Winter Olympic Games 2030 Bid Process

I would not be thrilled with that, no :p

I mean, in terms of atmosphere, there is absolutely not going to be any better place in the world for speed skating - from national championships to Olympics - than Thialf. Hamar once rivalled it, but not anymore. That being said: I'd be sad to have Olympics in one country, and one sport pretty far away in another country.

Last week a Dutch former speed skater (Olympic champion Mark Tuitert) was talking about it during the World Cup broadcast, and he said he'd have been sad to have that in his career: according to him, a majority of athletes of course wants to go to the Olympics, but with part of that being immersed in the entire Olympic feeling, from a nation's culture to so many athletes from different sports being in the same area, which normally just doesn't happen. Olympics in France or Switzerland or so, with speed skating in Thialf, would mean the speed skating is basically just another championship instead of something special like the Olympics.

Fair enough, was expecting this kind of answer from you :teacher:

First French championships in a lifetime are around the corner ... in Inzell of course. Can it change anything ?

Inzell was legendary until they put a roof on it :(

2005 world championships were some of the most amazing ever, super surprising gold medals for the likes of Even Wetten and Rune Stordal. Now it's just a regular track like almost all others, including the total lack of atmosphere :p

But, yeah. France confirmed as the sole interested party going into the next phase for 2030, same for Salt Lake for 2034. Switzerland's project was invited for talks with eyes on 2038.

Sweden is basically ignored, other than saying "thank you, your project would have been the most sustainable ever, but your people don't want it" :p

Feel bad for Sweden.  3 countries just got validated and Sweden left out in the proverbial (and literal) cold yet again.

Not hosting in Stockholm in 2030 feels like a real missed opportunity.

The French bid winning 2030 feels very weird. I'm sure they will be perfectly good games. Switzerland being targeted for 2038 this far out also feels a bit weird.

I really hate how little transparancy this process has.

France and USA having 2 Olympics in 6 years has a sour taste in my mouth. :dunno: Especially when there are other options available. Like why don't France host the 38 or 42 ones.

Also just pure coincidence that USA are being pushed for 2034, when we all know the NBC contract end with 2032.  IOC salivating on the negotiations for the new rights already.

Sounds like financial guarantees were an issue.  And yes, not a fan of how 1 day the IOC just decides that they have a location in mind for the 2038 games.

    • Also it being illegal in France means the IOC will have to test everyone pre arriving at 2030 and can’t wait till they arrive at the Games to do so. I’m sure at 2028 for some sports testing will happen on site if it’s not a rule of its governing body for non Olympic events. So far only a few sports like Athletics and Boxing have that rule - I suspect others will adopt it but others might take time.
    • https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/articles/cpwj78lxypro ‘In France - one of a number of countries where genetic testing is illegal without a medical prescription due to privacy laws - the government has condemned the decision as "a step backwards". "It defines the female sex without taking into account the biological specificities of intersex individuals, whose sexual characteristics present natural variations, leading to a reductive and potentially stigmatising approach," claimed French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari.”   ‘A group of legal experts in human rights and sports have since expressed, external"urgent concern" about what they called "the regressive move toward genetic testing as a precondition of participation in women's sport" which they say "violate domestic and international laws that protect human rights and regulate the use of genetic testing and genetic information".  The group has called on athletes "to challenge the national or regional implementation of mandatory genetic sex testing, demanded by the IOC or international federations, before domestic courts, by invoking national or regional laws protecting human rights, prohibiting anti-discrimination, and regulating the use of genetic testing and genetic data".’   Domestic laws are more challenging for the IOC to deal with than CAS. Things could get complicated for a bit.
    • Except NOC’s and governing bodies have to still follow local laws. Particularly for Under 18’s there could certainly be domestic legal issues regarding associations paying for travel to other counties to circumvent a domestic ban. Child protection services don’t always act reasonable to attempts to break a domestic law.
