused quota places from several Women's events (Snowboard, freestyle) to the Men's Alpine quota. Moreover, they make allegations that the quota places for small nations which resulted from the races from the Malbun Exotic Nations Cup in January should be cancelled as the races were held under "questionable circumstances".

What a bunch of sore losers... They are blaming everyone for their own short comings. It's obviously the team management's fault that Austria failed to secure maximum quota. Honest management would resign immediately.

To be fair, it does seem Italy and France are basically requesting the same thing, so it's not just Austria :p

Well, looks like they all belong to the circle of Josef Fendt and his cronies. :hairpull:

Spoiler

You can't change the whole system and/or discount races just because you don't like the final outcome.

    • Exactly. Recent developments of the construction haven't been particularly encouraging, and while they'll probably get everything sorted just in time, a lot of North American fans have been quite vocal about every minor inconvenience.

    • Yeah. It was pretty bad that they cancel the contract with the original creative director after 7 months of work. I feel like politics, in this particular context of the changing of prime minister and the cabinet, may had caused changes in organizational decisions regarding the Sea Games including the direction of the opening ceremony.
    • That's what I figured.  Wouldn't be a proper lead up to an Olympics without some media-fueled fearmongering.
